- Chitine, Choldrith and Living Webs, it's a grab bag of arachnid horror today as we venture into the upper Underdark and the populous MiddleDark where the Drow and their warped creations contest and murder their way into Lolth's favor.

Very cool! I love these lesser-known creatures that most people rarely encounter.
Purple dragons? Better yet, a half cobra dragon tarrasque. Youre welcome.
Actually they are very well known. You just don't read.
🤷🏾♂️
@@raycharles1982 y so tough? Is it easier over a keyboard then irl?
As I crawl into this ceiling looking f9r a leaking pipe, that happens to be infested with unusually thick webbing, all I can think is, "damn you AJ"
I mean, a few prayers to Lolth couldn't hurt...
By Her grace, I hath emerged unscathed. Praised be the Spider Queen..... It was really bad in there
A Chitine infestation in a local copper mine would be a nightmare. Picking off workers, then unwary towns folk night after night. Leaving the opening of the mine looking normal, only lacing the rest of the entire mine with webs, traps and entrances to giant spider nests.
If those memory webs release a telepathic shockwave on death that implants the memories of any it’s killed in the last 24 hours into the minds of everyone in range, then I’d think the absolute most clear memories would be the most horrifying. The memory of the last moments alive. For the players, this could be extra terrifying if one of their own had died during the fight, as now they have that fallen comrade’s death from both their original and the fallen friend perspectives.
Truly, with enemies like this in the world, any adventurer that makes it to level 20 must be a mentally broken individual.
This person gets it.
Living webs (and particularly memory webs) are an amazing monster! The sheer multitudes of different spider-themed beasts is staggering. I think you could run a campaign with nothing but different arachnid horrors for every encounter, and the players would be high-level before you finally ran out. XD
I do advise you change things up on the regular, otherwise the players get a bit burnt out on a thematic overload.
@@AJPickett good advice, I've seen posts where PCs obviously had enough of their DM's undead shenanigans.
@@AJPickett I would also advise a big discussion about this in session 0... you don't want to start into the spider-theme only to permanently lose players because they are terrified of spiders.
The Drow went "All Tomorrows" with the Chitine.
.....Never go All Tomorrows.
I imagine there’s an old saying of these people in my world.
” if you see some poetry on the wall quickly read through it.
if it’s fairly wholesome go towards that direction, there might be slaves there.
if it’s fairly chaotic turn around that is off-limits there are no slaves there.
And if it’s both fairly chaotic and wholesome turn around and run as fast as you can in the other direction you might become a slave or dinner“
I think dark elves are only useful for pleasing my girlfriend and second breakfast, possibly at the same time.🍳
These were some of the first monsters our current group had to confront. Chased them through city streets, tracked them along sea side cliffs, and charged in to a little outpost. It felt like a good introduction to what can be out there.
I had a homebrew version of a Jorogumo(Japanese spider demon) that had employed chitines and choldriths as her guards for her lair...nice to know I played them out properly but it’s also nice to know I can also expand on them a lot more in the future 😏
Keep on releasing this Dragon gems because I they are fascinating and fun! Thank you AJ!👍
Well, now I have a new plan for the game this weekend. You rock AJ
I like to think that upon the death of a Choldrith, they involuntarily spew a flood of eggs upon the floor, sloshing around the ankles of the heroes with fist sized, opalescent eggs coated in a viscous mucous, and any Chitine within 120ft emit a wailing scream and immediately get their full movement to move towards the eggs with the sole purpose of grabbing one and trying to get away.
I cast fireball
Would love to see a vid on the weresharks
So, is there a finite amount of Choldiths in the Underdark, or are they born just like the chitine are, just less often?
Unknown
When my party started our game, we had to deal with a chitine infestation in a swamp. My fighter almost died in the first encounter. We ended up rendering some fat to use as lighter fluid and burned down the entire nest of chitine and killed any chitine that escaped the flames at lvl 1.
Yep, that's the way to do it.
well another race to add to my list of avoid unless plan to destroy and have the means to do so
The thing I like best about these videos is how they illustrate the monsters in their natural habitat. They aren't mooks that will rush you with no thought and die by the hundreds like trash mobs in a video game, they're cunning predators as smart as a person that have a huge advantage of being able to alter the terrain however they want with their webbing. Of course they would be a nightmare to fight on their home turf.
@@flibbernodgets7018 Also AJ is an awesome storyteller. He made me regret (as a DM of decades) neglect a LOT of monsters he put in his lore because I thought they were stupid and were really not... just were stupid because I didn't put effort into making them into a good story.

Nah. Still calling Lolth.
Aw yeah this is what I needed today. Time to get deeply nerdy.
Astonishing stuff- the cooperation of Underdark species is exceptionally scary stuff!
Well done AJ. The campaign I’m in right now is centered on the Drow. I will send this to my DM to see if he gets any ideas.
Now I lot of people's first reaction would be "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO YOURSELF?!"... heh heh... I, however, like the cut of your cloth adventurer!
@@AJPickett It's simple, I am also a DM for a different group.
You sir have a fellow person who would love to try it while using the race if dm allowed use along side a spiderman build.
Living Webs sound so cool. I can imagine them being domesticated for use as electrical generators, in exchange for food.
As for domesticated Memory Webs, they could be wrapped around the bases of Lolth idols, serving as data storage for important rituals and hymns.
If you're interested, 2 comic book series have been published recently that are also used as RPG games - one is DC's Black Label titled called The Last God & they just put out a comic sized gazetteer that is 5th Edition compatible, the artist is Riccardo Federici, who is amazing, & the comic story is told in 2 parts, the past & the present. I think anyone who likes roleplaying guides would love it. The other is an Image Comics series called Die, written by Kieron Gillen, about a group of friends that play RPG's & one of them comes to them with special dice, they roll them & vanish from the earth for years, having been transported to another world of fantasy & magic. Also a great series & Kieron includes role playing guidelines people can use to play in the world.
Had an arc take place in a drow outpost with a matron mother from MToF. She actually was an optional ally as this outpost was placed specifically to control a rapidly expanding chitin nest. Of course the players nuked everything and I cant really blame them (underdark duh) but man I was hoping to get some of those Lolth style mutations onto any players who took a boon from the spider queen.
Also... reskin your demons for whichever demon princes layer they come from for added fun. The spider balor is to this day one of my favorite homebrew monsters
I shudder at the very thought of a spider Balor haha

What if I open a portal conected to a ACTIVE VOLCANO to the underdark to clean that place?
Because this is what this place seems needing... PURIFICATION BY FIRE.
Good idea agreed but something will still survive deep down where fire shit lives open ice portals down there
Skip the volcano. Go for the center of the plane of fire. Or the surface of the sun if that's more convenient.
If there's some shit that needs to be yeeted entirely into the negative energy plane, it's the Underdark. Send it all there, just the whole thing.
Just when you thought the underdark couldn't get any worse.
That's a phrase I tell myself a lot as I learn about the underdark.
First, you have the best fireplace. Second, Chitine, ugly with a capital UG! Overall very timely, I have a group venturing into the Underdark to find the Ilithid to negotiate for some information. Hard to do when your seen as nothing but their next meal; or worse.
Are demonic crossbreeds just blessings in the eyes of the Drow?
Evidently so.
Considering being chosen to be “blessed” with a half demon child by one of Lolth’s servant demons is an *amazing honor* to Drow priestesses...yep.
Plot hooks:
the illithid have been strangely quiet
The aboleth is missing dead
The illithid fought and killed an aboleth
Reality: the local illithid cabal has captured an aboleth. They plan to feed it to a memory web then kill the web close to a massive collection of slaves. A group of illithids will then feed on the slaves, some will sacrifice themselves to the elder brain and put the remains of the aboleth into the brain pool
Goal: the elder brain will gain all the racial memories of the aboleths as will many of the cabal
Go!
What if the party is funded by a wizard who is mind controlled by the aboleth and trying to get them to free his master.

Great idea!
AJ Pickett thanks! It has it all. Conflict. Mystery. And a potentially cool quest item, all with few moving pieces on my end. Plus if it’s an explosion of memories, they’ll have a little puzzle putting it all together, making the exposition more memorable-give them some ownership. Thanks again. Love your lore as always!!
I think I'd rather deal with the Aranae that the Chitins and the other arachnid creatures
The Underdark is often such an interesting place, as are the people, and things, that live within it!

At least I now know that the Chitine, Choldrith, Chwidencha and Drider are all somehow connected to Lolth; I'm starting to hate her even more now.
I always wondered how to pronounce this. I love the Underdark sourcebook they were featured in.
ah, nothing but the pitter patter of thousands of insectoide feet when fighting, completely silent when overwhelming enemies. I didn't want to sleep anyway 🙃
Some spiders whistle. And many would make much noise if not for their tiny size.
Your presentations are so detailed, I often think that a motion picture could be made with all of the background and cultural information that you present for each species, devil, animal, race, or demon. Thank you for all your hard work!
We need more D&D movies!
@@AJPickett Here in the USA, the Moral Majority (asinine propaganda heavy pseudo-Christian group that once had a LOT of political power) attacked D&D successfully with the movie Mazes & Monsters with the now Hollywood icon Tom Hanks. Their damage is still resonating to this day despite their chain of rational and moral defeats virtually killing them.
The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies have opened up their acceptability and spawned new fans. D&D, AD&D. and most modern fantasy universes were heavily based on Tolkein. The most recent D&D movies were good but virtual flows. Since Tolkien's novels of Middle Earth, AD&D produced far more novels with far better stories. There is a LOT of movie potential there, especially Forgotten Realms, and I pray if they do they don't warp the script to fit a market in them. That has always been corporate positive (better profits now and screw the market later, hope to salvage the market after the stunt via Lucas methods).
It's fine. It's fine. It's fine, really, I never wanted to visit the Underdark anyway. Nope. Never did. Never well. Nope nope nope nope nope nope.

Interesting how the Choldrith look a lot like Lolth's preferred form a spider with a vaguely elven head perhaps that maybe another reason why Lolth seems to love them so much after all Imitation is the greatest form of Flattery. It's really interesting that the Chitine who were made by the Drow seem to genuinely revere and love Lolth and she rewards them for that loyalty whilst the Drow fear her and desperately seek to appease just to survive and she just dismisses them. But then again the only reason she corrupted the Drow was to get back to godhood and piss off her ex Corellon so as far as she is concered they are simply a means to end a tool pets to keep happy even.
Ew, they are like Spider-Man’s mutating man spider form. Definitely see why the “kill it with fire” logic applies here.
Well, Demonic Spider-Elf, technicly.
The underdark is so dangerous! I enjoy the lore of all the denizens who lurk in the meat grinder environment. Thanks for posting
Idea for a fine magical beast, specifically a spider:
Love Spiders.
These are actually from the Mirror Universe where Loth is a Lawful Good Goddess who's rules over such concepts as Community, Communication, & Organization. They are basically normal spiders the size of a tarantula with a heart shaped mark on their back with intelligence equivalent to a dog or dolphin, but allow any of Loth's Priests & Priestesses to communicate with any other worshiper of Loth who possesses one allowing news to travel quickly in their attempts to stay free from the yolk of Corellon Larethian Lawful Evil leader of the Elvish Reich. In addition to the "psychic webbing" they provide they have a mind affecting venom that causes a level of arachnophilia in anyone who is bit by them. If they bite you for the next few days you will be abnormally attracted to, & protective of spiders. Basically I was reflecting on all the Arachnophobia around Loth & thought how weird the idea of having Arachnophilia would be.
Some of these little guys may have crossed through a doorway into your campaign setting, in which they can make an easy way for your party to communicate if you want to include a Mirrorverse plot & even the idea of reversed Gods of that Mirrorverse.
I knew about mirrors of reversal, but a whole universe sounds like a fun idea!
It always bummed me out that spiders are so associated with evil in d&d. Your mirror universe where Lolth is a lawful good goddess is crazy interesting and just what I've been looking for. We need more media where spider are put in a more positive light.
I am definitely saving this for a future encounter
I must admit, I knew very little about chitines prior to this video. Thank you so much for doing this. That was a lot of work. Good job.

@@AJPickett Heh, it's still got that punch!
Wizards of the Coast may be focusing on many aspects to attract new customers, but the fact a race like this persists to 5e shows they've long since given up courting the Arachnophobe population.
That thumbnail took quite a lot of work to avoid serious arachnophobic sight triggers, while still conveying the content was a NOPE for them. My bestie suffers from it so, he's never going to watch this one.

How are living webs unaffected by fire, water, and cold? If anything they would be potentially vulnerable.
They are monsters adapted to those. Think of them as a form of slime or ooze, because they pretty much are. They are electric-centric energy absorption monsters and cold helps electrical things for the most part. As a DM for decades, I create complex immunities in my homebrew because I love the complex beasties and my players love becoming expert monster hunters via detective work. Living Webs, I never even known about them until now, but I already love them. They are perfect intrusive scavenger monsters in monster spider areas.
I subbed for the intro before watching the full video.
How would you feel if there turned out to be entire societies of multiple intelligent monstrous beings living in hidden cities and attacking anyone that ventures too close to their cities.
I know what your answer might be, but I have an unorthodox character... I'm a dragon born, but had my story hold that I have a Half-dragon mother.
Does that work? Can a Half-dragon have kids with a Dragon born to have further hybridized babies? Is my character actually a technical impossibility?
You are correct. Half-dragons are the result of a dragon and a humanoid reproducing. Dragonborn are their own species. If I remember correctly in 5e half-dragons are actually like mules. They can't reproduce at all. That being said every D&D game is its own thing so if you and your DM are cool with it there isn't any reason to not do it.
It would be a dragonborn with sorcerer options 😊
I should have been a sorcerer. I'm a Paladin
I love the underdark a helluva lot, I'd love it if you did an underdark video, there was a sort of underdark focus on your myconid video a while ago, but it was lite

Why does Lolth like Spiders so much?
Because spiders are female dominated. Females use their large size to eat their mate after mating.
Well she was originally a member of the Elven pantheon, and elves have great reverence for nature (despite occasionally almost destroying worlds), including spiders. Dew laden webs in the morning sun are delicate and intricate artwork in silvery sunlight, plus spiders can mimic flowers and look quite stunning on the surface world.

It was called dragon mountain. 8:05 HA! Get wrecked, you spindly little goose-necked nerds!
This is D'vorah's race.
So how do the chitin and their queens feel about driders? Do they see them as food, a threat, or something sacred to Lolth?
As far as I know they just sort of treat them like the red headed step children. That means they could simply eat them or see them as tenuous allies. Any who recognize Lolth and her connection to driders just give them a wide berth... basically the untouchables of drow society because they have failed Lolth before in the past and nobody wants to associate with those who have failed the demon queen of spiders.
Being turned into a Drider is a punishment from Lolth, so the Chitine hate and murder the Driders. They see them as abominations, cursed by their goddess.
Interesting how the spider form given to them by lolth is consider divine favor by the chitin but they consider the spider drider form to be cursed? Hmm
Man, you could create a whole world or ecosystem just based on spider drivied creatures. Hell this video alone would give you a solid basis for it. Hmmm.

As a bonus action flare you cloak before you or out to the side. This fires out all trap thrown weapons. The traped weapons use the casters casting mod to both hit and damage.
Casting the spell as a reaction consumes a level 1 spell slot but casting it as a bonus action will not . the bonus action casting of the spell can only be used after trapping a throw weapon as a reaction.
All means all you can not use the bonus action to attack many times in a row by firing out one trap weapon at a time.

Traps cantrips and range attack spells of lover level. Limit 1 traped spell at a time other then cantrips. Attempting to trap a more then one spell simple has not effect.
