📍 Raymond Burr’s early acting career has been featured on Broadway, radio, television and film, usually as a villain. In the thriller Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window, the suspect is the most well-known film role, although he is also remembered for his role in the 1956 film Godzilla, King of Monsters, which he repeated in the 1985 film Godzilla 1985. In 1959 and 1961, he won an Emmy Award for his acting role as Perry Mason, which he played for nine seasons (1957-1966). But there is a secret life he created...let's find out why?

I've watched a few of your videos which while interesting, are extremely repetitive. You say the same thing three or four times! I think you should either write a script and stay with it or do some editing.

I’ve been binging Perry Mason these last few days. Reminds me of the good ole’ days when movies and TV were, shall-we-say, wholesome.

That's all very well & good, but the fact remains that Burr's homosexuality would have just murdered his career had it been revealed full stop. Being gay meant being closeted & being closeted meant living with your own sword of Damocles over your head, always looking over your shoulder & wondering: "Is today the day who & what I really am is revealed & everything I've worked for is taken away from me & I'm reduced to the status of a pariah? Some Unclean Thing?"
Those were the stakes. Too many of Burr's fans would've turned on him & reduced him to poverty & obscurity if they'd known.
I didn't know he was a veteran, much less a heavily wounded combat vet. He seemed like a good man, adopting foster children and giving much of his salary to the USO and other organizations. Great actor, I liked to watch him playing gangster roles as well as the Perry Mason and Ironside series. His personal life should be just that - personal.
That's just it: he lied about being a vet. He was never in any of the armed services. He acted during the war, traveled the country, performing in places like Denver, at the Elitch Theatre. (It's the primary reason they did so many of the Mason movies there; he had friends from those days in Denver). He performed in one short-lived show on Broadway in NY in 1944. He did radio work. Like a lot of performers who weren't in the military, he joined with others to raise money for the war by doing War Bond tours. However, his insecurities always seemed to lead him to tell untrue stories. He never could bring himself to say he didn't serve during the war.
I loved him as an actor. It didn’t matter to me if he was gay or straight, he was a great actor.

I admired him and never cared what his personal life was like. It is sad how actors were treated in Hollywood. I hope he is at peace now
I never thought of him being gay but I really don't care because that was his life. I think he was a fantastic actor and that's all that matters to me
My thoughts exactly. I always liked him as a actor and never once wondered if he was gay or straight, because that didn't matter. For one I didn't care about his life, it was his business and second all I cared about was his acting.

So we'll stated! Never have understood why it is considered such a stigma to be "different". My twin cousins were so wonderful, and our family were blessed by their intelligence and loving natures. Their mates were great as well. Heartbroken when they passed away.

I was his sisters nurse and her friend . I got to meet him and he was a nice man. He thanked me for everything I did for her . She use to talk about him all the time . She had almost ever inch of the walls covered in his picture's . I know she knew about his life but she tried to keep the fake life going by telling me all about it . But later on she told me the truth after he passed away . I have always kept that to myself . She is in heaven now . I will never forget her and she was his biggest fan . Love you Geraldine.

I would be interested in what she told you about their parents. A coincidence that his father was in the military, lived in China (doing what?) and Raymond was in the military in counterintelligence conveniently before becoming an actor? Hollywood was/is a propaganda machine. I don't believe that this story is telling us the whole story. My guess his life was a role as an actor called Perry Mason and a military puppet in his real life. Another actor that conveniently had all these tragedies including a child that died. The American public is still star-struck, by the Hollywood stories. Even this narrator says as much.

He didn’t live a fake life. He lived a real life and allowed the perceptions of others to be what they wanted them to be to survive.

I never knew of Burr’s private life until 2021, a few months before this video was published (I was searching for his spouse). His acting career is what I’ve always known of him and learning about his private life does not change my opinion of him. He gave the world what he owed it, his gift of acting. He was one of the best actors of all time and that’s how he should be remembered.

Actually, I still watch Perry Mason. I enjoy him in his role as Defence Attorney, who always wins his cases. No matter what, I thank God that we had him in our presence for so long. All is well, I am not a judge, because my day will come. Thanks.

I too have a friend who is gay. For a time he was married to my niece, but they divorced were so that he could marry his male lover. They are still married. He still keeps in contact with my niece and sends her birthday cards every year on her birthday. My friend says that he should just leave her alone and quit sending her birthday cards. I tell my friend, that just because he might not have seen her as a sexual partner that didn’t stop him from loving her as a friend. I’m in the same situation as she is. I don’t approve of his life style but I still like him as a friend. If he were here now I’d be glad to give him a great big hug 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

Actors have had to fake marriages so they could keep working. Studios would make them date other celebrities at the same company to keep them popular. I personally think it's horrible what studio executives would make them do just to get work. If I'm not mistaken even Judy Garland from the Wizard of Oz had to perform on casting couches to continue working. The star of one of the most iconic children's movies wasn't exempt from such unbelievable sexual harassment. The one thing I am ashamed of is that "we the people" didn't stop watching the shows and movie's put out by these company's. Like when the sexual harassment at Hooters came out that company lost a lot business. Yes I am guilty of continuing watch all of the shows and movie's. There should have been some kind of reprimand of the studios to pay actors that were sexually harassed. Maybe they would not have died poor like so many did.

Perhaps you are fairly young and unaware of the reasons people had to live a lie. During those decades, if any man were to admit to being homosexual, it would result in immediate imprisonment. Furthermore, after court hearings and full prosecutions, many of these men were involuntarily committed to insane asylums; where they would be subjected to heinous and grotesque medical experimentation. Additionally, simply being suspected of being 'Gay' or knowing someone who was guilty of being Gay often resulted in arrest. It was absolutely ILLEGAL to be gay, BY LAW in the U.S.! Even into the 1970's!

I agree, Dave. I believe it would be better if we could just enjoy celebrities' work and any good they contribute to society. All this endless gossip about private lives has contributed to creating a society in which nothing is private, and the general opinion is everything is everybody's business.

When he played Ironside, i was sort of convinced he was actually wheelchair bound in real life later in his life. He was that good of an actor.
That's right, Jim! And when he told the foster child's caseworker that he would not harm the boy, she believed him! He was that good of an actor!
By the end of his life he was morbidly obese w a bad back and kinda did need a wheelchair but he was a great actor.
I suspect his legs went bad, either from arthritis or a genetic problem. And Ironside was created to allow him to make another series. Later when Perry Mason was brought back, he used a cane and in most standing shots h was leaning on something. eta: I just heard above that he got shrapnel in the back in WWII. Bingo?

I'm glad to know Raymond had a long and apparently happy relationship. He was a kind and generous man, and I'm certain that had a lot to do with his ability to keep his private life private. Just like in the rest of society, when a celebrity is an asshole, the people they've been mean to are all to eager to see them fall. But when a celebrity is known for their kindness and generosity, the people who know enough to ruin them are more likely to keep that celebrity's secret.

Raymond Burr's portrayal of Perry Mason is one of the best of a stoic, kind, mature man. Truly one to be emulated. We need more like him.

Nice! My cousin was a floral designer who also happened to be gay. He designed the flower arrangements for tv shows like Hotel and Falcon Crest. He became friends with Raymond Burr during Burr's later life. He always commented on how kind Mr Burr was.
You would think we would have at least reached a point where brave military men and women could live the lives they fought so hard to give us all.

It's so unfair that he had to choose either an open life just being himself, or Fame and Fortune acting. I still watch a Perry Mason show occasionally. He was so convincing in the part. I'm glad at least that he had a solid relationship in his private life. I also didn't know what a responsible person he was from his Naval Service to his Philanthropy. An outstanding Human Being that sadly had to hide in an Era that was unaccepting of that one small thing that didn't even define him. Thanks for the video.

@@lucyfisher8347 that seems likely. I grew up during the Ironside series and always thought him gruff, like Orson Wells. I have learned what kind person he was, since his passing. I have a relative that tended the collection and showed it to me once.
Raymond Burr is one of my favorite actors. His goodness always shines through.
There were more than a few silver-screen heart-throbs that batted for the other side back then and yet so many of men (including me) modelled our masculinity around these titans. Gay men are men and some of the best kind of men at that!

@@macwyll Basically the whole 50s culture from the show is cool. Raymond Burr was a smooth as butter and the supporting cast was great. Enjoyed seeing the character continue into the 80s, with updates for the current standards of the time. This is one of my favorite shows of all time (along with Columbo and Rockford) and I never tire of seeing the same episodes over and over again.
He was certainly no slouch. He lived a very pro-active useful life.

Mr. Burr was an amazing talent!!! I had the honor of working on a couple of the made for TV Perry Mason movies filmed in Denver in 1980's. ( late) 1980's, while I was attending Community college of Denver. It was wonderful to watch first hand. All the talented people.
I loved Raymond Burr. It’s such a shame that men and women had to hide their sexuality, I loved his show’s I didn’t care who he slept with, it was none of my business. Even today studio’s try to hide sexual preferences. He was a fantastic person with a long list of acting career, he was great in Rear Window.
Teresa, not just sexuality. some of us have to either be vague or hide our ethnicity. Even in 2021 . i could always related to anyone hiding a part of their genetic identity since I am biracial and usually most people can't tell at all.
He was truly terrifying in Rear Window. I can still see him looking up and realizing that directly across people could see what he did! Scared the crap out of me and I can see him looking up and realizing it in his mind, then…oh NO ..he’s COMING….‼️
Heartbreaking to know that a man who brought joy to my dark violent childhood struggled with not only weight but worse still, hiding his natural orientation.
I find gentle comfort in knowing he lived within a 35 year soulful marriage, sans paperwork. Kept a secret yes, yet obviously strong committed and joyfully wonderful.

One of my great aunts was a big Perry Mason fan, and I got into the show as a kid because of her. Burr was a gifted and prolific actor, and even more importantly, a kind, decent and generous man. He was human, with the same human fears and frailties that we all have. But he gave us much to enjoy and to remember him by, and he certainly left the world a little bit better than he found it.
Raymond burr has million of fans that love him and don't care about his private business.
At least he found someone, so sad he had to hide it.

Back in tbat Era of Hollywood.
I first saw Raymond Burr in his role as reporter Steve Martin in "Godzilla", when I was just a kid. He left an indelible impression on me. When he became Perry Mason, that was even more impressive. Ironside wasn't bad, but by then I was more into the Bionic Woman. Nowadays, I'm rediscovering Perry Mason on METV in NYC, where he's shown every weeknight at eleven and mornings at nine. The only villainous role I saw him in was as the murderous husband in "Rear Window", but that was certainly memorable! I'm sorry he had to live a lie in order to be left in peace by the star makers and gossip mongers, but homosexuality simply wasn't understood very well back then. We're supposed to be more enlightened now, but there's still a great deal of prejudice directed toward LBGTQ people in show business, as well as in other spheres. All I can say is, good night, Mr. Burr, wherever you are, and thanks for all the courtroom drama as Perry Mason, as well as all your other roles.

The American version of Godzilla was my favorite film when I was a kid. I watched it every time it came on T.V. even when it played every night of the week. I was obsessed. Lol.
I met Raymond Burr when I was 12 years old. My family and I were vacationing at Coco Palms, a hotel on the island of Kauai. We met at a party and I whispered to my mother that Mr. Burr looked much younger in person than he did on TV. She told him what I'd said and he smiled at me and said, "Ah! Out of the mouths of babes!" That was 56 years ago and I still remember it vividly.
I am a big fan of Raymond Burr. This is a tastefully done video about his life and career, thank you. The only thing that was missing for me was mention of his work in Radio. I hear Raymond Burr nearly every day when I turn on Classic Radio on Sirius XM. In the 1940's and early 50's he played bad guys or tough cops a lot but then after many years of these other roles, in about 1955 or 1956, he "suddenly" is cast as the star main character of a radio program written and produced by the same folks that had created the super successful Radio version of Gunsmoke. The new show was also a western, a show called Ft. Laramie. And in Ft. Laramie, Burr is so so very good and nuanced and skillful with his words and inflection and pausing and everything the best actors know how to do.
But still this is a nice overview of his life and impact in films and television. He really was extraordinary. If he does not have a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame he should.

Never in a million years would have thought Burr was homosexual. Seeing his pictures as a young man makes me long for my own youth, too! He was gorgeous.

Raymond Burr was a consummate actor, and his work as Perry Mason is still excellent these decades later. That's quite an accomplishment not all actors could claim...
If a full length movie were ever done of his life, a shortened version covering just the interesting points would take at least 6 hours.

My mum and dad loved his program Perry Mason. It was one of the best thing on TV during 50s and 60s. We all sat down to watch it Saturday night. Even us kids.
I remember going to Raymond's house in Hollywood back in the day to party. He was gay and it was known thru-out the gay community. That was in the 70's. It was a crazy time of life. He was a great actor also and very generous.
