Andy - So nice to meet you in person and to show you around SF. Also, thanks for supporting other, smaller TH-cam channels. I appreciate it. Next time, bring Mrs. BikeFarmer and we'll give her the tour. See you soon.
Welcome to CA Andy! Grant Petersen is awesome. My brother bought two bikes from him over the years. I went with my brother to pick one of them up a number of years ago, bringing along an old titanium frame I acquired with no markings and couldn't identify it. Grant immediately determined it was made in Russia because of the forged titanium dropouts, which apparently no one else does. The man knows his stuff. Thanks, Grant!
Fun video as always. My wife and I visited RBW when we were in town for a wedding about 19 years ago. They sort of sneakily took my pubic bone measurement and put it in the computer. My beloved wife had plotted it all out because she was planning on a Riv for me for my 50th. My mother chipped in and I was on a dream bike for real about 9 months later. Grant and Rich were in on it and it was a swell day for sure. Looking forward to the rest of the Cali series.
Got to meet Grant , he took the time to talk with me outside while I got my Frameset. Cool to see the digs, the old shop was a retail shop with bikes, books and hatchets. My other favorite place near our daughter’s home in Navato ,is the Marin Museum of Bicycling and Mountain Bike Hall of Fame, just awesome!
I ride a Saluki i bought at Harris Cycles in Newton Mass in 2006. Sheldon Brown helped me pick it out. Grant came out after Sheldon passed and gave a nice talk. Great bikes, great people.
I disagree with Grant about big chunks of his whole philosophy, but there is no denying that he is cycling royalty and has definitely forgotten more about bikes than ill ever know. Very cool you got to meet him.
I pack the cassette & chain in my luggage & it keeps my Atlantis under 50lbs just barely. Visiting Rivendell is such a treat. Friendliest bike shop I've ever been in.
Thanks! This was a special video for me - I owned an Atlantis for many years and always meant to make the pilgrimage to Walnut Creek - never got around to it. So thanks for bringing me along!
Just finished Grant Petersens book, JUST RIDE for the dozenth time. Everything, (almost) that he says resonates with me, going back to my first bicycle. HAH! People are all too willing to give me crap about my step through bike. If Grant Petersen has one, it's ok by me! LOL You packed a lot into a few days.
If you lose audio in the future, don’t be afraid to make stills of the video you capture to use as B roll, and add narration over it in post to explain what we’re seeing.Scrolling subtitles are funny and informative, but while reading them, we’re not able to watch the video behind the superimposed scrolling text. And we’re not sure what to notice in the video. Good opportunity for stills and zooms. Just a tip from an old editor. Hope you’re having a great trip.
Interesting - Many years ago I lived in Walnut Creek. It was pre-Rivendell. I bought a bike when I lived there from a bike shop in Pleasant Hill. That bike shop is gone. This video brings back some memories. I wished I had biked up Mount Diablo when there. Good Video
I’m looking forward to seeing your tour of the Mtn Bike Museum with Aaron! He’s one of my favorite people I’ve ever had the privilege of working with. Back in the early 00’s we worked at City Cycle SF, a lovely shop that sold Surly, Salsa, Seven & Serotta.
Long time subscriber, first time commenter. This clip struck a cord and wanted to say hello from Waterford, Ireland. It was thru your channel that I found out about Waterford bicycles and I'm trying to source one ever since. Cheers!
thanks so much for sharing your trip. I bought my first Riv this year and love it. the guys in the shop were great when I placed my order and have quickly answered all my questions. you nailed it when you said the industry needs more Rivendell. they make cycling accessible to everyone. racing is awesome but even better is people like Grant and his team, Russ Roca (Path Less Pedaled), Velo Orange, and of course the BikeFarmer. please keep taking us along on your adventures!
Great tips on packing a bike for airline travel. We visited Rivendell about 12 years ago and Grant was really gracious. At the time, I said it’s like knocking on the door at Graceland and Elvis invites you in for a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Grant was excited to learn that we’re from Montana, where he has spent time fly fishing. I don’t own any Rivendells, but I have purchased lots of parts for Bridgestone restorations. A Riv all-rounder with S&S couplers came up on eBay a few months ago, and I’m kicking myself for not snagging it. Keep up the good work!
I used AirTags when I flew to France with my tandem. Bummer when only ONE suitcase arrived. But the AirTag told me EXACTLY where the "lost" half of our bike was - at our layover airport. Happy it hadn't been crushed or destroyed and it made it to us 3 days later in time for our ride.
Awesome! The California coast is the best. If you can, the road between Pfeiffer Park and Monterey was a ride I did a lot when I was going to military language school. There’s another small park we rode up to (it is one MONSTER climb) was Botchers Gap. Absolutely beautiful. There was a landslide that closed Route 1 back when I was riding in that area. Always wished I could go back and ride to Hearst Castle area. Have fun out there!!
Next time you are out west it would be awesome if you do a meet up or a group ride. You seem like a real down to dart bike lover and it could be a lot of fun!
Enjoy your warm time. Good to see a long standing business survive without being taken over and destroyed. Im going to gobread Grant's book while the temps her in WI dive below zero.
Love that you're doing this. I'm in Berkeley (East Bay, on the Bay immediately to the north of Oakland). Walnut Creek qualifies as an "eastern suburb" although I never hear it get referred to as such around here. It's later-developed, suburban-y layout that developed more post-automobile, but mostly it's on the other side of the ridgeline that runs mostly North-South along the eastern edge of Oakland/Berkeley. Guessing you already wrapped up the trip, hope it was enjoyable. Also: I should really go visit Rivbike. I've increasingly realized that they do most of the things I've settled on that I like.
Ha! Pretty good timing. I happened to meet a Rivendell employee a few months ago. Been meaning to drop in there while on a ride and visiting R & A Cycles in Walnut Creek. I'm 15 miles away as the crow flies, and you beat me to it... from Wisconsin! Sheesh! I recommend you give immersion wax a go for that travel bike. Your chain will thank you. Your chainrings will thank you. Your cogs will thank you. You'll be amazed when all that black gunk becomes a thing of the past. Oh so clean... and that's a secondary benefit to the awesome performance of wax. Unreal. Can't believe I waited so long to make the switch! Too bad about the audio, but you could tell Grant was a cool guy willing to help a bike mechanic figure out a mechanical issue. Beautiful bikes new and old at that shop.
I wrap my cheap folding bike in a squishy pad in a carry bag, and check it for free on southwest. Unfold at the airport, and I can ride away. Nice video. Looks pretty cool. This is actually the first I have heard of Rivendell. Nice to see there are still companies that exist making simple steel bikes in America that look like they came from the 70s. I cant tell in the pics, but are they still making cantilever brakes? Based on your other videos, its easy to see why you like these bikes so much.
Just a few seconds before you said it I was thinking “it’s a cyclists Mecca”😁 What an experience and thanks for sharing. Looking forward to seeing what videos come out from this trip. Happy vacation!
Welcome to California Andy. What a great tour at Rivendell! I’ll have to take a trip up there someday and check out their shop. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Cheers!
So Cool!! Pretty special visit for you and they all seemed so down to earth. I had never heard of Rivendell Bikes or Grant Petersen till I met you BF and bought a couple of bikes from you last fall. you recommended Grant's book, Just Ride. I bought it, I read it...fun read and good advice in there. Thanks for all of your content and help
I am Canadian, so the Wisconsin accent doesn't sound that different to me. But the pronunciation of french words like "randonneur" and "derailleur" are fun. Great content as always!
Those are beautiful bikes, I'm glad you visited Rivendell. They kind of remind me of the old Raleigh Sprite I had that was still made in England, but without all the proprietary Raleigh parts. TSA opens everything, they root through my plain old suitcase. They even cut off locks that aren't holding anything. Stuff that's not time sensitive I ship back via UPS or FED-Ex on the return trip. That way the TSA doesn't touch it and it shows up at my door rather than the airport. That would work to get the bike home. Obviously on the way out you need it with you unless you know someone out there that would manage the package early and keep it ready for when you arrived.
The bikes you tested looked straight out of early 1900s - which means that a good design is timeless! Very nice, I love that. I was a bit jealous of your having a builder like Rivendell handy, then I realized I have a small scale Rivendell just around the corner - and one of their bikes in my little room and with 10,000 km under the belt, so that will do!
I made the pilgrimage to Riv last summer from Minnesota. What a gem of a place. I didn’t get to meet Grant but I got to say Hi to all of the other guys. What a cool crew. Thanks for filming it bike farmer. Maybe I’ll get to ride with you this year if you come over and to a rando ride with the Minnesota crew. By the way I’m doing the pancake 200k Friday if you’re up for it.
Great shop visit with Rivendell. And insights from a veteran bike tourist on packing. I am adding this year a Kona Sutra as a traveling tour bike, and case, for Eastern-Midwest rail trails or Southern Arizona in the winter. I am not Rivendell bike class, but I am a customer on parts and accessories, plus grouse at Grant’s latest book. Or agree on much.
@klarkolofsson it does appear your statement is mostly true. Their production frames are primarily built in Taiwan. But, are crmo, steel frames like theirs built anymore by anyone else? I'm sure Taiwan ensures lower production costs for high-production frames. I understand the custom frames are still made in California. I don't know if that satisfies webster's dictionary's requirements for a business to be called a factory, but it sure seems like one to me. The Shimano components most people choose aren't made by rivendell either. They sure make great bikes by whatever process one wants to use. Let's call it elvish magic.
This video pooped up in my feed. lol my bike is now TH-cam famous. I picked up my Platypus up that weekend. It’s the one in the background without grips. It’s in the shot where Grant was showing you that “pStyle” product. Hope you enjoyed your time out here in the Bay!
@@cominnrc I’m pretty sure the coroplast boxes are available somewhere googleable. Delta wanted a hard shell container. I know many folks just use bike boxes.

The Shimano components most people choose aren't made by rivendell either. They sure make great bikes by whatever process one wants to use. Let's call it elvish magic.
Really enjoyed this. I love Rivendell bicycles. Great channel. Hopefully we’ll get to see some clips of your CA rides. Enjoy.
Nice! Enjoy...
This video pooped up in my feed. lol my bike is now TH-cam famous. I picked up my Platypus up that weekend. It’s the one in the background without grips. It’s in the shot where Grant was showing you that “pStyle” product. Hope you enjoyed your time out here in the Bay!
2:30 good, ’cause TSA won’t let you take your pedal wrench in your carry-on.
Those were some cool bikes
Thanks, very helpful as I have never shipped my Rivbike.
Excellent
Oh Man! What a fun weekend!!! It’s on my bucket list as well
Perfect timing. I’m planning an overseas bike packing trip and this is one area I’m nervous about.
@@cominnrc I’m pretty sure the coroplast boxes are available somewhere googleable. Delta wanted a hard shell container. I know many folks just use bike boxes.
Marin bike tour sounds awesome! I’ll be in the city of SF too and hoping to ride bikes. Visiting a family member but didn’t ride bikes. The night is young. Have a great time!
Well done BF!
I stopped in there years ago (2002) but didn’t get your star treatment ; )
Wow. I just left San Francisco. Two weeks without my bike. Looking forward to your adventures. 🚴
That’s awesome that you’re stopping at Riv! Tell Grant, I can’t wait to see the new E bike!
The Bike Orphanage abides.
Simply wonderful presentation.
