    Lastly, there also may be a single candle in the middle of the altar table. This is lit with the holy light, in some places this is from the miracle of the Holy Fire at the Holy Sepulchre. This light is never snuffed out and is supposed to be kept going constantly. There may also be a blessing cross on the Priest's right hand side on the altar table.

  • @OrthoArchitectDU
    @OrthoArchitectDU 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In the video, the altar table is really minimalistic.
    The altar table should be a cube and pretty close to 1 cubit wide, long and high. Probably in Hagia Sophia it would have been made of stone because of it's prominence. It would also be "clothed" in a white garment (unseen), and with a larger, more elaborate cloth on top, sometimes this can be changed out based on the feast or fast. The relics in Byzantine altar tables are actually sealed inside of the altar.

    You see the plain altar/holy table within the templon and curtains. No iconostasis, correct. This came after 1200 AD and was not fully developed until the 16th century. Western churches were also like this with a variant of the altar screen and rood which separated the nave from the sanctuary. Good job this!

    Some altars do have two candles on each side, this is usually in addition to the 7 branch candlestand. Behind the altar should be a cross, either a crucifix icon or a gold cross. Some churches also keep the liturgical fans alongside this cross. Again, also depending on the local tradition, processional candles may be beside these behind the altar.

    Also, the relics within the antimension are separate from the altar itself. The antimension can serve as an altar where a consecrated altar isn't available.
    The antimension isn't unfolded on the table unless a Liturgy is being conducted. Otherwise it is kept folded in the center of the table with the gospel book laid on top of it.
    The altar also should have a artophorion (tabernacle) to hold the eucharist, a 7 branch candlestand (actually where the cross is sitting in the image). (continue)

  • @Danyus82
    @Danyus82 12 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    You have to take in consideration: a) This is just an schematic reconstruction. b) Hagia Sophia was a church from VI to XV centuries and the Byzantine usage varied across the centuries. The primitive usage in Holy tables was: nothing was put on them when the liturgy was not celebrated (that was also the case in western altars). But does this schematic altar represent that primitve usage of the VI century or XV century? I think is just that: schematic using a software.

  • @Pilgrim06

    We have an account from the great Byzantine Historian, Steve Runciman, that Sultan Fatih climbed on the altar to do his Islamic prostrations. Which means that the altar was large enough to accommodate a person on it. I also have my doubts about the altar being a table with legs. One simply has to refer to other Byzantine churches from Mount Sinai, to the Holy Land, to Cyprus, and across Greece, to ascertain its form.

  • @OrthoArchitectDU

    I had also assumed that this was a later depiction of Hagia Sophia since he has chosen to include icons on the templon, which wouldn't have been there just after its completion.

  • @OrthoArchitectDU
    @OrthoArchitectDU 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Beautiful! Wonderful job!
    Just one question though, I skimmed through the description by Paul the Silentary and didn't see a description of the altar table. From what I know of Orthodox liturgical usage, the altar must contain relics, and presumably would have been solid, not an actual table. The form shown in the clip seems to more closely resemble Western altar tables (of the Roman Rite, pre-Vatican II). What were your sources for the altar?

    Questo film, tratto da un parziale modello tridimensionale, ha scartato di proposito il pulpito e il suo corridoio che iniziava a protendersi dal centro dell'iconostasi. La scelta si deve a motivi di ordine prettamente tecnico. In un altro filmato, tuttavia, è possibile notare la presenza anche di questo secondo elemento.

  • @Danyus82
    @Danyus82 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Probably in the VI century the altar was almost bare, but as we approach the XV century most of the element you mention were added.
    Lastly: first you state is like a western pre-vatican II roman rite altar table (they were quite elaborated) but now you state is "minimalistic" isn't that a bit contradictory?

  • @lamprotes1
    @lamprotes1  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @youcip Nel Medioevo e nel periodo bizantino era del tutto inconcepibile la nostra mentalità attuale di "essere visibile ai fedeli". Questa mentalità ha una origine chiaramente umanistica. Il Medioevo era, invece, essenzialmente teocentrico: è necessario essere visibili a Dio, quindi essere preparati davanti a Lui. Questo principio regolava tutto. Perciò, a volte, le arti più belle erano nascoste allo sguardo dei fedeli: ciò che contava era solo Dio!

    2 - Le tende sono un elemento costitutivo dell'iconostasi, sia in Oriente, sia in Occidente. Lo sguardo, a differenza di quanto crediamo noi (ma questa credenza si fonda solo dal Rinascimento in poi) doveva essere fermato da questi elementi e NON PENETRARE nel santuario, luogo deputato alla celebrazione di misteri ineffabili.

      It didn't exist at that time. Before the iconostasis the orthodox churches used what is called a templon, which were pillars and curtains like in the old testament to divide the sanctuary from the rest.

    • @sedenedgu2982
      @sedenedgu2982 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The iconostasis wall which is not in this reconstruction existed during 1204 invasion. It was a golden wall that was taken down in pieces. The crusaders made street women dance in the sanctuary to humiliate the orthodox church before they converted it to a catholic one.

    I don't necessarily think it is contradictory. I must admit an amount of unfamiliarity with pre-vatican II altars. Maybe I should have said post-Vatican II since it is the Novus Ordo altars which are minimalistic.
    Could you give me a source for the simplicity of early altars? (being an architect-in-training, I'm honestly interested)

    La presenza di queto stato di cose la desumiamo indirettamente anche dalla Mistagogia di san Massimo il Confessore. In Occidente, l'uso di tende appese alle iconostasi è chiaramente indicato da Innocenzo III in una sua opera liturgica rimasta celebre. L'Occidente, in questo, non faceva che seguire gli usi anche orientali dai quali già aveva molto attinto.

    I don't see how this resembles a pre-vatican II roman rite altar (if you mean the big and long altar attached to the wall of the Gothic and Baroque churches, and not the smaller mediaeval romanesque ones) Actually is quite similar to the Holy tables I've seen in Byzantine rite churches. The relics in a Byzantine rite holy table are sewn into the antimension. You can see an antimension on this altar.
