    Despite all the other shit and drama that goes on and has gone on in the past you are actually one of the only people ive actually seen or heard say how simple it is for the average joe to get in shape, all others do is try and sell you complicated workouts, diet plans or some secret solution that doesn't exist, for that i salute you.

    100% agree! Just got back to the gym a few months ago. Doing full body workouts with a handful of compound exercises 3x per week. Keeping my workouts to no more than 45mins max and have seen huge gains. A few of the guys who work in the gym have commented on what I do and told me that most of the other guys in the gym spend freaking hours doing tons of sets/reps
    of isolations and arent getting anywhere fast. The average gym goer loves to sit on a machine looking at their facebook and other bs social media. Get in, hit it hard and get out fast. Why spend hours a day in the gym when you can get the same if not better results in a fraction of the time

    How did I miss this? Definitely subscribed now.
    I’m a rugby player here in the U.K. and as with many at this level (I still play to a pretty high club level) I work a full time job in addition to rugby. I literally got fed up with having to get to the gym after work in the week because in the pre and in season I also have Tuesday and Thursday evening rugby skills/drills sessions and then of course in the in season we have the game on Saturdays. I wanted to find a way that I could get some decent strength and conditioning 5 days a week in the off season and then on Mondays/Wednesdays during the pre/in season. I went out and bought an Olympic barbell, 500lbs of bumper plates, got my brother who is a scaffolder to knock up a rack for me to squat, press and do dips and pull ups from, I do floor press instead of bench, deadlifts, rows, power cleans and complexes, got myself a huuuge tractor tyre from a local scrapyard to flip, a sledgehammer to smash that tyre with, got a thick rope with a tyre from a pick up attached to one end for pulling over hand and sled pulling, found an old keg from a pub and half filled it with water and used it for clean and pressing and doing carries with, I got a med ball for doing explosive over head rear tosses with, I found two 150lbs kettle bells (68kg) that a guy had been using as door stops 😂, I use those for doing timed holds and farmers carries, I made up a 200lbs sandbag from my old kit bag from when I was still serving as a Royal Marine Commando, basically made loads of 5lbs bags using zip locks backs wrapped in a load of duct tape to stop them splitting so I can adjust the weight. All of those cost me well under £500 (about $700 US) and it has paid itself back twice over in saved memberships.
    Literally it’s just big, dirty and hardcore training on the land attached to my property now and I’m arguably stronger and better conditioned than the other forwards at my rugby club (I play back row, so I’m part of the pack/scrum).
    This doesn’t need to be complicated and even if all I had was the Olympic barbell, bumper plates and tractor tyre, I’d still be able to get quality training in with good results. I’d recommend this style of training to anyone.

    • @tntcheats

      Save the $300-600 and buy some spinlock dumbbells off Craigslist (rest the plates on your leg, not the bar), and buy a 2x4 from HomeDepot. Lie it on the ground for horizontal press, and tie it to a chair for incline. Or roll up some towels and pick a routine that doesn't use incline.
      If you insist on spending money or have been consistent longer than a year go ahead and spend the money.
      But if you hate spinlocks, grab Powerblocks, they're about the same price but expandable and more reliable with a 15-year warranty (unless dropped--so not really worth much I guess). Bowflex have some sort of a flaw in the weight selection mechanism, and tend to break after a year or two.

    Agree here. So many channels also talk about what is "optimal". My goals are simply to be in great shape and look good. I mix cycling, running, GPP (in the form of circuit training), basic barbell exercises and bodyweight like dips and chinups. The structure is a bit random due to my fluid schedule but my stamina is through the roof. I know it means I'm a jack of all trades and master of none but I don't care and the average person shouldn't either. I'm not competing and most don't either. I feel great.

    Over the years I have tried it all. And I have watched thousands of vids on weight training and physical development. And like a compass needle keeps coming back to north, I keep coming back to the things and advice spoken about in this vid. I am 60. I do some big compound moves. Upper body pulls in a variety of directions. Pushes in various directions. Squat variations and deadlift variations for legs. Just basic lifts. I do some brisk walking everyday if I can. And 3 days a week I do some barbell complexes . Without variance I do hang clean, front squat, overhead press, to bent over row. Just keep doing till I feel pretty shot. With at most 40kg on bar (sometimes just 20 on the bar if I feel tired). I stopped drinking beer and if I feel like a drink I have a few shots of spirits. I stopped drinking fruit juices. I started eating more veges. I haven't made too many other dietary changes. I have gone from 115kg down to a current 100kg at 185cm. Muscled for my age. Not shredded. But I look like someone who is strong and fit for an old fart. So Jason, I just want to say that what you say has been my way doing things for sometime now and it works mate.

    Yes, big barbell movements. The best shape I've ever been in was when following Pavel Tsotsoline (?) and his book "Power to the Ppl". Deadlifts and bench. Then back off and go light while working back up and surpassing your last max. I would always hit plateaus and couldn't progress. His program solved that for me.

    I have been watching some Matt Wenning vids and he seems popular right now with his strength seminars and work with the military. He seems to give alot of bad advice like benching and squatting the same day is a terrible idea because you don't want to tear all your muscle down. He recommends a ton of tricep extension work and rotating exercises every week using 40-50 different exercises. Also says you should only workout 50min to hour and 10min because cortisol and testosterone start to all. Using minimal rest between sets with a goal of completely tearing down a muscle on a given workout. whenever someone brings up that they have made great gainz on high frequency full body he just says its because they are not strong yet. He seems to be well spoken and intelligent but contradictory maybe its his westside backround.

    It's crazy how much of a difference eating more protein and fibre makes. If I eat sufficient vegetables to hit my ~30g of fibre a day, and eat chicken eggs and whey shake to hit my protein, I'm struggling to hit 1500 calories.
    Moreover, for every cup of vegetables added, I find I can take out a cup of rice or pasta.

    hey jason can you please talk a little bit about olympic weightlifters and benefits it has for the average gym goer, i have transitioned from bodybuilding to powerlifting to now weightlifting and i feel that improvements in these movements have provided me with the greatest feelings of accomplishments, since olympic lifting primarily deals with barbell movements only, what is your opinion on the benefits this sport can provide for strength and fitness goals?

    • @illusionarytactic
      @illusionarytactic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ah one of the common misconceptions is that during a regular training session all it entails are clean and jerks, snatches and squats, however many olympic lifters program benchpressing, deadlifting, pull ups and a plethora of core movements. although the primary goal is to have the heaviest possible c+j and snatch, of course i want to achieve maximal strength in the squat, bench, overhead press, and deadlift and many competitive oly lifers can put out elite level numbers in the powerlifting movements as well. imo the primary oly lifts provide a great benefit for fitness because it is the ultimate test of strength, speed, and stability while allowing for muscular development and athleticism

    • @illusionarytactic
      @illusionarytactic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you likely researched individuals who have highly competitive endeavours even to perhaps an olympic level, im referring to enthusiasts, of course one can argue that incorporating those movements have no merit to the oly lifts but regardless theyre still fun to do and have physical benefits, one example of an athlete who excels at benching is clarence kennedy, he has an insane deadlift, vertical jump, and can trick, but clearly his passion is of weightlifting. im simply talking about using oly lifting as an outlet for fitness, this does not mean you cant be muscular or be strong in other lifts, one cant be best in all of them but most people dont aspire to be elite level athletes at these movements

    • @MrAckers75

    Sounds like I'm Elite then, 4 hour 15 minute marathon (half off road), sub 2 hour half, 70 mile on/off road cycle ride in 7 hours in 36 degree C heat, over double bodyweight deadlift and well over 1 and a half times body weight bench in the last year ot two.
    Trouble is being a jack of all trades I never win anything, I don't like doing any one thing enough to be dedicated in one area.
    You are right about HITT training being useless for stamina. I'm 40 years old and last time my VO2 max was tested (18 months ago) it was the same as a fit 25 year old.
    I train cycling with a guy in his 60's who is still faster than me and strong as he is an ex powerlifter. Being from a farm and construction background many people I grew up with did manual work after school which soon makes you fit. Now everything is manly machines youngsters these days are soft. I had days I had to work that hard I thought I'd actually died and was living in hell, running a marathon and lifting a few weights is nothing after surviving days of near actual exaustion.
    My boss was brutal and threw someone off the roof who upset him one day, luckily he landed in the sand heap next to the mixer and it was only a 2 storey house and a big heap. Needless to say as a young lad I was scared of him, it made me learn to work hard though. Nobody these days has a clue what workplace bullying even is...

    I disagree about not needing to use dumbbells or cables . More exercises can be done with dumbbells, even though the barbell exercises are excellent, they have their own dumbbell equivalent. However there are exercises that can be best done with bar and those best done with dumbbell and/ or cable. My point is mix it up and have a variety.

    • @JasonBlaha
      @JasonBlaha  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree that exercises which are best done with dumbbells or cables are useful as barbell exercises 99% of the time.

    • @batdude811

      Well I stand by my previous points. Why limit yourself to barbell when dumbbells will do it too. You can train with all types of equipment. Also not to be overlooked is no equipment and train in calisthenics.

    • @ulfdanielsen6009
      @ulfdanielsen6009 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wouldn´t Jason´s point be to keep things as simple as they possibly could be so that adding more stuff and more exercises to the workouts would complicate things unnecessarily?
      I have been physically active all my life doing field sports, martial arts, biking, swimming and going to the gym.
      Now at 54 I have realised that less truly is more.
      Basic compound exercises, a little playtime with Olympic lifting techniques, some flexibility work and some cardio work outside the gym biking and swimming is all I need to still be in great shape.
      I plan for things to stay this way ´till I´m 85.
      Why complicate things when you don´t need to?
      The dumbbell isolation exercises are for bodybuilders and vain young men wearing out the mirrors of the gym.

    • @batdude811
      @batdude811 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hold on there. I understand what you're saying and you make some valid points that I would be inclined to agree with.
      Your equipment of choice makes no difference Your muscles don't know whether you are using dumbbells, barbells or cable. Your training method of choice depends hugely on your goals.
