      You probably covered this... but why can't you set up your solar panels and battery room in garage? You have that entire roof, which is larger than the house. Is it cost prohibitive or just not able to be done? I'm clueless regarding all of this but it seems like once it was completed it would work well, plus you could place tether points on the roof, for a safety harness, and not take away from the aesthetics of the house or barn since it's on the back.

    • @brians8664
      @brians8664 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don’t forget to run another 1.5” electrical conduit from the back of the shop to the house when you move the propane around. It’ll allow you to add more solar on the shop roof if you decide to.

    • @jamescasey6785
      @jamescasey6785 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heath, why don’t you seriously consider putting new/additional solar panels on the SHOP ROOF?
      That would be an excellent viable solution to new solar addition for your homestead.
      [Re: I reference you to “Ambition Strikes” homestead in northern Idaho. It is built with great thought and foresight, including future expansion of the physical homestead. Simply put, it is an awesome setup and installation.
      Just an FYI for you.
      All the best to you, Cedar and the family.

      I really thought you were going to move the panels to the Barn after you built it... the voltage should work from there

  • @Upliftyourbrothers
    @Upliftyourbrothers 2 ปีที่แล้ว +61

    I believe you can ‘AC couple’ with the Lion energy inverter. If that’s the case put more solar on the barn. Easy big roof. Ask Lion about ac coupling a second system.

    • @brians8664
      @brians8664 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Shop is unheated or at least not heated regularly. LIFEPO4 batteries can’t charge below 32F. One option would be to put the panels on the shop and run a conduit while the propane gets moved around. IIRC the inverter can handle 450VDC on the MPPT input. The high voltage from running the panels in series would allow for smaller (compared to 240VAC anyways) conductors from the shop to the inverter in the house.

    • @Upliftyourbrothers
      @Upliftyourbrothers 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@brians8664 doesn’t matter when you ac couple, you literally dump the solar into the 240v side of ac. The inverter frequency shifts to turn on and off the barn solar. Would work with no extra wiring.

      Not only that, but that area on first storey roof will become old quickly and not because of snow, the fact that it will seriously block light getting in that window will be a bigger headache long term.

    I would suggest making a set of stairs on the back corner of the house to access the roof. For the number of times you may need to access the roof to remove snow, it will make things easier if you don't have to drag out ladders. It will also be safer than climbing ladders and easier to get tools up there.

    Another interesting and informative video from RPR. Given your silver reflective roof, you might consider upgrading to bifacial panels. They cost more but have a transparent back which allows light to pass through and then reflect back to the cells on the back of the panel. They are about 10-15% more efficient per panel.

But before I did all of that, I would have moved them down to the front of the yard by the fence to get more daylight. Put some arborvitaes around them to hide them from the side and back. Couldn’t have looked any worse than them sticking up over the back of the house. That’s a lot of work for something you admitted is probably temporary. And yes, it kills he whole point of you redoing the pitch of that lower roof. You will definitely be back up there shelving snow on ice.

      like someone else said. living in Texas...where they are..it's hot. It does not get anywhere near as cold, or as long in Texas as it does up at RPR. Hell most years we get a few weeks of what most people consider autumn and maybe a week or so of 'winter'. the last2 yrs years have been stupid for us as far as amount of cold and HOW cold... but still.
      as a Union General once said "If I owned Texas and Hell, I'd lease out Texas and live in hell" Although all things being equal the temps are probably the same. when we're talking summer time.

I know you have a big stash of canned dried food, but if you want some good greens during the winter you can dry spinach, kale, spring mix, carrot tops and etc and make a powder. Add it to your meals, drinks and you have that goodness from your garden. You can do your own caramelized onions powder. So much fun too something the kids can watch it change in the dehydrator. Watermelon is a fun one for the kids and such a healthy treat.

    The solar panels where an eye sore on the hill, now they will completely block the view and light from the second floor for part of the year. Seems like quite a big compromise and, from my perspective, a trade-off in the wrong direction. I guess there are no alternatives. If I where a betting man I would put my money on the panels being relocated (again) next summer. Thanks for continuing to put up the great videos. They are a staple in my TH-cam diet. 👍🏽

    You were talking about power issues during the winter time you might consider putting in a small shed up on the top of the hill and putting up an array of 300 watt panels turn it to AC to bring it down the hill and connect it into your system like it would be a grid tie system.. We are on the grid and have invested in solar to reduce our total energy bill. 93 panels 360W each. Total system capacity is 24 kWp and we have 2 Inverters that take the 700V form our 6 strings and convert it to 400V AC 3 phase that we use here in Sweden. In total it should produce around 27000 kWh/year of power and reduce our bill quite a bit. Our total need is about 43000 kWh/year.
    It was not cheap but if it works as intended we will save a lot on the energy bill. We have a big house and indoor swimming pool so it's a lot of power needed. Our heating and warm water is produced with a thermal heat pump that take the energy from the ground and convert it to hot water for our needs but if I had designed the system my self we would have had a wood fired boiler with accumulator tanks for the heating. We live far north on the globe (59.7 degrees north) so we have very short winter days but instead long summer days. Not perfect for solar to heat your house. Keep up the good videos and take care of your beautiful family.. Best regards and love from Sweden / Micke.
