It is based on the number of special ants you have, their levels and their stars. If you recently removed stars from some, or decomposed some to get shells, or made some adjustments like that, it could result in a drop. Also, there is some luck involved if you chose the quick raid, as it collects buffs randomly. If you want a higher score, consider levelling up all your orange ants to level 50, and getting all skills to level 10. This is what I did to push my levels and I believe it worked. Star ups are costly and exotic shells are rare, so I reserved star ups only for useful ants.
Unfortunately the reversion feature doesn’t give you tower snail. It only gives you back the specific ant’s awakening items (which you currently can’t switch to another ant) and the awakening proteins. In other words, the only reason you’ll want to use reversion is if you need awakening protein for another ant.
Based on what Mateus said in reply to another comment, it should be unlocked after your server reaches 90 days. Note that I don’t know personally as for us it was unlocked as soon as the feature was released. We are Server 574.

The books can’t be transferred, but you can get the protein back to use on another ant

I see you cant use reversion to add to tower snail. Or am I missing something?

The maximum is level 40 right now. However, I would not recommend going over level 30 due to the awakening gallery buffs.
