    It's funny looking at new comments on this 2015 video. This video was made when Casey had around 400k+ subscribers and about a month after he started daily vlogging. Bigger vloggers with a few million subscribers started stealing his style. Kids don't get it today pretty much every key elements you see in vlogs today wasn't happening in vlogs until Casey. The Time laspes, setup shots like in a film, montage shots, the music editing. Casey was really the first to use DSLR in vlogging. Vlogging before Casey was basically small cameras like Canon Powershots and the vlogs were basically shot in like selfie formats. Casey brought his film making skills into TH-cam vlogging and change the genre forever.

      In a way it's stealing but I'd also like to think about it as being "development" in the vlogging scene. It took an professional movie maker (Casey Neistat) to get the ball rolling and because of him, others had to catch up. But agreed, Casey was way ahead of his time and basically a wave maker in the industry.

    theres something about caseys vlogs thats so interesting, that they almost feel like they are a minute long. I used to love Ben Brown videos but now i find myself fast forwarding through them often. Casey why are yours so interesting even if nothing happens..

      beiko the different camera angles are part of the reason id say. its much more interesting than someones face right up in the camera for the whole video. and there actually seems to be a point to each of his videos, not just showing stuff that happened throughout the day

      Basically, Jack used Casey's videos as heavy inspiration: "a film for ella" and "a surprise in south africa" are similar. Also around the period Casey started vlogging/started a new company, Jack did the same. It was basically confirmed when Casey commented on Jack's videos.

      +Christopher Short but now Casey and Jacksgap are friends, as shown by Casey's comments of immense approval on a couple of Jacksgap's recent videos. I can safely say that they're on good terms now lol

  • @LouFoulkes
    @LouFoulkes 9 ปีที่แล้ว +231

    Your thoughts on originality are interesting, Casey. Were you talking about your vlogging format? If so, is it really "theft" or "ripping you off" if someone talks to a camera, films their day and includes some gorgeous time lapses? To what degree do you feel like you should be "credited" when someone makes a video similar in style to this one, for example? I think in any artistic pursuit, one's own original style is a big manifestation of every bit of conscious or sub-conscious inspiration you've ever had.
    I could understand your frustration if someone had literally lifted your content, or copied one of your vlogs or videos from start to finish (which would be SUPER weird), but can you really call it theft if someone uses the same or a similar format?
    After all, this is TH-cam, how many possible variations can there be of what is fundamentally "talking to a camera and posting it online"?
    Anyway, I presume you were most probably talking about some corporate whore ripping off one of your commercials, great work as always, Casey.

    • @inepthabit
      @inepthabit 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      ***** It's more than the style, it's also the content. He's talking about Jacksgap. Who suddenly started doing a daily vlog this week covering the start of his company. He has also copied other videos, like the surprise visit girlfriend video. Or the jack knife hack video. Now I do think Jack means well, Casey is obviously a big inspiration to him. But he takes it too far with copying him. Unfortunately though this is a big issue on youtube in general.

      I like how everyone's saying: "Just bc one person does something first, doesn't mean someone else can't do it too". It has nothing to do with who did it first or what content is shown in the videos. It's how the content is being shown to the viewers and the story being told. You can tell instantly whether it's a Casey Neistat movie from any other videos or movies. It's like cooking, when you have the basic recipe like everyone else does. It's now up to you to add your special ingredients into it, to make it your own. You don't copy someone else's special ingredients, then say you came up with it. That's ripping someone else off bc you couldn't think of anything better.

    I really think that no one can truly be original, it is a goal, never a reality. Originality is what we are supposed to aim at, but because it is impossible to achieve, it never becomes a reality. We can never fully create something that hasn't been created or thought before, even if it wasn't fully created or thought the way you pictured it.

    When you've got one person and one camera there's only so many ways to show your day. If you're so easy to copy, then maybe it wasn't so original to begin with. Looking at the camera and filming style is only sizzle, the steak is the concepts and you can't copy those very easily. Heart and soul will always win out in the end anyway.

    If this IS about JacksGap which most of you are already assuming, I can definitely see it! Yes, he did make a video about visiting his girlfriend and the knife jack just like casey and he did mention it was inspired by him but I don't think it's the videos that bother me. It's more like oh look casey has a 4x4, I'll get one. Casey rides a bike to a studio, maybe I'll ride a bike to a studio. Look at Casey's wavy locks, you know what I'll do that too.
    But at the end of the day, I'll watch both of their videos, mainly Casey's I spend far too much of my time rewatching his work!

      ***** I totally get where you're coming from, but I think some people are taking it a bit too far. I have curly hair and I like riding my bike, does that mean I'm ripping off Casey? Let's maybe try and stick to more profound criticism.

    • @iamvictorawr
      @iamvictorawr 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Momo I agree, of course some people are taking it too far, some people think that by criticising others others it makes themselves feel better because they have nothing else better to do. I even stated on Jacks second Good Collection that everyone, even myself, should stop with the negative comments because I'm sure Casey never intended to cause this, plus imagine how Jack feels!

      & yes, don't forget that Casey mentioned in that video "Its get really frustrated when they stolen by people that have big followings, & lot of their following don't know that this work is stolen, certainly there's no credit, & its painful" & we all know that JacksGap have 4 million followers, so i rest my case!

    • @inepthabit
      @inepthabit 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      PHOTOTRISTAN Not really though, because stylistically Casey isn't doing that much different than he did before, he's just making more frequent videos. In fact, if you ask Ben Brown and funforlouis they'll say they were inspired by him. And it isn't just about daily vlogging. Jacksgap also copied the surprise his girlfriend video, and the jack knife video. And now coincidentally starting a vlog about documenting the start of his new company, when Casey is doing just that. On top of all the stylistic similarities.

    There are two types of people in this world. One is the one who has the gift to do a job and the other person is the one who does not have the gift to do a job but wants to do it. I think Casey Neistat has a special gift for getting great shots of the cities he visits, but that takes effort and dedication to achieve this.
    I feel very bad with those who copy up the type of lyrics at the beginning of your videos on youtube and even the music. It is sad lack of creativad there today. I congratulate you Casey Neistat for being so original and I simply know that you are yourself without deceiving anyone. Your videos are the best I've seen in terms of photography and your combination of stable shots with unstable make it more interesting. I hope someday to meet you, maybe life will allow it.

    I'm curious what Casey would consider to be uniquely his idea. If he considers someone filming themselves riding around on a skateboard, and doing fast cuts, and mixing in some drone footage, then I think he's lost his mind. I really, really like Casey, and I thoroughly enjoy his blogs. He is interesting, and I get 10 minutes of enjoyment seeing what he puts together. But no part of it, to me, is something uniquely styled. Everything that he does, has been done before. So for him to say that people are stealing from him, is a joke. He should watch the documentary "Everything is a remix". What Casey needs to realize is that everything he does, is a "stolen" from people before him, and everything that comes after him will be "stolen" from him (and his peers). He should be happy that he is popular enough to be "stolen" from. You're awesome Casey. You make interesting videos. And you have talent. But don't for a second think that no one before you has done what you're doing. Or that no one after you will do the same.

      Peter R -- I think he is referring to the little pieces like when he runs upto the carers and tells you what time it is what's going on so little Aesthetics like that make a difference the filming that's all been done before but it's the way Casey tells stories and approaches the camera, places he outs the camera.

    Another fantastic video from CaseyNeistat as usual. But he can't really claim this style of vlogging, if thats what he's referring to. I had never heard or watched Casey Neistat 6 months ago when I was making my Germany vlogs, and our use of "Title, Video with music playing, vlog, etc. then Ending titles" is the natural way you want to make a vlog and very similar. Ricky Stafford You're so far off base it hurts. Casey's lifestyle has nothing to do with his wife. He is worth more than a million dollars from his own work. He has taken more risks than you will probably take in your lifetime.
      His entire career has been one risk after another. He's been married for what, a year?
      You really think he depends on his wife's parents for financial support? You really have no fucking clue what the fuck what you're talking about.

    I find it funny how the whole atmosphere of the comment section has changed since this was first uploaded. First all the negativity was directed towards Jacksgap as at the time this was uploaded Jack had setup a company and started vlogging it.This video was released and Jack then stopped vlogging. Ever since then Jacksgap has been constantly criticised for copying Casey. Fast forward about a year and commenters seem to be attacking not just one youtube channel but a whole array of youtube channels. Sawyer Hartman, Marzbarvlogs and probably way more if I was bothered to scroll all the way down. It just shows the impact and influence Casey has had on the vlogging game as a whole and how he changed the style of the genre so much that many other you tubers feel the need to copy his style.

    dude so many people copy your style, its insane, I keep seeing these new vlogs who copy your shit like scene for scene, as a mixing engineer for music I stand behind being original 100 percent and find the only way you find your own style is after 6-7 years of doing it every single day, eventually people notice your work, and hire you.

    I understand your point of view, but there is a good quote: "If you think you are original, you are ignorant if you think no one had this idea before and lazy cause you have not done enough research". But I totally agree with you on the actual rip-off side.

  • @jadduck
    @jadduck 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Most of the people commenting on this video are so naive and stupid.
    Jacksgap DIDN'T "steal" or "rip off" Casey's style, because it's not even his style.
    Using a first-person perspective in a video isn't copying anybody's style... it's using a filming style that's been used for generations.
    Using fonts which are *free to the publc* is not stealing anything.
    For fuck sake, using similar cuts as Casey? People *really* need to take their own heads out of their arses and stop penalising people for this apparent "plagiarism".

    Hey! Try to be more like Henry Ford. Did other people copy his assembly line? Yes, There is nothing original about taking video and talking to the camera. I enjoy your videos but it is not Nobel Prize stuff. Be realistic.

    I have been attempting to vlog on a frequent basis but I have been doing what I call a series of "practice vlogs" that you can watch on my page. The reason I call them that is, well, because they are practice haha it helps me out by allowing me to find my own rhythm and style and once I feel that I have found those, then I will officially start vlogging daily. Since I know I am borrowing a lot from already established vloggers, I am simply calling them practice. But yeah everyone borrows ideas from others.

    Sometimes I spend my time creating music. And I get told / realize that some of my work sounds a lot like music of famous musicians I listen to and that annoys the hell out of me. Exactly what Casey said in this vlog, I constantly have to be checking if my work resembles the work of others that is present in my subconscious. If it does I delete the work immediately. It just sucks to think that you've created something awesome to realize after that its a rip off >.

    MarzBarVlogs -> Here is one great example of what Casey means. This kid uses eeeeverything Casey does... thank God he hasn't found a way to copy the timelapses... its so hilarious... He goes... also to a loft office... which nevermind... you will get it when you see it.... Tears apart his "mail time boxes", has a Q&A... its like a UK Casey Neistat (kid version) ... Check him out...

      Samuel molinari I am saying the way he shoots his vlogs are copied from Casey! Just go back and see when he did this change and you will understand

    • @samuelmolinari8178
      @samuelmolinari8178 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea ok I see. But that doesn't mean he's completely copying Casey. Marzbar does have some originality to his vlogs, and sure he has a loft office, but it isn't necessarily his fault that he has one. For all we could know it was the only one available. And also the things like the drone Casey uses Marzbar had been including in his videos much much longer. And back to the loft office he is currently building and adding to it. And other than being in a similar setting the offices don't really have any similarities.
      But other than that I do see your point. The guy does have some similar stuff in his vlogs compared to Casey's. Whether or not they're completely being ripped off by this guy? Probably not true.

    • @samuelmolinari8178
      @samuelmolinari8178 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      And I just wanna say before anyone gets a wrong idea. These, "debates" I guess you could call them, are just for fun. My intent is not to infuriate anyone but to either prove a point, make a statement, or (in this case) stand up for something or someone whom I feel is being wrongly accused.
      But you (and anyone else) are prone to their opinions. Even my side of this conversation is my own opinion. Taken to a court of law either sides could be wrong. This whole thing is just a statement of opinions and not meant to cause strife. So again not trying to pull strings and start a fight. This is all meant for fun and not harm.
      Finally (yes I ramble on) I would like to say I am sincerely sorry if i hurt anyone's feelings and/or caused annoyance, anger, and anything of that matter.
      -Samuel Molinari

      +pamela vilela if you go back and looks at for example BfvsGf videos before Casey did his, you'll see theirs were just clips thrown together. After Casey started his 1st vlog in March 2015, you can see the way BFvGF started to change the way they edited and how it is very "similar" to Casey. Specifically:
      Casey posted his first Vlog on March 26, 2015.
      BFvGF posted a Vlog "Crazy In Love" on April 11, 2015. This video looks exactly like how Casey edits.
      If you go back to any video before than, none of them have that style of edit. The video before has a bit of sampling of that edit, but not one before March 26th has that kind of sequencing.

      I am not implying that a mom should not wear that kind of clothes...its fine if they do it in the house, with family, friends etc....but once you are in public a little bit of decency is expected, there is no reason to make it such a big deal, it just shows frivolity on the part of a mom.....not that i am saying it is slutty or something.
