    I first heard this song when I was 10 years old and my Dad was driving me to school. Now at 64, it still hits me and takes me back to that trip to school. My Dad has since passed, but this song helps ease the pain of his passing. Thanks Dad!!

      Papa Alben must have been one helluva man. You'll sing Everything's talkin' with your dad, Harry Nilsson and Fred Neil in a heavenly chorus when it's your time to transition from here to there...but no hurry...we have "time" here, we have forever there. Blessings, Phillip, I hope my voice turns from croaking now to heavenly after I croak (humor intended)

    I was walking in Cardiff in Wales this morning and as I left a shopping centre I heard this song. A young man was busking and I had to stop to thank him for his beautiful singing.As this happened a young woman applauded a few yards away.

    This song was actually written and recorded by songwriter Fred Neil in 1966. In achieved great popularity in 1969 when Nilsson recorded it for "Midnight Cowboy." Nilsson's own song, "I Guess the Lord Must Live in New York City," was rejected for the movie theme, but became a hit in its own right. Both are highly original compositions, and made Nilsson, after years of struggling, an "over-night" star.

    • @DamGreek
      @DamGreek 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I believe the version on the Soundtrack album has a slightly different mix than this version as well. Nilsson had released it as a single prior to its inclusion in "Midnight Cowboy" and when Derek Taylor recommended Nilsson for the Midnight Cowboy soundtrack to director John Schlesinger, Schlesinger selected "Everybody's Talkin'" preferring the cover to the song Nilsson had written and proposed , "I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City" which actually fits the film better. Either way, when first released as a single it only got to 113 on the US Pop charts, but after being included in the film it went to the Top ten landing at No 6 on the Pop Charts, and No 2 on the Easy Listening Charts, and also won a grammy for "Song of the year" in 1969. Interesting that Nilsson (who is known as a songwriter of excellence) is one of the few artists to win grammys for "Song of the Year" twice, with songs he hadn't written (The 2nd was "Without You" which won the grammy for "Song of the Year" in 1971, which was written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of the group BADFINGER. Nilsson had heard that song at a party and walked around for a week asking people, "What album is that new Beatles song on??" Someone finally told him it was Badfinger.)

    • @DamGreek
      @DamGreek 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@janeyd5280 Some info for "Without You" from wikipedia: Released in the USA, in early December 1971. "Without You" debuted (at 99) on Billboard's Hot 100 in the chart dated December 18, 1971, and on its tenth week, in the chart dated February 19, 1972, started its four-week run at number one. Billboard ranked it as the number four single of 1972.[12] The record topped Billboard's Easy Listening chart for five weeks.
      The record spent five weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart, beginning on 11 March, eventually selling almost 800,000 copies.[13] It went to number one in several other countries, including Australia (for five weeks), Ireland (two weeks) and New Zealand (two weeks).
      I think you're right, that the song did in fact make him a millionaire. Nilsson didn't tour, so his income depended on his songwriting and his record sales. There were some "minor" hits, when others recorded his songs....but other than "Everybody's Talkin'"...Nilsson had not had the chart success that made him wealthy until the album which contained "WIthout You" called "Schimillson". (Other hits from the album were, "Coconut" and "Jump Into The Fire"). The albums prior to 1971 did sell well, and got a boost when the Beatles acknowledged that they were Nilsson fans, but he really took off after his "Schmillson" album, but that was also short lived, as he did "Son of Nilsson" and then the album of standards called "A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night", which he recorded with Gordon Jenkins, who was a well know arranger from the late 1950s and 1960s. The album of standards also criticallly regarded as "exceptional" killed Harry's career as a chart record artist. He''d have other minor hits, and also record "Pussycats" with John Lennon, but he never returned to the Top 40 again...but I'm not 100% sure on that, so don't quote me.

      @@janeyd5280 You're welcome. Yes..the album you probably have with the Orchestra is probably "A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night"..which is the album of old standards Nilsson recorded with Gordon Jenkins in 1972-73 I believe. Either that or it's the album he did in 1977 called "Knnillssonn" which was mostly strings....check out songs like "Perfect Day" and "All I Ever Think About is You". One thing to note....in the early 1980s I believe...they found the old tapes from "A Little Touch of Schmillson in the Night" and issued several of the outtakes. (You can read about it here: www.harrynilsson.com/music/a-little-touch-of-schmilsson-in-the-night/) Then a few years later, they issue a CD with the whole of the original album, and included all of the outtakes together, calling it "As Time Goes By" (You can see the cover in this same link above). "As Time Goes By" is still around, but somewhat more difficult to find these days. But it's well worth the investment. Hope this helps. By the way, I'm in California. Nice to meet you. DmGrk

      I know what you mean when you're trying to find a song and finally get to hear it again. Imagine how bad it must have been before the internet, and you couldn't Google some lyrics you caught, and no Shazzam either to call, and get a text back saying what track it is.

    This song is mostly appreciated by those that can identify with the lyrics. Indifference towards those that don’t understand you and acceptance of the fact that change is always welcome when loneliness and incomprehension from others makes you a target for hate.

      I don't think that can be true, as Captain Beefheart and his trout mask replica album is a different league of avant garde. Harry Partch too, and even some Tom Waits is more avant garde. I'd say Harry Nilsson's music is relatively mainstream or even pop music in comparison. I do like it though or I wouldn't be here.

    My friend Carl and I have been working on this song for a few months. We are going to give it a go tonight at the Friday night open mic at the Green Lady in Olympia, WA (east side). It's challenging, especially working a harmony line where the original recording is just one voice. Harry's was one of the best voices to come out of this era. He had depth, power, and control. His falsetto was awe inspiring.

    I've always been an introvert, only dealing with people out of necessity like at work or school. Being recognized as the "quiet person" automatically makes most people label you as weird, creepy and a number of other derisive terms. Even though I'm an introvert, being labeled can make me feel like an outcast - something that gets me down more than the name calling. This song has gotten me through a lot of those times I felt completely alienated by my peers. Because I am different, I've learned to accept and embrace it.
    Honestly, not to sound pretentious, but every time I tried to adapt and "fit in" with the majority of others, I felt like I was lowering myself, or at the very least changing my personality to an uncomfortable level.
    "I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not."

      Hugh- it's my distinct pleasure as a life long (and professional) extrovert to report that you haven't missed much. I.E most people are just plain ol' shit-eaters. So, going forward, if one of those shit-eaters calls you a name or behaves derisively just smile and remember he/she is probably a shit-eater. For myself, I'd prefer nothing more than just being left alone to live my life. I guess, maybe, that qualifies me as an introvert too, huh?

      You know sir, that is exactly what this song brings to me. Just the year 1970, I didn't see the movie, it was taboo. Just music on the AM radio. I was twelve, but it, when I look back, was the best year of my life. Things were soooo much simpler. All I had to do was paper route, and I had money to spend or save. I miss all my family who have passed. This song brings back to me them. My grandma lovingly called me her "wandering Jew", as in Moses in the Bible....which funny, came true.

    Added this song to my solo acoustic show a couple months ago. Thought I was probably taking a real longshot - people either aren't going to know this song, or they just won't care. But figured I tried it once since I spent a lot of time leaning the fingerstyle picking. So I finish the song, in front of a bar room of about 40 people, and much to my surprise I get a rousing applause from the whole room. Even a standing ovation from a few! Just goes to show what a masterful classic this beautiful song is. 50 years later, and it still means that much to people. I think because it really speaks to a feeling, a time. and a place that so many of us have encountered during our lifetimes.
