    I have used Mackie's for more years than I care to admit. I use them for gigs and I use them for recording, and I use them as sub mixers in the signal chain! Mackie is NOT kidding when they say that they are built like a tank. When you are doing gigs - if they are not tough (and I mean tough) they are going to let you down. If they don't have enough head room - they will let you down, if they can't keep working when dropped, and yanked, they will let you down. Mackie has NEVER ever let me down. They are very quiet (no internal noise, NO scratchy pots, SOLID connections - even after YEARS of use). I have had lots of things fail on stage, cables, mics, power cables, but never a Mackie. You still want to treat your equipment well and take care of it, but gigging on stage, loading in and loading out? Things can happen (and unfortunately do). OK, I have written enough, get a Mackie, they won't let you down, and will always sound great!!

      Thanks for sharing your experience, Cynthia. I would agree. Only issue I ever had with one was an early model USB version and the phantom power switch has a loose connection and the USB had a hum which Mackie acknowledge and fixed in the next generation. But I have still used the same mixer for live shows and it handled everything I threw at it. Great stuff.

    Nice job, Ray! I'm gearing up to make a mixer purchase and your recent episodes have been really helpful.

      Curtis Judd oh cool, great to hear! What are leaning towards and are you starting a podcast!?;)

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ray Ortega I'd like to be able to do a mix minus so that I can do interviews and I'm intrigued by the Onyx preamps. Too bad this one doesn't have the aux send. But I'd be willing to go up to the next model (802VLZ4). Or perhaps I should hold out and get a mixer I can use for mixing films that integrates with DAWs (which I totally understand is a completely different league).
      I like your focus on the preamps and build quality. Those are my highest priorities as well. I've toyed with the idea of a podcast but not quite sure where to start or how to fit that in with my YT channel.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Curtis Judd cool. I think I might have bugged you once to start a DSLR one with me and if I had more time I might bug you again to do it;) Usually with a mixer, you have to buy something that does much more than you need it to do in order to get all the features you need. Like getting a massive number of channels to get all the aux sends you need etc. A digital mixer is an area I haven't look into very much. I have used some firewire stuff that works with DAWs but on a pretty limited basis, mainly just to record multichannel. I haven't done any real mixing via a mixer into a DAW.

    Nice video! Great review. Fantastic lighting, DOF, focus pulls, audio etc. You made me enjoy watching this because the video was well put together yet smart and casual. I just bought this mixer and I'm excited to put it to work. Will be using it in conjunction with a Zoom H4n that I already own and use for mobile purposes. The Zoom will give me the USB interface I need while the Mackie provides a simple, bullet proof analog mixing solution.
    Stoked!

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Brock Boot wow, amazing feedback, thanks so much Brock! Congrats on the new mixer, I love this little tank. You may want to consider skipping the computer and just recording into the H4n. That would be my preferred method but you might be doing additional things that require the computer.

    • @brock.maarten
      @brock.maarten 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your welcome man! Keep it up!
      Yes, I need the PC because I'm using the H4 usb interface for my Rode xlr shotgun mic to work as a live steaming mic (skype, hangouts, gaming, etc...). The mixer allows me to run skype/hangouts audio from my laptop, game or program audio on my desktop, and a live monitor from the H4 into my ears all at once. The key is that I'm able to to record the chat signal separate from the game/program audio on the primary computer.
      Your solution would be fantastic for recording though and I will likely do that if I ever take things mobile for podcasting!

    So breaking out of the $100 range, it appears the Mackie ProFX4v2 looks like a real winner. Has everything the mackie 402vlz4 does but with an fx send, equalizer, and a bit more goodness. Seems like the more sensible route for me anyways.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Bradley Hanstad yes but with lesser preamps. I haven't tested it yet but I know on the Mackie Mix series which also has non-Onyx preamps, they are still nice and clean just about 10db weaker.

    Hello i watched all the video of sub 100 dollar mixer. Which one has the better mic preamp, the behringer (xenyx) or the mackie mix 8(not onyx)? Also is there a big difference in the sound quality of mackie mix 8 and 402vlz4? Thanks

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  ปีที่แล้ว

      Been a long time since I had these mixers but I'd mostly choose Mackie over Behringer though if the Behringer has options you need, they've always done a good job for me.

  • @TheMarkShenouda
    @TheMarkShenouda 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video!! Though i need help.
    So whats more versatile and sound quality between VLZ4 and profx.
    I'm about to buy either the 802VLZ4 or the Profx8v2.
    Intended use:
    - For broadcast (plug into an i.p. console which is a basic and pre-programed, only control is volume and mute, hence needing the preamp and mixer)
    - m.c. live shows e.g. weddings, balls and even trivia nights with the use of ipod input but mainly focusing on microphone.
    Optional use:
    (and would be nice)
    To plug to the computer for voice overs, even might start doing pod-casting from home.
    Microphone being used is:
    - live: Wireless digital beta 58a.
    - Radio: sennheiser md421 ii and/or shure beta 58a or sm58
    To be honest i don't care about the fx part, the eq looks handy in a way but no drama. It just had an upper hand due to USB.
    I could get smaller units but i like to have the extra inputs.
    I've done that much research comparing Yamaha mg10xu, A and H zedi10fx and my head is going crazy.
    What do you reckon.
    And p.s. thanks heaps for taking the time out to read and respond

    Question, please- Is it possible to do a mix-minus with a Mackie Mix12fx (it does not have ‘aux’ dials and ‘aux send’, but it does have ‘fx’ dials and an ‘fx send’.

    Ray, not really related to this video topic, but why did you choose to use a lavalier over using your boom microphone?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use the lav a lot cause it's really easy. Let's me move around if necessary. So setups are quicker and I can run the lav directly into the camera and still get great audio.

    Hey Ray - Thanks for your video, you do a great job. If I used a Y-cable from the output could I go directly into a DSLR camera input to capture mixed audio for videos? I have a Zoom H4N but this seems it could be more straight forward. If you have done a video on the Zoom H4N, I've missed it somehow. I'm needing to capture a vocal mic and a guitar mic. I really appreciate your time sir. Faith Hope Peace - Bruce.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ten til Two Music that would be line level into your DSLR and that's too "hot." I wouldn't suggest it. This old video shows my setup with the H4n which would allow you to input both a vocal mic. and a guitar mic. th-cam.com/video/lJYdjHbnrV0Y/w-d-xo.htmlou have the same issue with line level but an attenuation cable can make it work.

    Hey Ray,
    Very helpful review of the Mackie 402VLZ4 Mixer.
    I've been looking into the Mackie Mixers and had a question for you. I wanted to know between the 402VLZ4 and Mix8 series, which mixer would best suit a karaoke system? The system is made up of a laptop, 2 XLR mics and basic speakers. Thanks.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Owen Kelly thanks. There is an "iMic" listed here thepodcastersstudio.com/mackie-402vlz4-mixer/ in the "Not As Good" section, that is an easy way to get it into the computer and you'd connect the mixer and iMic using a cable like this podhelp.me/hosayinsert3ft (referral links)

    Hey Ray, this was a great series of videos!! I'm purchasing a Mackie 402VLZ4 following your recommendation, however the Griffin iMic is hard to come by in Australia. Would the Behringer UCA222 be a good alternative? Or could you recommend something else? Cheers :)

    • @nuurnwui
      @nuurnwui 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      UCA222 is about the cheapest option. Haven't tried it, but it has unbalanced INs like the Griffin thingy. I expect that these days many laptops have about the same quality with inbuilt sound card. The Mackie Onyx preamps are about the best in their class. To match those, check Focusrite, Steinberg or one of those 2 channel interfaces around 100 bucks. There is a Mackie mixer with usb built in, but with lesser preamps.

    • @CineMaddox
      @CineMaddox 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Shame it don't have Aux Send, and the Mix8 have it but the Output level is so short...

    Hello Ray. Thanks for the video. I am just preparing for my Podcast. I have purchased the Heil PR 40 Dynamic microphone. Will this mixer work for me if I am also planning to interview people over Skype or Telephone?

    • @HarveyYoungConsulting
      @HarveyYoungConsulting 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Looks like I wrote my question too early. Seems that I may want to go to the Mix8.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you were just going to connect to Skype and use Skype recording software then this mixer would work. But if you want to add sound fx, other audio clips or use an external recorder as a back up or primary then you'd need something with an Aux send like the Mix8 in order to do a proper mix-minus setup.

    Thanks for the review. Do you know if all of the knobs (gain, level, main mix, EQ, etc.) have "pauses" at the U (unity gain) spots, so you can know for sure you're stopping at exactly the right spot if you want no change in signal level or EQ?
    By "pause" I of course mean a little notch where it sort of stops turning once you get exactly to the center or "U", like you often find on L/R balance knobs.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +versusversus good question. It's called the knob's "detent" position and you can feel it click once it's there. I've been looking for the last 20 minutes and can't find the answer and unfortunately my memory is too bad to remember. I would think so because it's built so well but I didn't see it listed in the manual so I can't say yes or not. Wish I could be of more help. Thanks for watching!

    • @willstott2564

    Is it possible to choose which input will go to the main mix and which one to the headphone output? In one input I have a click track which I would like to hear in the headphone output, but I would not like to hear it in the main mix to which the audio recorder is connected.

    • @farway-417
      @farway-417 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 'tape-in' connection (rca) has a button labelled "TO MAIN" which does that. If it is pressed audio goes to all (headphones, main, tape-out). Depressed it goes only to the headphones.
