Funeral service for US airman from Atlanta shot and killed by Florida deputy

- A funeral is planned to take place on Friday after an Atlanta airman was shot to death a Florida deputy earlier in May. The funeral is expected to take place at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta starting at 11 a.m.
This comes just a day after Civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump and the family revealed new details relating to the incident that left US Airman Roger Fortson dead.
Some of those details include Crump highlighting discrepancies in the sheriff's office narrative about the disturbance at Fortson's apartment, along with Body-camera audio showing the woman who called the deputy unsure where the disturbance was coming from. More: www.11alive.com/article/news/...

As a fellow veteran, I am deeply saddened and troubled to hear about the senseless killing of Senior Airman Roger Fortson by police in Florida. Airman Fortson bravely served our country, only to lose his life needlessly to police violence here at home. It fills me with grief to see yet another Black servicemember, who dedicated his life to our nation, die in this way.
Incidents like this are a sobering reminder that even those who wear the uniform are not immune to the systemic racism and injustice that continues to plague policing in America. It shows how far we still have to go to root out bias and brutality in law enforcement, and to ensure that every person, regardless of the color of their skin, can expect fair treatment and due process.
My heart goes out to Airman Fortson's family, friends and fellow Airmen as they cope with this devastating loss. I stand with them in mourning and in the continued call for meaningful reform, increased accountability, and justice. Senior Airman Fortson's service and sacrifice will not be forgotten. We must honor his memory by working to build a society where tragedies like this no longer occur, and where every person's life, dignity and humanity is equally valued and protected.
I don't know why this had occurred and happened to this young man I see also witnessed it globally in this Country are corrupt and I'm very terrified cause raising your children and being murdered in the hands of systems that's continuing

This amazing young man shouldn’t be lying in that casket. My daughter wants to enlist in the US Army or National Guard. I tell her all the time that I don’t want her to risk her life for a country that will have a police officer to possibly unalive one of her brothers. Not only that, but why serve a country that doesn’t have equal rights for her race? This is a sad country that slowing becoming ghetto.

He shot Roger six times for a supposed disturbance. Please make that sink in. I have seen white men get confronted by cops whilst armed and they deescalate. You can’t come to somebody’s door listen hear nothing no disturbance, knock , delay identification of yourself as a cop and then step to the side so the person can’t see then shoot them six times. They did not say it was a school shooting or a burglary or a rape or murder or any other assault. You responded for an apartment disturbance. How did you come prepared to shoot somebody? You see his gun you tell him to drop it. Then have the nerve to tell a kid shot six times stop moving … bunch of dummies . I went to a country where the cops don’t even have guns. They patrol on foot with a baton. They can do that because their society is not toxic. Cops should be restricted from using their weapon for certain responses. He saw a black kid open a door and shot him point blank period .
That country's cops don't have guns because the citizens of that country do not have the right to bear arms. If it is Japan, I can tell you plenty of toxic issues exist. Also, the lack of guns of the police has cost lives many times.
I am in Florida really contemplating enrolling as an Airman officer and this happens. This country keeps reminding me that its laws and rights do not apply to me. Florida is the home of Castle Doctrine, Stand Your Ground Laws, but that only is honored for citizens and servicemen of a particular color. Rest in Peace Airman Roger Fortson. Beautiful black man.

The funeral was moving, and it was touching to see the US Air Force stand by him and offer their support. The priest delivered a powerful sermon.
