Obviously at local's level you might have seen GP doing well, but the truth is that all the other decks where the ones topping on real tournaments.

I don't know how similar it is to Monster Strike but Puzzles and Dragons(PAD) is similar in art and has very basic looking characters as well when rolling as well the thing is very few of them actually look amazing when you first get them. You would instead have to evolve them and then you would start seeing some crazy arts.
