I have a theory: they are CEO not because they studied engineering but because studying engineering requires you to work the logical and analytical muscle of your brain. And being able to think logically is an important skill to have as a CEO. I reckon if you done a brain scan of a bunch of CEOs brains, that the regions responsible for abstract thinking would be larger than average. A particular region of Einstein's brain is 20% larger than the average human responsible for imagination.
nahhh because they all lead tech companies and know what's good for their company. MBA CEOs are taught how to manage and lead for maximum profit, but that is useless if they don't have a full grasp of their company's vision.
Do you mean physical size of brain? I don't think it'll be larger but their IQ in logical test would be higher or atmost they'll have 1-2% more muscles in that part

One of the most underestimated aspect of engineering is that it forces you to learn how to learn, which basically unlocks your capacity to learn about any subject you’re interested in. Much success in your goals, I also felt excited when I saw this video and I am about to do a student exchange at the University of La Coruña to help me get my degree.
Can confirm, I'm about to graduate in engineering and throughout my entire college life Goldman Sachs kept trying to hire engineers at my university to work for them. Not because they needed any engineering expertise, but their internal data showed that their most productive and lucrative employees all had engineering backgrounds. So they actually started focusing on trying to sway engineering students to go to the business side and focused less on hiring MBAs. Not to sound mean, but engineering students within 2 years have better math and critical thinking skills than most business students at that same time (and yes we can write internal documents, lab reports and research reports drilled that into our heads. And of course engineers have social skills, imagine group projects cranked to 11 for design courses.) A course in economics is really all that's necessary for them to figure out what they need to do, or a month or 2 on the job. The other 2 years of hell are just a stamp of approval to say that they're very disciplined and their brain can work in overdrive in severe stress.
My two cents: Don't work at JP Morgan because the pay sucks for a vast majority of the posistions they offer. I'm an engineering student and I'll never go work in the finance industry simply because the pay is awful.
Hello, I don't know if you have already graduated, if so, let me congratulate you for the great effort you made to reach the end of this career, I'm sure it was a great challenge. by statistics it is very comfortable to think that engineers and only engineers are the ones that give results and more if you were there to witness this event, I am sure that any other student outside the engineering area would also be suitable as the MBA, since it depends personally of the capacity of the person in my opinion, for the better or for worse, it is true that engineers have more opportunities to grow because of the educational background they have and also because of the history of developed skills, we know a little about everything to a degree professional, all and more as engineers we must know how to apply our personal knowledge and skills in a good way to achieve our goals, I really liked your comment, have a good day.
I am a VP at Morgan Stanley and what you say is the half truth. Yes engineers are way better at math and hence are way better at analyst roles especially the quant jobs. But as you go higher up to associate and VP levels, skills from accounting, management and law become more imp as you have internal controls, costing, management and compliance to look after and then business students get the upper hand. Ofc the executives won't tell you this as we want engineers to do the math stuff for us but the fact is most of them get stuck at analyst. Those who go up do an MBA or something like CFA, that's the ugly truth. No one is gonna tell you this, I am even saying this as this is a burner account exactly for things like this.
Exactly, engineers tend to have administration skills but the difference is that they have math and exact science behind them. Therefore they have stronger tools for business problem solving and optimization.

I hate business grads. Every one I know with a business related degree are snobs who looks down on the production. They only care about being the boss and sharing wolf of wall street photos.
I think its more a difference in personality. Engineers are very smart but not very outgoing, and have a harder time talking to people in general. Business majors are the opposite. Both are needed in the company, the business major talks to the client and tells the engineering major what kind of product they want. This is of course easier said than done since the engineering major knows that some things arent possible. This can lead to complaining on both sides and a lot of misunderstanding.
Not all engineering degrees are equal, most CEOs come from electrical engineering which is the hardest one. You won't see civil engineers on the CEO lists for example
With whatever engineering knowledge I've gained doing my engineering, I can assure you that the target audience of this video are engineers and aspiring engineers.
No i do not think so, i think they want people to train more their logical and problem solving abilities because mostly economics and real problems require real solutions where people put their hands on the things they are doing, usually when someone start a bussiness if that person priorices their bussiness to solve problems instead of thinking what could be the millonaire idea to give they money, its not limited to a engineer but to logical, mathematics and problem solving capabilities, but for worse, one is usually fixing logical things when one study as engineer, software or mechatronics you usually wake up and look at your workplace thinking you need to do this and that or try to do this with that daily, every day, so you master the ability of learn to solve things trying differents things and being logical, most MBAs usually do not chew to solve problems as continously as engineers who are most trained on puting hands on it daily and with the solving problems mindset instead of thinking in other way (well of course there are people on both sideways but you mostly gonna find a problem solver on an engineers school than other places).
I'm not, although I'm an aspiring physicist which is like engineering mixed with philosophy and the problem solving is extremely demanding, not to mention mathematics which is a true nightmare, much harder than anything engineers have to deal with.

MBA programs just give you tools just like anything else. I went to school for computer engineering, and now I am learning BA and PM concepts to apply to my work. The real reason why so many effective CEOs are engineers is because they are taught on how to apply concepts in the real world. Engineering is also called Applied Science. It is the application of theoretical (scientific) concepts and making them a reality.
i think the BA is most focus in theory than practical and the engineering is mos focus in the field and the company neededs thats why most of the engineers can understand and adapt to systems.
@@jesusignaciocubedofelix4184 i don't agree that BA is more focused on theory, but it's hard for me to convince you if you haven't done that role before. Engineering typically doesn't concern itself with how you run a business. But imagine you have a large company full of engineers that make the best product, without someone to build and maintain the development and production process the company is probably going to fail.
@Yejune Lee you can be a CEO too, just pay government money and put your name down as the CEO. I went into engineering to build things. This is true engineering is an applied science where theory has a reason for being and this is to be able to do practical things and understand why of them. This field is very interesting, because it shows us that the most complex things can be very simple as long as you give them the right approach, it happened to me, when I was little I looked at engineering things in books, focused on the mathematical area and I did not understand anything, I thought it was for geniuses and they were things impossible to solve. Now that I'm at university and studying engineering, I ran into those kinds of problems again and luckily everything was much more familiar, it was just a matter of understanding everything. It was gratifying to see that I was able to respond to my smaller self, even though it is still a little difficult for me.

Your comment it’s very inspiring, I really liked it, and I agree and believe in the power of skills and initiative as a way to reach a high position in a company.
I agree with your comment since it is not necessary to be an engineer to be a good leader for the simple fact that studying is not going to give you that ability if you as a person are not willing to be adaptable to your environment.
I agree with your comment being very interesting, because in reality it is true what you say, it is not "for what I have", but "for what I can offer and what I am willing to do to adapt", besides sharing your opinion that the real leaders are those who take risks and go out to the field, because if you stay on the bench you will not really learn.
My rationale is that different disciplines of engineering are a subset of physics, in which physics is the general principle. If you can do physics, you can do any engineering
True, engineering is actually considered a jr science when compared to physics. During my school's briefing they said a physicist can do any job an engineer can, and probably better. 🥴hehe

Great video. It's all about the passion and love for doing what makes you happy. Engineering or MBA, the successful ones loved what they were doing and were willing to work hard and commit time and effort.
It doesn’t matter if you have an engineering degree or a MBA, they are successful simply because they have the vision and a strong work ethic to help them reach their goal.
Apart from the social skills that an engineer needs and that allows them to be great leaders, I believe that engineers are the best decision makers, because the capacity for analysis, interpretation and evaluation that is instilled in them, allows them to have the quality of leadership of the highest level.
I agree with your comment, because in reality it is something that not many have emphasized, because we only talk about how important engineering is, but we forget that without a good communication with your team many things could not be achieved, because it is a collaboration of ideas and minds, that led in a correct way can achieve unimaginable things.

When i was in school they teach about the theory of how a computer works and then for a project you program a device to do something. But imagine you have a large company full of engineers that make the best product, without someone to build and maintain the development and production process the company is probably going to fail.
@Yejune Lee you can be a CEO too, just pay government money and put your name down as the CEO. I went into engineering to build things.
I opened up 2 companies and made myself the CEO for both of them. But i eventually closed them because it's too much work to manage the company. I rather work on building the products instead.

It was gratifying to see that I was able to respond to my smaller self, even though it is still a little difficult for me.
I'd say it's more than applied science. It's business too. You make it a reality AND business viable.

I agree with the original comment and the one in response, since creativity is something we develop ourselves and not through school, although it also gives us a guide, but we are curious by nature, so we are always waiting to know more and how we can improve and innovate.
I agree a lot with you, he is the person who makes the change and with the right knowledge you can advance in great things, likewise personal motivation and the vision of a position are needed, since many do not aspire to the same thing, engineering is very Versatile and logic and creativity are necessary, as well as social skills, but all this only works if you know how to apply it in the context that is required because the same knowledge does not take us all to the same place.

As an engineer, they are able to understand the products of their companies as well as manufacturing and R & D. This jack of all trades in knowledge would obviously make good CEOs as well.
Yes, i agree because i think MBA´s mainly know only the business side, because they are taught how to run a business. Not really about the product they make or sell.
The engineers has the skills that a CEO requires because always they want to find solutions for the problems or improve the process.
They can apply analytical thinking and a process approach to the biggest questions facing their management team, they think about everything from sales to development programs.

A good leader is one that knows their product in every phase, one that can intervene in every step of the way.
I also think the same as you, I think that to be CEO you must know absolutely everything about the company and who is better than an engineer who is the one who made the product that the company sells.

Im a student too ,engineering is a multidisciplinary training that has always been the majority senior managers, engineers develop multidisciplinary skills that prepare them to carry out their work as senior executive positions, and be able to develop in many areas within any company even for daily life problems.
Engineering is quite a big degree. Beside having a large understanding of physics, chemistry and maths, you also have to develop a specific kind of problem solving skill, which allows you to find the most cost and energy efficient solution to a certain issue.
Mathematics, luck, intelligence, hard work, invention capabilities and business savvy go a long way for someone to make a lot of money

Currently making $500k+ 4 years out of college. I'm engineering major and I currently work in marketing & consulting. I've never used a single technical thing I learned during these 5 years, but.. having the resilience to keep working on a problem, being comfortable with numbers and not feeling unmotivated when you have to learn something you have absolutely no f idea what it is are the valuable things I learn during college that I carried with me for the rest of my life.
You don't need to be an engineer to be a good leader, while being one will definitely help you lead the company from a technical perspective. But, it's the initiative that's primary. As far as I'm concerned, that's the thing. A degree or a skill can only get you so far. The greatest engineers aren't the greatest business leaders, the bravest engineers and non engineers who want to change the world are.
With physics you cannot do computer engineering a.k.a. applied computer science.
said no physicist nor engineer ever
And mathematics is the king of all those fields
It only applies (and just partially) for industrial engineering, information engineering relies more on pure math l think
True, engineering is actually considered a jr science when compared to physics.

Engineers can recognize and appreciate the work of engineers, which leads to excellence. Non-engineers need others to tell them what is good and what is not.
