You doing a good job creating fun comms for the adventurous off grid lifestyles folks will be encountering .

    Your vehicle is one half of a Dipole. As a long haul truck driver I spent over 90% of my time HF mobile. Far more time then most hams, so I was able to experiment a lot. You get a lower take off angle on your signal in the direction of the most metal and a higher angle in the direction of the least amount. When I was hooked to the trailer with my antenna on the right mirror my contacts where longer in the direction of my trailer was pointed and closer to the front. (Signal pattern of an L shaped dipole) When I disconnect from my trailer my distance got shorter. (I used Hustler, Hamsticks, Tarheal , and the ATAS120 antennas) You have a short wheel base Jeep and add fact you have a short whip with a large coil low the the Earth mounted to the side of the Jeep is why you are getting a more NVIS signal. If you tried a longer whip with no coil and a tuner or a tuned Hamstick you would most likely have to tilt the antenna. Other factors that could affect you signal are is the ground dry or wet . Is it raining or has it not rained in weeks/months . Is it sandy, Clay or soil. Are there any metals (i.e. Iron, Copper etc) burred under you. A lot of people That do POTA with a vertical whip(i.e. Chameleon Mil. Whip) find that multiple radials in all directions work better then 1 in one direction. If you mount your antenna dead center of your Jeep you will get less on a high take off angle . If you would like i could give you some simple experiments to test my theory.

    • @m.p.6330
      @m.p.6330 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      WoAD is in Early access, so I don't think it's an apples to apples comparison. Josh KI6NAZ has a video on RadioMail. I don't use apple. But watching his video, RadioMail seems more polished currently. There's also a favorites section for packet servers, which WoAD doesn't have right now. I would suggest watching a few videos on the differences between RadioMail and WoAD. Packet works great with the tnc4.@@PaumanokSupplyCo

    Once again great video...
    I'm using that antenna mounting behind the tire on my wife's jeep.
    We've been using it for about 5 years now with one problem requiring me to replace the cable.
    My recommendation is don't tie the cable to the stock jeep wiring harness. Instead, make a drop loop. Opening and closing the rear door bends the stock wiring harness back and forth being especially hard on the coax...

    A few things,
    1) Icom 705 users never sweat.
    2) Janky is something that has to be resolved genetically. Tolerance can not be accumulated. It's inherited.
    3) You will make soooo many users that actually love the radio you hate, VERY happy!
    Thanks for your effort and accommodations on this popular model.

I doubt I'll be transmitting with the Quansheng much, but I look forward to testing some of the text messaging that's been put into some of the cooked software. That and i wanna see if they've improved their radios like some of the other radio brands. I'm putting together a few presentations, and I still have to cobble together a video with the footage from our failed POTA activation at volcano national park.

    A lot of hams have a surface understanding of how antennas work. Some of us know enough that we feel like it's chaotic magic that follows some rules and you should just try with what you have and see if it works. A very few hams have a deep understanding of how antennas work. "Try it and see" should be the motto for anyone making antennas.

      @TheTechPrepper  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Unfortunately, there is no in between unless you want to try going down the satellite device/phone route. However, you are still dependent on someone else's infrastructure.

      There are no phones involved here. The operator on the other end has a similar setup as myself. This requires an HF transceiver and a computer on both ends. There is no infrastructure here. It's a radio signal that I am shooting out into space

      This system will all be touch-based. The keyboard and terminal will not be required soon.

      @TheTechPrepper I was talking about you dev machine with the big monitor. Once you learn how to use tmux (its easy), you'll love it.

    Are the programs in packages you talk about able to run on an x86 platform?

      Yes, these all run x86.

    In regards to the FZ-M1, which MK generation do you use or prefer? Thank you!

      The Mk2. I have never used an Mk3 as the prices have not dropped yet on the secondary market.

    Genuine question: how much will this matter in a true SHTF situation? How many people have enough equipment to make this worthwhile? What will they provide to you and vice versa. I mean, I'm imagining "Hey, things suck here." "Yeah, things suck here too." Minus mass adoption, so what? What am I missing?

    Love this but serious question. Why not wait a few more months until txt via satellite using your normal phone?

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's relies on infrastructure that I don't control. The satellites are controlled by some other third-party. Don't get me wrong, I use the Garmin InReach Mini in the field, too. It's nice to have multiple modes of communication. Great question.

      Yes. Redundancy. I think multiple options as well. If one goes down there are backups. @@TheTechPrepper

    Nice. I have an FT-897D. I see yours lacks the D. Just means 60 meter is lacking I think.

      I picked this up from a hamfest last year for a great price. The box says FT-857D. I have 60m capabilities. It's one of my favorite NVIS bands. Sadly, I think that we are going to lose 60m as amateurs.

    I really like your channel. I’m an outdoorsman first and ham radio is a tool. But, please don’t try to be like notarubiconbutthole and start a derogatory term like “hamsters”.

      I had a rough go with the hams my first two years on the air. I need to get over it and drop the hamster tagline as I have run into mostly good hams the last 4 years.
