Jaycen Joshua demonstrates how he transformed drums and percussions on Rosalia's track "Malamente".
This unique set of videos uncovers the template and highly sought-after techniques used by the exceptionally talented mixer. Using a new ITB mix session of the hypnotic 2018 single ‘Malamente’ by Spanish artist Rosalía, Jaycen shows you how he managed to craft a fully digital mix that competes with his original console mix. He discusses and plays the source tracks, then demonstrates how he treated them using his innovative template and plug-in settings. Aside from the technical aspect, Jaycen tells of how his involvement in the project began, the collaboration with artist and producer, his sonic expression through personal taste, optimizing transients and voltage for perceived loudness, mastering, and more. To make this series even more special, we have featured the legendary Dave Pensado asking Jaycen some very pertinent questions about his approach!

"Sometimes wrong is right. Sometimes you gotta make something not beautiful to understand how beautiful it is."
dude is a genius
this guy is a wizard... the way he added transients back in to compensate for the gain reduction from compression, truly blew my mind !!
Don't have clue what you are talking about but he really is a wizard
Isolating the transients with slow attack, hard compression and putting back only the top end is a genius idea.
pretty standard, shaperbox can be super helpful too to draw in a curve that allows you to hit a compressor if youre too squashed
@@gd.4698 🤣🤣🤣
The tops guys are insanely gifted at smashing the heck out of something and then give it life again.
"Sometimes wrong is right"... so true!
bruh that creative use of the noise suppressor is making me rethink my whole existence
Me too. I don’t like using that thing on things because it takes away some of the presence of the sound, but after seeing how he used it I’m gonna try using it creatively
1:00 .... poofy..That's my first time hearing that in reference to drums... nice!
yeah it cames from the 80´s and back in the day´s it was Poopy
Interesting adding that guitar distortion vst as a fl studio like sub enhancer. I need to play with my 808’s some more...
what on earth do you mean by "fl studio like sub enhancer"? You need to go back to basics if you use wording like that.
@@noname-ng6sj Dude get a life… I think it was pretty clear… only you didn’t get it. Fl studio has a distinct distorted sound with its limiter/saturator. It really makes some 808 samples sound more wider or dirtier.
Definitely should play ✌🏻
I need to see this whole video. Every video I've seen on Jacyne hes dropping gems.
This guy is living my dream, love learning from him ❤️
Jaycen, thanks! Thank you Mix with the Masters! Y’all have no idea! But yet you do!
This is major!
Thank you, for the excellent teaching and examples.
I was so lost once he hit the transients and once it connected I was blown away
noise suppressor took it to the next level
"I'm taking away the fidelity... I'm fucking this loop up."
And *now* it sounds dope.
Genius
Great insight for some of the things I wished to acheive in the past
NS1 trick is NICE ✅
I hear the difference know what’s it’s doing?
@@davonyoung6758 some noise supressors usually take off some high freqs.. he used it as a tool to cut those "clicky transients"
@@arturpompeunah the exact opposite, he used it to cut off the tail of the individual sounds in the loop so it isn’t cluttered that much and it gets even punchier!
THEY BACK
Awesome insight to this. Totally have some ideas for a new mix i am working on because of this. Thank you!
bLOWING mind creativité
this guy have a rolls royce in his ear
God bless this man
Did J just make a Fruity Loops crack for drums? Lol! Dope as shit bruh!
Love to see someone else use NS-1 like this!
J aint shy about pluggin his ability.

Thanks for the Dr. Dre compressor tip at 5:30
Can anyone explain his NLS bus trick?

@@LaFaMiMusic Amazing, thanks man!
@@officialkokomusic1784 you're welcome !
Cool!
6:40 what does he mean the distortion that FL studio adds?
I think he means the sound you get when you clip in FL.
@@robertlydeckermusic thanks yeah that seems to make the most sense
FL has a specific way it sounds when it clips.
LIVING LEGEND!
I know this might be a stupid question but is that transient bus post or pre fader? Great tip! ❤
I’m new to mixing, so can someone clarify why he created 2 transformer tracks instead of just applying those effects to the chain of the original track?
The GOAT!
where there will be another seminar with Jaycen Joshua at Studios la Fabrique?
That guy does some amazing shit with plugins
What kind of A/R settings on the multiband compression?
I suspect it's the default Pro-MB - saw him use a similar thing on a different video.
Default, unless it's necessary to change the settings.

Dr.Dre Crossed eye!!
Mix engineers: You see I've added subtle compression to this one frequency
Color grading: You see I've added subtle warmth to this one pixel
Audiophile: You see I've added subtle clarity to this rca cable
Wine snob: You see I've added subtle oxygen to this rich flavor
Dan Worrall: Why does it null?
The goat!!!
ah yes the goat
Q : his Transformer aux tracks. Are these outside of his main drum bus or do they go into it. Thanks
Bless me GOAT
Can anyone with more experience explain to me what he meant at 06:19 while saying that MV2 plug-in is basically "a front-to-back panner". How come it can affect depth? Thank you in advance!
Front to back "depth" is controlled mainly by volume. He's very deliberately only adding volume to the focused transient information so that the perceived volume of that part is much bigger without clouding the mix with all the rest of the sonic information of that track. So when he brings the MV2 in low, and then slowing starts to raise up the volume to taste, he's basically dialing the "front to back" level. Adding the Decapitator and such is next level. It's all super subtle, but when you add up all of his high level, subtle moves, you get superb, Grammy winning records. Jaycen is a master at the craft for sure.
@@ntcowing What a wonderful comment, thanks a lot, Dave. You are absolutely right, these masters are distinguished with their taste.
Great creativity! Tks
Amazing! I'm way out of my league here. 😃
Thanks a lot for the video!
I really wish MWTM was less expensive...
At 06:20, does he refer to the depth aspect of the mix?
could someone explain what is this master call C DRUMS M and what is that for?
Awesome
Dope ass techniques brother! Thanks for sharing 🙌🏽

Already a beast but still far from reaching his ceiling. Very scary times.
Could someone tell me the routing procedure of the transformer/transformer 2/louder sends? Would he be outputting those directly to his mix bus?
Looks like they’re routed to the drum bus
@@milestaylor8136 he's using them as send effects on the drum bus, but I'm wondering where he's outputting those aux channels.
@@allcapsbeats I could be mistaken, as I’m not familiar with protools, but I think he’s sending the individual tracks to those returns so they’re processed in parallel. And then all of them, including the returns, are sent to the “ALL DRUMS” bus
@@milestaylor8136 ahhhhh. Interesting. Damn, that's a whole lot of parallel. I'mma give it a try. Thanks! I suppose you have way more control over individual elements that way. Then all you have to do is mess with the fader on the returns to your liking.
Hey guys, which DAW is he using?
Pro Tools
Best mix engineer in the world hands down.
Lmao not even close. The greatest mixing engineer ever to live is dr Dre
I've never heard Dave not speak...

What is the Pro Q on the MV2 beat comp aux doing? Anyone?

very skillful for sure, but only natural, unedited sounds ever gave me chills and goose bumps. Never experienced that with such produced sounds..
Gonna login tonight and see how he does this without phasing issues

4:40 whats this about a Dr.Dre preset?
yessss! lmao! I'm curious too!
It`s just the standard mixbus preset that the ssl bus comp is basically known for. Attack: slowest setting, Release: fastest setting. 4:1 ratio. It`s a setting that has been used forever by basically everyone.
30 sec attack .1 release 2 to 1 ratio JJ even states this in the vid

wtf is up with the million nls busses on the drum bus loooooool
A simple move of how he adds back in voltage and harmonics what he takes away from the raw signal, explained on a different video of his. I use NLS myself and it does add girth to the shape and tone to the things applied upon.
I don't know if this is motivating or just makes me wanna give up.
There are levels to everything. To be a master, you must remain a student. You probably know a lot more than me and can do things that seem hard to me but probably come easy. I look at this and I think, I cant wait to get to this level.
Rosalía. Malamente song.
Lol i'm too used to seeing mixing videos of engineers with artists idk bout and this dude's just nonchalantly mixing fucking Rosalia 😂
Oh crap, creative drum machine mixing! I was looking for creative drum mixing with drums, real ones. OH well, thanks anyway!
I love real drums :)
Why can't this tutorial be applied to real drums?
Well there are plenty of those videos online. Why go to one with electric drums and complain that they’re not real drums? Just watch one on real drums if that’s what you want. Problem solved.
Hey, that Tambor is actually real. It's called "tambor herreño", a very old percussion instrument from the Canary Islands, where El Guincho (the producer) is from. It's the glue to the song and the best part with Rosalía's vocals.

every time you engage the plugins it sounds way worse than the original.

Every plugin has a color, obviously the sound sound worse but in this case, firer, in mixing you always need to give up something to have a different impact and mixing is always a trade, something less something more

I thought it was going to be about drums, as in the instrument that's played by a human being with some musical ability. You know? Drums? Usually cylindrical in shape. This video is about synthetic fart sounds. This is not something worthy of discussion.
Thanks for your comments on a man who has multiple billions of streams and a few grammy’s to his name 😃 how much streams do your drum videos have bro?
Are those small little EQ changes really audible? No… of course not.
If you can't hear them, definitely do some ear training.
