In honor of this most important holiday, I would like to share one of the most famous barbershop songs of all time: Lida Rose/Will I Ever Tell You from The Music Man. I am honored to share this song with the incredibly talented Kim Newcomb, baritone of the current Sweet Adelines International Quartet Champions, The Ladies!

Haha, what a coincidence. Three of my friends and I who have hardly any vocal training learned this song this past summer. We mostly did it to randomly surprise our other friends with who wouldn’t expect that level of coordination from us, but we’ve become pretty big fans of the art since then. This comment perfectly epitomizes one of the scenes from the Music Man, the musical in which the inception of this very song lies - The man with the low voice says he can’t sing, another women says the four men hate each other, they harmonize a single chord, and the protagonist says “You’ll never see one of them again without the other three.” The magic of barbershop.
Mr. Waurick - This is fantastic. Second to none, including the first rendition that I ever heard by "The Buffalo Bills" as a child in the 1960s. I learned and sang all the male lyrics when I was 16 in 1974. Back then, this song was lost in time. So glad that you have revived it so well. My hat's off to you and your female partner here.
I listen to this song every morning to start my day on a happy "note".

Barbershop just doesn't get any better than this----it just doesn't.
So excited to be singing Tenor in the quartet for our town's production of Music Man in the fall. My director called me up 2 weeks before making an announcement and said, 'Well...I have a part for you I think you will be excited for. We're doing The Music Man." Immediately I shouted out, "QUARTET!!!" Had our first practice a couple of weeks ago with the quartet and we jelled right away. I am teaching these non-BBS some tags! Ha ha!

I've wanted to be a part of a barbershop quartet ever since I first saw the music man. It's still one of my favorite movies and it's my favorite musical. I still haven't been able to be a part of a quartet, but I love being able to sing along with TimTags.

Some 25 years ago I had the honour of playing Jacey Squires in the Music Man. Our quartet was invited from Montreal to Cornwall, Ontario to sing with their theatre company. We learned everything at home (to the Wilson arrangements, which are a little "different") did one dress rehearsal and 7 nights and never lost pitch once when the orchestra came in with Dream of Now :-) Great job the two of you!

Hey, Tim! You probably don’t remember, but about a year ago I made a comment on your “Be Our Guest” TimTag saying that we were doing Beauty and the Beast and that our director sent us that song. Well, now we’re doing Music Man, and I’m the Bari in the QT! I’m so excited. You have been a huge inspiration to me, and I absolutely adore this interp of Lida Rose. Unfortunately right now I’m strung up with COVID, but I’ve loved listening to all of your songs in the meantime for entertainment. This is awesome.

Love this! I’ve only seen it performed this way in a theater once… Marian with three female townspeople to form a quartet. The women in this musical are underutilized, it’s a great way to give them an extra song! If there’s a movie version that includes this, I’d love to see it :)

I formed a quartet in high school in 1971 trying to get the school to do The Music Man. Fees being exorbitant, we did L'il Abner, but the quartet stuck together through the rest of the school year and performed on just about every concert including gigs in public venues. The first song we learned was Lida Rose. You have brought back a very wonderful memory from 50 years ago! This recording hits it out of the park.

I did an impromptu version of this almost 40 years ago - what memories it brought back. The chapter I sang with has disbanded, and many of the members have joined the Chorus Eternal - my father, and lead of the quartet that sang something vaguely similar. I've had a lot of great memories since then: singing with the Diamond State Chorus in (North)Little Rock, AR; The Singing Buckeyes in Columbus, OH - where I finally made it to International Competition in Indy; and with the Loganairres in Bellefontaine, OH for their final performance before disbanding. To say that each chorus was similar wouldn't be a full truth, only in the fact that all of them LOVED barbershop harmony. I still recall a song every once-in-awhile, and can even muddle through some of the Stage Presence for the song as well. Tim, you and Kim brought me back to a time when I was much younger and was able to withstand the soaring strains of "high tags," singing 11 on a 1 - 10 scale...and still sounding good, and some great memories of quarteting with people who were more than "a person" - we were brothers. I miss them one and all, some more than others - Lamar: I still haven't sang that tag again since I moved away from Diamond State, and won't sing it again until we meet in Heaven. Again, Tim, the two of you brought back a flood of memories, a few tears, and a grin that's would take a mortician a month of Sundays to get off my face. Thanks!
