I’m not Catholic but I found myself in the weird position of trying to persuade a Cradle Catholic not to make the drastic decision to dump Catholicism because she was so unnerved and her faith was so shaken by what happened in Singapore. The pope isn’t just upsetting some Catholics, he’s destabilising their faith at a time in history when so many people are desperately looking for some unshakeable, unchangeable truth to hang on to.

Good job, Fr. Brendan on a very difficult issue. I’m a six day a week Mass attendee. I offer the infinite merits of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ to His Heavenly Father at each Mass for various petitions, but always include Francis. Calvary made present at each consecration. I’m leaving the rest to my most tender Father. Popes come and go, but the Church is here ‘till the end of time. If you believe that just one Mass is more powerful than all the prayers of all mankind of all time, then the best way to help the Pope, any Pope is offering Holy Mass for the current successor of Peter. NEVER even think about leaving the barque of Peter. God bless you Fr. Brendan.

The most insightful and charitable discussion of this issue that I’ve heard so far. That’s why I always look forward to your Thursday talks.
In addition to sowing confusion among the lukewarm and giving false hope to progressive Catholics, these “teachings,” inasmuch as they downgrade the Glory and Lights of our Lord Jesus Christ, likely also give delight to His adversaries.

I used to teach in a Catholic HS. I lamented leaving that work but am no glad I did since I am not in a position where I need to be explaining the present teaching coming out of the Holy See. Fr. Brendan, your continual affirmation that Francis is fully Catholic and a loyal son of Church wound up sounding to me like a lot of "whistling past the graveyard."

I don't want to change the church just Myself as the Lord Jesus Christ taught us and his apostles, I was lapsed Catholic for years, I went on reteat, followed twelve step programme for recovery which I've done since 1990 the God of my understanding was always Jesus in the twelve step programme, I delved in Wayne dyer philosophy,Deepak chopra and they never brought true peace only partial, didnt know my faith of origin and now that Im coming to know have found true peace. I pray for the whole church for clarity and truth from all.🙏

If you love the Chair of Peter you should defend it when a pope detracts from it or misleads. Sometimes silence or inaction is very harmful. By now the pattern is clear. We have a rogue pope. "Nice" should not replace Kerygma Evangelism. It need not be "aggressive".

Our Holy Father's comments used to bother me, but now, first of all, I avoid listening to the media commentaries which are so disparaging and I hold fast to the Church in terms of the great gift of the Sacraments and doing what I can for the Church and thanking God for my Catholic faith; taking it one step at a time trying to be what Jesus has asked us to be and letting Him take care of His Church as per His promise. We also have the help of our Blessed Mother. As best we can we need to pray for each other including and especially our Holy Father the Pope that we may all be worthy of Heaven. God bless you Fr Brendan. 🙏🙏🙏

Good, as always, to have your comment on this latest... um... conundrum (?)...
I used to get upset, even demoralised by some of the questionable statements coming from this pontificate. Now, after the initial chill, I remember that we have all we need to follow Christ. We have the Mass, the other sacraments, the Bible and the Catechism.
I pray for the pope and the Church, always assured that Christ knows what He is doing. And as Padre Pio said, we are to pray, hope and not worry. The battle has already been won though we have a great many challenges and obstacles to overcome. Like you, I love the pope as the successor of St Peter, but unlike you, I, perhaps, lack the charity to like him. I don't feel the affection or the awe that I felt for precious popes. He is the pope. I respect his position and, as I already said, I pray for him and it's all I can do.

Fr. Brendan, in discussing this matter, we have no right to judge the Soul of Pope Francis. That is a matter for the most Holy Trinity at his particular judgement.
Likewise, we shouldn't evaluate the current Pontificate: future Popes will do that.
But we can judge the contents of any speech given by the Holy Father.
As a fluent Italian speaker, I concur with the English translation rendered by the cleric with Pope Francis.
“All religions are paths to God".
Thus spoke the Holy Father in Singapore to a group of young people.
When considering any Theological proposition please bear in mind Gal 1:8 " though we, or an angel from heaven, preach a gospel to you besides that which we have preached to you, let him be anathema".
    St. Cyprian of Carthage taught:
"Salus extra Ecclesiam non est ".
Saying that all Religions are a path to God is at least material Heresy.
It makes a mockery of the death of all Martyrs. Under
such logic, the Brave Tyburn Martyrs should have realized they could have been saved in Cranmer's new religion.
Christ said in Matt 16:18 " Thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my CHURCH, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it". N.B.: Christ didn't say my CHURCHES! No diversity of Religion was willed. One Church, one faith etc
Therefore “without a doubt, they will perish forever, unless they hold the Catholic faith whole and inviolate.”
Thus taught Gregory XVI in the encyclical "Mirari Vos", paragraph 13.
If all Religions are a path to God then what was the point of the Crucifixion? And the Institution of the Mass on Maundy Thursday?
The Roman Catholic Church is indefectible. The only way to reconcile this with what the Holy Father said, is to conclude that Material Heresy was committed by him. At least.
The Silence of the Irish Hierarchy on this is deafening. Silence betokens Consent.
Let us pray for the Holy Father and the Irish Bishops.

I am a Singaporean catholic living here in Ireland with my Irish wife and I don't agree with the Pope directives in our faith. Also thank you Fr for sharing how Singapore was formed and how it's ran. Many strong points but also borderline authoritarian to control crime, drugs and minor offences. As said, no country will have the perfect model but that is what works for Singapore. They also don't take in asylum seekers for the very fact that they don't want what's happening in Europe to cause tension with it's citizens in the multi cultural society based on meritocracy. Also corruption and white collar crimes are low due to the big jail time sentences.

The holy Father makes it very difficult to be a Nationalist economically right wing Catholic Conservative, I'm not aware of all of his statements, but I find it difficult to refrain from excusing his ignorance, all the evidence shows that government is the most inefficient most expensive way to provide anyone with anything, regardless of who is running the government, or where in the world the government is, and all the evidence shows that a deregulated competitive free market always rises to meet demand providing everyone with better and better quality products and services at lower and lower prices, not just some of the evidence or a majority but all of it. It's so hard to understand how people can't look at the evidence, or perhaps won't, I wish our church would take an honest approach to the body politic, without the individual freedom to commit sin there's no moral high ground in remaining free from sin, the same principle applies to the freedom to fail or succeed, the freedom to utter whatever statement you want, right or wrong, but the Pontiff should be above some of the rather left wing statements that a lot of us may find morally objectionable. As for the Islam thing, believe what they've written in their holy books, not the words they utter, because their books give them permission to deceive us until they are enough in numbers to dominate by force. Be wary of the demonic operating through Islam. I really need to study the Christian bible after studying Islam, because it's feeling like I know the enemy better than I know myself.

Thanks Father for your opinions. I think this is the first podcast in which I disagree with your views!
I have observed and read what has come emanated from the Vatican since 2013 - and everything tells me that Jorge Bergoglio, isn't and probably never was, fit to be a member of the episcopacy.
The mission of the Church is to convert all souls to the One True Holy Appstolic Catholic faith. The saving of souls.
The mission is clear and unambiguous. Convert and save souls.
The popes role is to iterate and reiterate that mission statement at every turn possible. In that regard the job is easy.
The church has defined dogma and doctrine. There is no need or no requirement to deviate or to second guess what has already been debated, agreed, and ratified.
It seems to me that Jorge Bergoglio seeks at every turn to try to second guess, circumvent, change, what has already been ratified as dogma and doctrine.
We had this for 11 years now.
Too much compelling evidence shows me that he should never have been appointed as an officer in the church. Any institution which appoints those who do not support its objectives runs the serious threat of betrayal by those appointed.
God is testing us for sure.

Jorge's 'teaching style' is EXACTLY what he wants it to be. He is as clear as crystal in his anti-Christian teachings. He raises the hopes of heretics because he is one. BTW; Jorge is also utterly self-satisfied. Yes - Jorge runs towards the prodigal but it's an UNREPENTANT prodigal he embraces without any desire to convert.

Thanks Brendan. I'm most interested in your comments towards the end of the video where you say its an awful place for a priest to be in, and you sort of hate to say anything negative against the Holy Father out of respect, am I correct?
I find this a very very common thread in faithful catholics who don't want to speak bad about the church or Pope even when they KNOW something or someone is wrong. You have in fairness spoke the truth which is commendable.
But for the life of me I cannot understand why people do not see the irony in the atrocious wrongs of the past where many in the church knew of the wrongs but stayed silent for the sake of the church, loyal to the institution but not to Christ. Maybe its extra hard for priests to speak out, having given your life to serve God in the church. Just watching the video and seeing you for want of a better word struggling with trying to be loyal and respectful to the Pope and institution, and yet to be true to the highest calling of all, to Our Lord Jesus Christ. Its the truth that sets us free. We need courageous people to speak up and stand up for the gospel regardless of consequences. We all need to Awake from our slumber! Arise for your sleep, a new day is dawning for all those who weep.
What the Pope said has saddened me so much as i have siblings who believe exactly what the Pope said about all religions leading to God. If they knew he was in agreement with them, they would be delighted.
Thank you. I listen with interest.

On the one hand prudence is required to keep miles from being taken when inches are given. On the other, a fisherman doesn't get much of a catch without casting a wide net. While acknowledging the very real dangers of relativistic interpretation vis-a-vis the former, in this instance I believe his intent was quite plainly the latter.
In a nutshell, I'm not bothered by Our Holy Father's theological imprecision nearly as much as I am by the incessant rush from so many quarters to place his every utterance unto judgment most absolute every time all the time. It's like watching a marathon runner be lambasted for lack of a sprint. Waaaay too many people fancy themselves a Paul to Peter.

  • @jflinn7401

God bless you, Fr. Brendan. I believe that there is very genuine cause for concern in the Holy Father's remarks. As you say, he seemed to claim that it's problematic to portray one religion as being inherently superior to another. To my mind, the most charitable interpretation that can be given to his words is that he didn't say it was problematic to *believe* that one's own religion is superior; he said it can be problematic to *say* it. Ergo, one could try and make the case that the Holy Father's criticism was directed at people who make these kind of statements to non-believers in moments when remaining silent and listening would be preferable. Is that what will be heard, though, by vast swathes of non-Jesuit, non-Catholic, non-Christian peoples? No. His remarks will be seen as an endorsement of syncretism and as a dismissal of the call to evangelize. Furthermore, this latter interpretation would seem to find justification in the Holy Father's use of imagery - multiple paths, multiple languages. From where I'm sitting, the only Catholic interpretation of these analogies would be that non-Christian religions are confused languages and incomplete paths. Can one say that "every religion is a path to arrive at God"? I'm genuinely not sure. To say that a non-Christian religion is a path for *arriving* at God (as opposed to merely reaching out or growing closer to Him) is like saying that a fragile glass saw is a tool for cutting through wood. That may have been its intended purpose, but, if so, it's incapable of fulfilling its end.

I can honestly say our present pope is a bit of an enigma who reaches out in love to the poor and suffering peoples of the world, at the same time at the same time, none of the previous popes have ever, to my knowledge, skated so close to heresy. Pope Francis frequently make comments that cause great distress and confusion to faithful Catholics, many of whom have suffered greatly due to the failings of priests or religious. It's not easy being a priest or religious in Ireland today attempting to explain the nuances of the pope's statements. We cannot, nor should not, return to the pre-Vatican Church but surely the pope is aware of the impact of what he says. It's s sad to see you, Fr. Brendan, so uneasy about commenting on some of the pope's comments in Singapore. Your obvious discomfort mirrors how so many people feel today about commenting on similar issues in the Church and the world today. We must pray that Pope Francis seeks the guidance of the Holy Spirit and listens to the People of God.

If the Pope's mission is to bring souls to Christ, then surely we must first discern whether it is his intention or his method that is questionable. Perhaps, to paraphrase Hanlon's Razor, we should not attribute to Judas that which can be adequately explained by Peter.

Father, I understand your position, as a Catholic priest you are stuck between rock and a hard place. You cannot criticise the pope and cannot question the Christian doctrine either.
But you are far too kind and apologetic. Francis knows very well, what he's doing. This is not his first "error". This man is systematically undermining and hollowing the whole institution from inside.
As a church leader he's supposed to promote Catholic values and act as a spiritual leader and representation of Christ on Earth, bring Salvation to as many people as possible. Especially nowadays when the Catholic church is facing unprecedented decline in the number of believers in Europe and North America. He neglects these duties and instead he lays foundations for one global church in masonic / gnostic sense.
The tactic he is using is called "strategic ambiguity", again, it comes from a marxist toolbox. The key is to confuse and humiliate opponents through use of mildly contradictory and ambiguous statements, which convey a clear message but also offer some degree of deniability or alternative explanation.
Example from recent past: 1. They (💉) are safe and effective. They are the best protection against the disease. 2. You need 2nd, 3rd and 4th booster, otherwise you are not protected. = Implies that they are not effective or offer full protection. But whoever points this contradiction is marked as a conspiracist. And the public is confused, people don't really know what's true and what's not, so they submit to the authorities and believe "the science".
Example: 1.There is no salvation except thorough Jesus Christ. 2. There are many ways to reach God. = although it is technically true, it implies that Jesus really doesn't matter.
    Believers are confused.
Catholic church has been here for over 2000 years and unity and consistency is paramount. For that reason Catholic Church has its doctrine and catechism, to clarify and explain the faith. The doctrine CANNOT be changed, it is the bedrock on which the church rests. Pope CAN be changed.
That's my humble non-expert opinion. I am personally very disappointed by the conduct of the Catholic church and I am looking more and more into Holy Orthodoxy.

One must speak the truth honestly even if it concerns the pope, if the pope makes a fatal mistake. Humans are not free from mistakes, but there needs to be real corrective action, and not just covering it up with wordplay. Maybe the pope needs to meditate alone at the tomb of St. Peter for at least 40 days. Recall why the tomb of the apostle of Jesus is in Rome, and not in Israel. If St. Peter had stated that all religions lead to the same God, he would certainly not be in that tomb in Rome being executed by the Romans.

Sir we are in Singapore . We have multi cultural people here . We Catholic is majority here. Pope has to speak in general . He can’t speak about Jesus in front of prime minister , ministers and other leaders from different religions. Why can’t you relax . Pope Francis is not God . By critiquing him shows you have a trouble heart . He did the good job and we love him. He is full of love. And compassion . His trip was very successful. We are very simple people in Asia . We are very tolerant to each others . We focus on Jesus only . That is why our churches are alive here. Our bishops and priests are very obedient to Pope Francis .
He is also a human being . He can be wrong . But as you critique him on your channel what do you get ? What do you expect the reactions of the people who listen to your channel ?
People who has very weak faith will start doubting , or people want to become Catholic start hating Pope and the church . Think about the consequences. If you just pray for him and do some discernment . It will help you to clear your mind and your heart won’t be troubled. When you talk make sure you lead people to Christ . Think about good things that Pope has done . God bless you

I am a Catholic from neighbouring Malaysia and I agree with MrMercytres. I wish all these online "warriors and defenders" of the faith can cut the Pope some slack. Fr Brendan says he understands the complexities of the political and cultural complexities, but does he really? The Pope is also visiting as a head of State. I returned to my faith 10 years ago (I never left, just stopped attending Holy mass) but I returned because I was inspired by Pope Francis' humility. What he said in Singapore (or Indonesia) did not shake my faith or my belief that Jesus is the Way. This is because I am a Catholic living in this part of the world, and I REALLY understand the complexities of political and cultural mores here. God bless you all, and God bless the Holy Father.

Papa Francisco is firstly an Argentinean, a jesuit who communicates mostly in "español" ; spanish. These are important conclusions. He had also slight difficulties in Ireland in 2018. As a spanish speaker he can easily be misinterpreted. Interpretation of language can be enormously difficult. He has been misquoted in the past and he has clarified his thoughts subsequently.

Heretical statements by Pope Francis doesn't make him a heretic but there are so very many.
Even worse, he hasn't clarified or corrected what was said in Singapore.
And worse again, the statement is clearly what he actually believes which arguably in and of itself makes his position untenable
