I've used a squall 200 on both the Battalion II and Squadron rods for the last two years, and I love it. It's my go-to inshore top water setup, and I just picked up a lighter action Battalion II to use with swimbaits. I have landed slot reds, and +20" trout, rock, and flounder with it. Feels so much better than the Okuma/Duckett setup I used before. Highly recommend this setup, and of course, the Fathom series is just going to be that much smoother and stronger.

I purchased the 400 low speed on vacation in Florida Saturday and we fished with two evenings and landed twelve sharks with it, it casts butter smooth and the drag is butter smooth, it’s pared with the shimano scimitar seven foot medium heavy fast action.
The 400 is one of our favorites for sure.
The fathom 400 is perfect for the islands and paddy hopping. It can go from bass to tuna and yellows no problem. Already got a 20lb yellowtail on it. The Freespool is perfect for bait, the drag is smooth, I would reccomend it to anyone. I just wish penn would make more of their reels in US.

It's been 2 years how do you like your Penn Phantom 400
Hello...back on here again. The low speeds are gold colored. The high speeds are red colored. So my rant....... The Fathom low profiles are not designed for salt water. If so they would have stainless steel metal drag washers and the HT-100's come slightly greased. So got back out to do some surf fishing with my Fathom300HS low profile. Iv'e switched up to a Fenwick Elite medium fast. Throwing a popping cork with 3/4ounce under it. I have no problem casting this at all now. I guess for a $300 bait casting fishing reel I thought the Fathom low profile line of reels would be sealed up better then they are. I only go out to the second sand bar which is usually between my knee's and waist. Sure the reel has been splashed on by some waves slapping off of me. I have always low pressure freshwater rinsed my stuff as soon as I got home from fishing. After drying outside I bring my rod/reels inside to store in climate controlled conditions. Well. While out on a Saturday when I first got in to the surf. I pulled on my line to check the drag. Line wouldn't budge even after loosening the drag all the way up. Had to get my pliers and wrap it a few times with line and then pull till it broke free. The drag just seemed sticky after. Took it in to s great fish/reel repair local shop owned by a guy I went to school with... Serious Tackle, in La Marque, TX. Picked it up a week later. My metal drag washers were all surface rusted and rust had also contaminated the HT-100's. Shop had to replace everything in the drag assembly and Cal Grease the washers lightly for a total of $90. Guy says bait casting reels are not sealed up very well at all and see there is a drain hole here at the bottom of the reel below the drag. PENN SHOULD SAY IN THIS VIDEO THEN...THE LOW PROFILE LINE IS DESIGNED TO BE FISHED "OUT OF A BOAT ONLY" ON FRESH OR SALTWATER OR ONLY IN THE SURF WHERE THE BEACH IS LIKE GLASS, SO MUCH YOU COULD SKIM STONES OFF THE TOP. THE ONLY SALTWATER ALLOWED TO TOUCH THE REEL IS THE WATER SPRAYING OFF THE LINE AS YOU REEL IT IN. So now....This nice set up I have will have to sit in the corner till one year I can buy a boat it seems. What a waste. Way to make me have to buy a different rod n reel setup for surf fishing with artificial or a cork Penn. I will now have to mount this 300 on a med/hvy setup to target larger fish off the beachfront from a boat and buy a smaller 200 setup for bay fishing only out of a boat and a 2500-3500 setup for the surf in an IPX6-IPX8 rating. Maybe that's your whole idea of getting more business huh, by leaving out some details on your product lines?

Just got the fathom 300 LH spooled with #40 yellow power pro. Got 175 yards. Paired it up with a teramar inshore 7’11”. Can’t wait to take it out on Tuesday for some rock fishing to test it out. This along with my 3 fathom conventionals have me completely covered now. Thanks for all the purchase recommendations. 😂

Do you like the 40#? I’m in NJ and got the same exact reel but unsure about line. I was thinking 30# PP with some mono backing. Did you do mono backing on yours, or straight 175yd of 40?
@@thomas_2565 the shop I went to didn’t have yellow in 30. I have had zero issues and have pulled in a 4ft shark off the pier in SD. Honestly a short sea bass fought more on a trip I went on. I would go with #30, any backing on the reel is your preference. I don’t have a backing on any of my reels. Lol keeping the shops in business.
Minor update regarding line capacity, which will make the 400-size an even better choice should you hook up to something bigger than expected: The PENN catalogue states the 400's capacity is 200/50 braid. Using 50-pound Berkley Pro-Spec solid braid, it easily holds 280/50- an additional 40-percent more line!

I would love to have some of those fathom low profiles for fishing shallow sand bass and kelp forest calicos around La Jolla and around here locally in LB for cuda

Just getting into saltwater fishing, I’m looking for for an all around workhorse for so cal. I plan on fishing off Newport harbor jetty, and occasionally off a friends boat around Catalina. Targeting anything from calico bass up to 50lb tuna. would you recommend a Fathom FTHII25NSD on a 7’ carnage II 30-80lb rod? Or one of these Fathom low profile FTH400 on the prevail II rod? Or something else completely
Fathom 25 and Carnage 30-80# is what you want. Super Versatile.
Hi Ali! Since you tested them out- what are your thoughts on the high speed vs low speed 400? I am looking to use this out in San Diego as well.
Have them both and I find myself using the high speed set up the most.
I wonder if this would work for east coast surf casting on a 12 foot rod. Currently using Penn Squall 15 SD making 80-100 yard casts for pompano, whiting etc. throwing pompano rig with 3-4 oz sinker.
I'm sure it would work for up to 4 - 6 oz. Give it a try and report back!
Thank you for this video; it was exactly what I was looking for, in seeing the comparative size of the reels, and suggestions for for rod pairings.
On that note, I already have a Penn rod that is looking for a reel to pair, and I'm focused on the Fathom LP LH. The rod is a Penn Legion LEGIN1017C70. 7 ' xtra fast action. 10-30# braid. Do you think the Fathom 400 size is too large to match? Setup will be primarily fished for inshore gulf species (trout, redfish, flounder), but jetty trips and nearshore outings could see Crevalle Jack, snapper, etc.
I don’t know much about penn products but I would say most 10-30 lb sticks would pair well with the 300. Note I have the lexa’s and I’m not sure if they are exactly the same size but I’m general the 300 should work for your use
I have the same action/line rating in the "Prevail" rod series, and the 400 is a bit large for it. The 300 size would probably be more appropriate.

Will the 400 size reel would be suitable for a 10' battalion rod? mainly for throwing big swimbait or spoons on the jetties

If it has bigger guides it's spin. Smaller guides are for conventional casting rods.
hey im a newish fisherman and getting a boat soon im in south carolina and im wondering if you can do a viedo or let me know how to find fishing spots/ find where the are at?
Hey Ruslan, We will do some videos on locating structure and how to fish later this year. Until then get a good chart from your tackle shop that will have the basic spots. Learn what the these spots look like on your electronics and start searching as you travel, troll and fish for similar spots in similar depths. Learn to identify hard bottom on your sounder and always keep an eye out for hard bottom as you travel. Also, lobster buoys are almost always on hard bottom. Meter around then and mark the spots on your GPS. Good luck.

Hello hope it's not to late for a question in the comment section. Could use some advice. Grew up in Galveston, Texas. Offshore fishing a few miles out i caught blacktip's, taggable bull red's, Crevalle, King, etc. l used a Penn 330GTI spooled with 40lb mono mounted on a Castaway Tarpon Tamer but eventually sold the rod. This was back in the early 90's. I still have the reel in great shape and i was gonna set it up again for offshore with a new rod but run 65lb braid in it this time. I recently purchased a Penn Fathom 300 and 400 high speed. The 400 was going to be for surf fishing/pier fishing with 1-2 ounce pyramid weight's fishing for whatever will hit bigger cut bait. The 400 is on a 7'6" Okuma rod rated for 20-40lb line. I had no problem flinging it in the surf. My 300 series i mounted on a med light Falcon Clearwater 6'6"rod. My thinking was for inshore fishing/bay fishing with popping cork's or jig's or dead bait on small speck's, red's, croaker's to whiting. I am running 20lb braid on the 300. I had all kind's of problem's casting my light stuff with it. Doesn't matter how much i tried adjusting the spool tension or cast control. Iv'e probably cut half my new line out. So i guess i'm "one of those" with back lash problem's throwing a 1/4 to 3/8 ounce..lol :-) What do i do with the 300 series and how should i set it up in your opinion?? I'm thinking of moving the 400 for offshore only with the 330GTI and using the 300 for surf fishing. Maybe the 300 is too much for light stuff and i should have bought a 200 series?? Does my 330GTI old school compare to the 400 series Fathom except that the 330GTI hold's more line for offshore fishing?? At now 54...with a big gap in between my going fishing i'm feeling kinds lost..lol Thank's
I have both the 300 and 400, I regularly throw 2/5oz.
My recommendation? Toggle the internal breaking to Max, adjust breaking to where it barely falls, and just keep throwing until you can comfortably keep lowering the tension
My other recommendation, run no less than 30lb braid, and be sure you keep it tight as you're spooling (your arm should hurt after... Well, mine always does)
The one thing that I think would make a big impact on your casting is the braid size you are running. WE use 65# on the 400's and 50# on the 300s. This heavier line will come off the spool smoother and provide a lot less backlashes. The other thing is just practice. Cast a weight similar to your lure in the backyard or off a dock and just really get a feel for the spool speed with your thumb. best of luck.
@@LocalKnowledge Thank you thank you. Actually i went into a local fishing shop and did some talking about my issue. Purchased a Penn SquadronIII in Medium power, fast action. Put on a popping cork setup that has a 1/2 ounce egg on it. Went back home to the big yard. No problem's lobbing in and side arming. Started adjusting the tension's here and there but i got it down now. Guy told me i didn't have enough rod(med light) for the Fathom300 inshore popping setup. At least the $55 Penn seemed to make a difference to me. May go better quality later. Appreciate your comment back. Thanks.

I never understood why so many SoCal dudes are adverse to level winds. I love them... especially fishing in the weeds for bass etc. Might be related to that "we fish like men out here" that Rush is often catching. 😉
We agree. They are great for a ton of applications, not just inshore.

The Penn fishing site SUCKS, it's pictures with no specs. To get line capacity I embarked on a journey thru Ebay, big box stores, Amazon, the technical data is guarded like the Coco Cola formula.

Depends on what you want to do with hit. WE like a 8' trigger style rod rated at 30# or so.

just spool up with 65 lb braid and use a leader of choice 20lb floro - 60lb floro depending on ur situation
@@dmthompson44 that would work exclusively for calico bass as a kelp cutter rig but if you're looking for capacity especially on the 200 and 300 size reels 65lb is probably a bad choice. Depends on what you are using the reel for.
@@Sexyduffman420 ya the 200 size you could probably run a smaller braid size or even run straight flouro or line of choice on but the 300 size can still take a solid amount of 65 lb braid

The SXJ is a "lever-drag conventional" reel, definitely apples vs. oranges to the Low-Profiles in this video. The most comparable model to the SXJ is the Fathom FTH10XNLD, about $209 retail.

This reel is meant for salt water. They have been holding up great.
Took a proven platform, and then upgraded materials, coatings, and in particular the drags, for saltwater.
I do like penn but since they started building their reels in China I stopped buying their reels I would rather go with shimano seigler or van staal
All 18 models of the pictured "Low-Profile" series are made in Korea. PENN's current "Made in USA" reel lineup includes: all International VI lever drags, all Torque lever drags, all U.S. Senator star drags, all "Z" series spinning reels, 12/0 & 14/0 regular Senators, and all Torque II spinning reels.
Should add, Van Staal is made in China.
