Kalamata is a city on the Peloponnese in Greece with about 80,000 inhabitants. It is located at the head of the Messenian Gulf. Kalamata is famous for its olives and olive oil.
Kalamata is located on the site of an ancient city whose identity is still disputed. The name refers to ancient Calamae, but Homer mentioned that ancient city Pharae was located here.
