    Having experimented with many Macro diffusers from the pringle cans to triangular facing forward diffusers that angle at 45 deg to get the light out over the front of the lens I have designed a few that I have put up on a site called, Homemade Flash Diffusers for Macro Photography. The plans can be printed full size on A4 paper, then you can purchase the materials and make your own, I use 0.8mm for the exterior and 0.34mm for the front face. The material is Polypropylene. My reasoning is that many people cant afford the $100 to $160 dollars to purchase one of those great units. Cheers for another great Video

      Thanks for sharing. I'm not so crafty so just went with the cheap diffuser. But the homemade ones are definitely worth a try and much more rewarding.

    I wrapped a clear cylinder with diffusion material and surrounded it with 6 diffused LEDs. I then boxed it all in.
    I call it the Zen Extreme-Macro Cauldron

    Useful video clip Rob 👌. Just ordered a Cynustech diffuser from Brendon to go with my new Godox V860lll. Looking forward to more flash lighting clips 😊😊

    Great timing Rob. I just got the Olympus STF-8 twin flash. It has a slow recycle time which not so good for handheld stacking but have found it to be good for single shot. Thank you for your videos you are a great teacher.

    I use an Olympus E-M5.3 along with the 30mm f3.5 macro lens for flower photography. I've been having good luck using the small softbox style diffuser similar to what Robin Wong uses. I've had good results using it off camera with a Canon ttl flash cord. It has the advantages of being able to freely locate the flash for best effect. It can be a bit unwieldy though having to juggle both the camera and the flash.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally forgot to mention being able to use that diffuser off-camera. It is definitely a key advantage. Thanks!

    Off camera flash using a flash trigger is another option. Markuspix did a great review of flash triggers yesterday, though Markus uses these for glamour photography. Andrew Lanxon uses off camera flash for his macro work.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I love Markuspix! I prefer off camera flash in general. That''s why I like the diffusers that attach to the flash rather than the typical macro diffusers that fit around the camera.

    Nicely covered. You will just have to skip the 60mm and get the 90mm Olympus/OM-SYSTEM macro lens.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. The 90mm would be awesome! It's probably lighter and shorter than the setup I show here.

    Thanks for introducing the 30mm round diffuser which I haven't seen before. Do you think it is a good alternative to the AK and Cygnustech diffusers in macro photography?

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It works well but is not in the same class as the AK or Cygnustech. However, the key advantage to the round or rectangular softbox is that it can be used off camera.

    I've seen some use a flash bender xl for macro to throw over the object. Would you recommend this one?

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything is better than no modifier. If you bend the top and sides in, you should get good results.

    Thank you for the interesting and comprehensive video. I have the old Olympus FL 36R flash (actually two of them). With the focus stacking function on the E-M1 MkIII, it looks like I can only use the flash in manual mode (setting the power as 1/1, 1/2, etc.) Is this also the case with newer flashes? Thanks

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. The only Olympus branded flash I have is the F-LM3. It also must be used in manual for focus stacking. I suspect newer flashes from Olympus/OM Systems would be the same but I can't confirm this. My Godox flashes must be used in manual, except that I have to set the power directly on the flash unit and not in-camera.

  • @berntlie6799
    @berntlie6799 ปีที่แล้ว

    Slightly off-topic: some macro lenses have a programmable function button. Suppose I set it up with toggling focus stacking.
    * What happens if I switch to another lens with function button? Will the function button on this other lens also toggle focus stacking? Or will the functionality of a lens function button be tied to each individual lens?

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just tried this on the only two lenses I have with a Fn button - 12-40mm Pro and 300mm Pro. The Fn Button on the lens will use whatever you set in the button menu in-camera. So when I set the Fn button for Focus BKT on my 12-40mm Pro, it will do the same on the 300mm Pro. If I change the Fn button again with the 300mm Pro, swapping back to the 12-40mm Pro will use the new in-camera setting.

    • @berntlie6799
      @berntlie6799 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobTrek I suspected this. I think it would be better if it was possible to link the functionality of the Fn button to the lens... so if I defined the Fn button to be Focus Stacking on a macro lens, it could be (say) Pro Capture on a bird lens.
      But this may possibly be difficult to achieve. [On the other hand, it might be difficult to keep track of what the Fn button did if one had many lenses... :-o ]

    Rob do you have a full breakdown for the best vlogging settings for em1 mark iii? I JUST got the camera with the m.zuiko 12mm f2 and there's just soo many settings! I'm coming up from an action cam so yeee... Send help!

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want the "cinematic" exposure settings, it's pretty straight forward. Set your video to c4k 24p. Set your shutter speed to 1/48th. Set Movie Mode Auto-ISO. Set your aperture to f/2. Check the exposure reading. It will read between +/- 3 EV. You want it to read 0. If it reads >0, then you need to raise your aperture and/or use and ND Filter. If it reads

    • @blankhub
      @blankhub ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobTrek thank you rob, a video would be nice and i'm sure i'm not the only one looking for settings for this. I got the cinematic settings down but now i'm confused specifically about the digital and nondigital stabe. Is the digital off enough for vlogging? Walking and talking. I'm on the 12mm f2 so it's decently wide but with the digital it crops in quite a bit. Also any selfie stick recommendations? It's a heavy beast and I still wanna get that extension so i can have the good field of view. Getting an extra long one would let me use the digital but then i'll look like a circus balancing act in public 😅 just trying to get a head down to chest shot.
      What do you recommend for the walk n talks? Digi on/off? How long of a selfie stick in cm? Any recommendations for actual selfie stick that can hold the 824g (body+lens+shotgun mic)?

    • @blankhub
      @blankhub ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobTrek note, i'm currently hand holding it in the palm with the pointer, middle and ring finger pressed on the back for support and my thumb and pinky on the front beside the lens. Digi stabe off. I get a shot that has an ok amount of head room and ends on my upper chest. If i go Digi on, it seems too tight for me. It becomes a giant head vlog but the stabe is glidy. I currently don't have a selfie stick that can support the weight.
      Hmm... maybe i should just opt to get a wider lens? I've been watching stuff though and see a lot of people with flapping sides in their vlogs. I guess the image warps because of the distortion on the 7.5-8-9-10mm lens? Even corrected in post i can see the flap flap flaps 😅 and also a lot of the wider lenses are manual only focus and i get kinda wild in the vlogs.
      So yeah, send help. 🙏

      @RobTrek  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blankhub Okay. I'll look into it. I don't have my E-M1.3 anymore, so I'll have to test on my OM-1. I do have wide lenses, 8mm fisheye Pro and Panasonic 7-14mm f/4. I'll see what IBIS settings do. It should be similar to the EM1.3, but that's the best I can do.
