    Hey Greg. Thank you for taking the time to put all of these videos and articles together for us.
    If you had to pick your top 5 favorite citrus and avocado varieties (in order) what would they be.
    Backyard is limited to what I can grow so your input would be very much appreciated 😊.

    Thanks for sharing. Not that many TH-cam videos on this variety.

    Greg thanks for making a video on the Jan Boyce. I have a young tree planted in April of 2020 and so far it’s set a few cukes. There are flowers on the tree now so I’m hoping for a few fruit next year if the bees do their job.

    I think Jan Boyce avocados are getting mixed in with the Hass or Hasslike avocados at Costco. I've gotten several avocados that look exactly like the ones you reviewed, including the tiny comical seed. I like it when I get those because there's so much fruit. I feel like I'm getting two for the price of one. I have to say though, I still prefer the taste of Hass.

    Wondering if Brokaw offers JB as part of a bulk buy.

    thanks for the video greg, it sounds like this variety is one of your favorites. A year later, is this still the case? What would you say is your favorite variety? Cheers.

      Jan Boyce is good in many ways but not quite in my top tier for growing. The fruit is mostly great; really only the skin is imperfect, as it doesn't peel well and gets blotchy and bruised often. The tree is good for mild summer climates close to the coast, but it is not suited for hot inland climates. Branches and fruit are vulnerable to sunburn, as the tree architecture is open. I'm inland so this is why Jan Boyce is not great for me. But it can be a very good tree for coastal locations although even there it wouldn't be my first choice.

    Hi Greg: Thank you for the review. I have been unsuccessful in my search for such a video, so yours was very helpful. I have wanted to buy a JB for some time now, but haven't found any for sale. Might you have any idea what nursery or grower might carry them here in SoCal?

      Epicenter nursury .
      A nice lady named ellen is the contact there

      I agree with Omar. Your best bet for finding a Jan Boyce tree as of today is from Epicenter (they are up near Santa Cruz, but can ship to So. Calif.): www.epicenteravocados.com/

      @@gregalderdotcom That is where I purchased my JB and they also sell scions if you are open to grafting.

    Great work Greg. I've not had a chance to try a JB avocado yet. How does JB taste compare to Fuerte? What avocado is similar to the taste of JB?
    I planted a small tree about two months ago and I recently grafted JB to one of my other trees so hopefully in a couple of years I'll have some fruit.
    Do you have Jan Boyce tree? Have you considered a tree profile of JB? It seems to be a vigorous grower.

      @gregalderdotcom  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, Sam. The quality of the taste of JB and Fuerte are similar. I do grow JB and I am putting together a profile of the JB tree and should get it out in a couple weeks.

    Great video! would you please do a taste review video of John Herd avocado and Ardith avocado. Thank You!

    • @gregalderdotcom
      @gregalderdotcom  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great idea! I will profile those varieties when the season is right. I have enough experience with Ardith to do it confidently this year, but I'll probably wait a year or two on John Herd because I haven't eaten enough of those yet.

    I find the inability to peel Jan Boyce to be super annoying. I don't know if I find its flavor good enough to overcome that annoyance. I guess that's an important trait for me. 😉

      @ocnealocneal6549 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that comment, especially that you find that the superior taste still might not be enough to overcome the difficult peeling of the skin.

      My mother-in-law enjoys eating them with the skin 🥑

    • @gregalderdotcom
      @gregalderdotcom  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The skin of Jan Boyce is its major flaw, for sure. I don't actually mind not being able to peel it. For me, it's annoying that I can't quickly spoon it out since I have to be careful not to tear the skin. Of course, JB shares this flaw with many other good varieties such as Fuerte.

    Next a profile of the tree?..my 3-4 year old is leggy, not as prolific as others at thus age,, and does it alternate? Thx for all the great videos.

    • @gregalderdotcom
      @gregalderdotcom  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Profile of the tree is coming up, Frank. Yes, the tree is leggy, but in my observations it is moderately precocious and does not alternate badly although it doesn't produce as much overall as Hass and some other varieties.

    Excellent profiles , only thing I would add is list cold tolerance for growers in northern cal in marginal climates.

    When I got a Kona Sharwil Avocado tree I was like, all I need now is a Jan Boyce

  • @moj8945

    If you were planting an avocado tree between Ardith or Jan Boyce which one would you plant?

    • @gregalderdotcom
      @gregalderdotcom  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't give a good answer for that one, sorry. Even though I grow both and have seen others' trees, I'm lacking enough experience with Ardith to give it a proper judgment.
