Superb excerpt from the film. Those epic films of those days had an "INTERMISSION" where you'd get up from the theater seat and go to the restroom and get more popcorn and snacks. I'd forgotten how long it lasted...about 20 minutes.
I had the privilege to see a revival of Ben Hur and Spartacus on the big screen as a double feature. If I ever win the lottery, I'm opening my own movie theater where I can play the classics like this on the big screen, where they were meant to be seen. And Charlton Heston, well, that man is a legend.
I have said it before and I'll say it again, "If you love the movie, read the book!" It's a 19th century publication by Lew Wallace and it's free from many places on the Internet. It was a most popular book back then and it still influenced our society in subtle ways. It's well worth your time.
My dad showed me this movie when I was five. This scene had such a strong influence on my life and my interest in history, it's hard to put it into words the impact that it had.
My Grandmother took me to see this Epic as a child. I was blown away . Great everything, casting, crew, cino, action, dialogue, script. This movie made me want to go to Hollywood and work on movies. Reality, I worked on ships, as an electrician for 25 years. It's all good.
All time classic movie, there are very few movies that have come out in the last 30 years that can even be compared to it. They are few and far between and it’s usually just the great ones that can stand side-by-side in the pantheon of greatest movies of all time alongside this masterpiece.
Bought tickets when they announced it was opening in London and told my dad he was taking me as I was only 10. Have seen it so many times since. The remake was a disaster. This 1959 version is wonderful.
An EMPIRE THAT DID NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT ANY NATION, BUT HAD TO TO WORRY ABOUT EVERY NATION. SOUNDS LIKE A NATION IN BETWEEN TO OCEANS THAT IS ON THE DECLINE !
Though the Romans called them pirates I doubt these were really pirates. Pirates don’t sail in fleets and certainly do not engage in naval warfare. There is simply no profit to be made in battles. A pirate’s forte would be in seizing merchant ships or three or four pirate ships raiding a coastal port or town. But to put to sea in a fleet and hunt down a Roman Fleet and purposely turn towards them and engage? That is the hallmark of a military power. These are either Macedonian or Egyptian Ships. Or perhaps a fleet from a Hellenistic Kingdom like the Seleucid Empire or a Maritime Power like Rhodes.
You are completely wrong. Pirates in those days sailed in huge fleets and lived of blocking ports and taking tribute from coastal cities. They were so strong, that it took creating several navies to wipe them out. They also raided certain coastal areas. Pirates were a serious force and comprised not only runaway slaves, but also military deserters, they were well organised. Romans had to undertake very serious effort to suppress piracy in Mediterranean
A little bit of history.....slaves are not used on military ships. Stop and think about it. Now on cargo ships yes, but on a warship, in battle. Do you really want something so unreliable. It was so uncommon on a warship unless in training and close to friendly ports.
historically so much wrong but I have always ignored that. Biggest problem here is Romans didn’t use slaves to row their ships and pirates didn’t operate in fleets.
If this film var edited down to max. 2 hrs and got rid of most of the religious crap, it would still be a fantastic movie. I saw it as a small kid, and it totally fascinated me. I saw it again 20 years later, and for young people it was already outdated.
imagine being the commander of a naval fleet, gets caught fighting 1 v 1 with enemy ships, loses the ship and thinks the battle is lost yet you become rescued by a friendly ship and told it was a magnificent victory
Well at least governor wallace did one thing right when he wrote this book , but what about pardoning billy the kid , i wonder if anyone remembers wallace as fondly as they do billy bonney.

Anybody that's never seen Ben-Hur, I strongly recommend it. This movie is legendary.
One of the best movies EVER made, and the special effects hold up to this day. Spectacular!!!
I first saw this movie as a kid in the late 70s. I've been watching it over and over, ever since then. Never gets old. Amazing movie.
Yes,!! seen it a dozen times myself
Me three. Saw it in the late 70s also. The sea fight was my favorite part.

It was something on the giant screens they had before theaters went multi screen.

I remember the intermissions.
Has never aged. Just gets better. Not a CGI anywhere!!!
Charlton Heston.. what an actor ❤
Also Jack Hawkins - a Brit cinematic great.
Judah: Nice 👍 To Meet You.
Yes...in Waterloo 1970, as general Picton.
I always thought he was a bit of an over actor.
Charlton Chest_on

Mr. Heston had a natural and a strong presence. R.I.P✌️🩵👍
Still blows me away that this fantastic movie was made 66 years ago. Wow.

In the interractions between Charlton Heston and Jack Hawkins you should keep your eye on Hawkins. an absolute class actor.
Row well and Live 41. Great movie with great director and actors. The stuntman deserve awards as well.
This old movies are amazing, no sexual perversion, no bad language.
Well, to be true, I'll bet there was quite a bit of bad language and perversion on those ships.
@Historically sure, but I meant to the movie itself.

There is one. Barry Lyndon
The Romans had a huge experience of naval battles. They were unmatched.
I saw this movie when it came out in 1959. Wonderful experience.
Amazing actors they don't make them like them anymore.
Who makes them?
This is filmmaking at its peak.
Film music as its peak, too.
Yeap the best. I remember well at a matinee Sunday morning at the theater 🎭
Judah Ben HUR: Amen 🙏
Absolutely agree. Magnificent movie.
So enjoyable to see another clip of this absolute classic, thank you.
You’re welcome ☺️

This epic classic and David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" are timeless stories that can never be remade. The ultimates of cinematic art!
One of the best movies of all time.
Raming speed! A classic movie 👍
"I wish for you the courage to be unpopular.
Popularity is history's pocket change. Courage is history's true currency." - Charlton Heston.
Never read that before. Movie line or actual quote?
@@RoundingThirdBase-mz2mf an actual quote.
Will never see sets like this built ever again.
Heston was a physical god back than!
One of the my favourite movies ❤❤❤❤👏👏👏
Who is your driver? Well, the prince of Hur... Judah Ben Hur... Bests movie ever!
1 of the top 5 movies of all time in my book
It's an amazing film with an epic soundtrack ❤
Fantastic, I have never watched it fully through. Perhaps this year.
Nice use of miniatures. Those galleys looked realistic.
One of the best movies of all times. Charriot scene anb naval battle are amazing.
Una joya del cine clásico 🎞️🎥
Great production. Great script. Great performances. Great Direction. Never will we see the likes again. Modern cinema is crap.
Back in a time when movies were more about the story than about the visual effects.
Excellent movie 🎬 🤓🙋♂️❤️👍

This is a fantastic film, another fantastic film are Barry Lyndon by Stanley Kubrick. Two of my favorites.
Not many can touch that 😎
Same for Kubrick's Spartacus and Paths Of Glory
We watched this movie every year on Good Friday.
This is a seriously badass film. Love it!

They were Illyrians.

My favourite movie ever and a story that should be told! I have the 50 year DVD and it’s precious in my movie collection along with Spartacus!
Very good movie one of my favorites a classic l never get tire of watched rip the great charlton heston and another great actor Jack hawkins
One of the best movies ever. Period.
Chalton Heston was a an outstanding actor
So much to admire and nerd out over. I'd love to have one of those model ships. Hope they didn't trash them.
What a Wonderful, Great Movie! Jusr Awesome!!❤❤
Excellent Restore !
This was unbelievably well done for it's time.
Rhos movie and The Ten Commandments are legendary. Yes. Moviemaker at its peak.
"Joey...do you like movies about gladiators?" Yes, I do!
Didn't a pilot ask that question? Perhaps that should read a "Pilate".
Entertainment at its very best in mine eyes the greatest movie of all time

I don't think It would be that unreliable if the life of the slaves depends on the survival of the ship.
Remember seeing this when it first came out.
Really good ship models

Charlton should have gotten a body double for the foot scene, lol.
Are those Sicas the Pirates are using?.

A great command when doing canoe battles on the lake as a kid. Them was the days.

😉👍👍👍
Alright WB, where's the 4K releases of Ben Hur and Gone With the Wind?
Ben Hur was way better than 4k on the big wide screen of the day. For tv 4k is plenty.
Charlton Heston opposite the late great Jack Hawkins. Wow.
Yeah because landlocked Macedon had a fleet of pirates. (great movie)
Alexander the Great was from Macedonia (there are two Macedonias)
@@celtspeaksgoth7251 as far as I can tell they are both land locked
Quite fun to see a great actor like Jack Hawkins atruggling in scenes when faced with the total wooden acting of Heston.
Good observation.
..yet Heston won the Best Male Actor Oscar...
Macedonian Pirates???? Has there ever been such a thing?
Only if it means the region of origin or the area of their base. E.g. Spartans, Athenians, Thessalians pirates
I watched in 1961 when I was only 10years old
The title is wrong: Macedonian fleet attack the Roman Pirates
Wow.
The scene not bad, but old European "Dacii" is better. Much more impressive

why would macedonian pirates go up against a full roman fleet?did someone pay them in advance?
Judah Ben HUR: Amen 🙏
This won't look good back at the Admiralty.
Even greek fire is being used
BOOO! What kind of DVD quality rip is this? Where's the blu-ray!?
After three years a galley slave, shouldn't Heston be a little more ripped?
People were strong in those days, but nobody was ripped.
Well at least governor wallace did one thing right when he wrote this book , but what about pardoning billy the kid , i wonder if anyone remembers wallace as fondly as they do billy bonney.
Illyrian Pirates, not Macedonian.

Poor Charlton Heston. Too dumb to even see he was a closet case.

It did then. It was much larger in those days
The modern nation calling itself Macedon has no relation to the ancient one.
