Wrong. This is simply the most efficient way to score. Also defending 5 guys on the perimeter is extremely difficult. Means more open shots for players compared to 8 guys standing in the paint while one has the ball and tries to score. So most points and easiest shots equals best offense ever in NBA history. Thats what we have today. And thats why so many players shoot so many 3's.
@@Smido83 If they just ran layup drills for 4 quarters they'd score 300 pts each...but I wouldn't call it "best offense ever". One thing it surely ISN'T, and that's "more entertaining".
@@howardbierley1581 Dont just look at this one sequence of one game. Overall the ORtg in the league is higher then anytime before. The Lakers have an ORtg of 116 this season. During the Shaq/kobe 3 peat their ORtg was never even at 110. And they were Top5 in ORtg every year!
@@Trollificusv2 I can agree that it is somewhat less entertaining. Then you can watch the WNBA, except the Fever. Cause basically all other teams play Post Up/Back to the basket, slow, methodical basketball. Or watch Euroleague. Their style is also different. I do... But right now under this rules teams HAVE TO play this way to have a chance. I didnt say I like it, did I? I just pointed out the facts why teams play that way. And being lazy has nothing to do with it. Teams on average run way more miles per game today then they did in the 90's. Those are just facts. And once more, I would love to see rule changes that give other strategies a chance to be successfull again. But right now thats what teams have to do.
3 pointers? No. Traveling to get those 3 pointers? Yes. Gather step? Yes. No hand checks? Yes. No physical contact allowed? Yes. Basketball was never supposed to be a completely non-contact sport. They've changed and reinterpreted all the rules so that the advantage always goes to the offensive player. You think you have somebody locked up on defense only for them to take two more steps after they've stopped dribbling the ball and then take a shot. It goes against your instincts, because that's not how anybody grew up playing basketball.
Hell yeah way to Many 3 pointers. I went back and watched the playoffs from 2010. The ecf and wcf actually had very good basketball, offense and defense. Go back and watch the 2010 nba finals, lakers vs celtics. That type of defense from that series, in today you will never see that again
They need to get rid of that stupid gather step, allow hand checking, clog the paint, get rid of the defensive 3 second rule, and that will help cut down on the scrimmage feel of these games where it’s just open 3s and open lanes allowed for wide open layups and dunks.
@@thequintanashow5058 agreed, this is the most boring season of NBA I’ve ever seen, then I turn on the Duke/Auburn game and get blown away by the level of effort and competitiveness of the college game. NCAA are making the pros look like the lazy last few runs of rec ball at the YMCA.
Too many games is not an excuse. They've had an 82 game schedule since the 1967/68 season and have been playing 48 minute games since 1946. They've had the shot clock since 1954 and the 3 point line since 1979. It's hard to blame any of those things because they've all been around for so long. Players used to play harder because they had more emotional investment in their team because they expected to play for the same team their entire careers. It's hard to imagine Larry Bird playing for anyone else but the Celtics or Magic playing for anyone but the Lakers. Those two were emotionally invested in their teams and that rivalry.
@@tenderstepsPaul Well, as he pointed out, the number of games, min/game, and the number of shots hasn't changed . Injuries _have_ increased. It seems like the players are taking advantage of teams and trying to get their giant salaries for less work. And as for "too many games", the NBAPA will not entertain the idea of reducing the number of games, because it would reduce the amount of revenue they share.
@@Trollificusv2The style of play is completely different with motion offense and every player expected to run around multiple screens , hedge , constantly pushing the offense is what’s causing all the injuries . The mileage rate is different and because everyone is shooting threes it’s become like a full on open court games . Back in the day you can rely on illegal defense and watch a lumbering centre create the offense .
@@zakariahanaffi9641 That's really interesting. But how do you reduce injuries? I know, apostasy and extremely unlikely but I would reduce the number of games.
To be fair, almost every Celtics player knows how to shoot 3’s and they are all good at it. Only Kornet and NQ are the only two Celtics players that do not shoot 3’s. Their ball rotation surely makes a player open for a 3 especially if the opponent is not playing defense. But yeah, I agree that the era has been a 3 point shoot out since the 2016 Warriors.
Only the Celtics are taking more than half their shots from 3. The league average is like 38% of shots from three. So more like 1 out of 3 shots. How she does not give the basic information for her topic is incomprehensible.
@@Gurenn83 They're only good at them because today's soft rules make it impossible to play defense. Just change one rule. Just one: add hand checking back. You'll see how quickly, all of a sudden, they're not so good anymore.
NBA players now get the rebound, rush the ball up court, and get it to a guy outside the three point circle. He shoots and misses. This happens all the time.
I don't watch the NBA because half the teams have a longer injury list than an NFL team. The fans don't even know if anybody is playing until an hour before the game. I'm sure as he'll not buying tickets in advance
A possible change to consider is the elimination of guaranteed contracts. Only players who have been selected for an All-Star game or named to an All-NBA team during their last contract should be eligible for a max contract. Many players do not seem to play with urgency because they continue to receive payment even when they underperform.
The NBA is absolutely painful these days. 3 pointers are simply not interesting. They need to bring back tougher defence, without it getting to the overly physical side of things from the 80s.
Is fun to wyvern when they make them. This is why it's terrible right now. Watching Steph and Klay make 15-25 a game was awesome. None of these teams are the Warriors of Old. Including the Warriors.
@@hawkname1234 it's nice that you can enjoy them. It's definitely the opposite of what a lot of people want to see. It's compounded by the lack of defence - previously people could be hassled more at the 3 point line. There are so many clips now of whole stretches of a game where teams are just going from one end to the other bricking barely contested 3 pointers - that shit is straight up trash.
As someone who just watched my Denver Nuggets lose to the Clippers by 4 because the Clippers shot 40 THREES and basically acted like the paint didn’t exist after about midway through the third quarter, it’s definitely a big reason why the NBA is becoming less enjoyable
They won... so they did the right thing... I dont get your point here. Your team couldnt stop them from hitting 3's and your team also couldnt outscore them.
@ We lost by 4 even though we didn’t shoot nearly as many 3s (24 as opposed to their 39) and shot like shit from the free throw line. How am I supposed to find watching Harden jack up 15 3s (not a hyperbole, he actually shot 15 threes and made 6 of them) while my team utilizes every part of the floor and we lose because of it?
@@alatreon7451 So, still on your team... right? Btw... 6/15 from 3 equals 9/15 from mid range... 6/15 from 3 is extremely efficient. So it worked! Would you be ok with the loss if Harden had taken 15 10-20 ft shots and made 9? Would that have changed anything for you? If so, thats a you problem...
Position-less basketball is boring. They need to put hand checking back into the game to stop the 3 point play and make centers important again. These players are all spoiled and I just can't watch anymore. The WNBA with the passion the ladies have for the game is what I miss in the NBA.
Did you ever WATCH basketball in the 80s and 90s? The quick passes and breaking a defense down is INFINITELY BETTER than throwing the ball to a tall guy and watching him back down his defender... every single time down the court. It was boring as hell. Scores were usually under 100 points.
They are eating their own too. Constantly disrespecting the past that paved the way for them today as well. Other sports don't do that. It's causing a civil war within the sport as well.
Modern advancements in training, medicine, nutrition and everything else have made mens basketball a solved game. Everyone is skillful enough to dunk and shoot threes, the most efficient shots by the metrics. Pair that with the flopping, traveling and the rest days for the superstars who don't care about their fans or the franchise and you have the modern nba
Lack of defense leads to 3 pointers being easy. Bring back hand check defense, and remove carrying and the 2018 “freedom of movement” rule and you will see the number of 3’s made go down significantly.
Wemby is the most agile, athletic, and skilled 7'4" basketball player in the world. He shoots 10 3s a game at 33% and barely averages 10 rebounds a game. 🤨
I've been watching lots of 1980s Celtics , Pistons , Lakers ...and three missed possessions in a row is begging for an execution in the final quarter , done , cooked. Played with passion and played to win , mistakes cost games.
@@geoffwheeler2994they run their offensive plays to set up as many easy 3s as possible. They want their players shooting threes, it's considered inefficient to shoot midrange jumpers, most efficient shots per possession are either layups (due and ones) and threes
I cancelled my league pass this month after being a subscriber for almost 10 years in a row. This isn't the basketball as I grow up love to watch and evolved into something horrible to watch.
Interesting insights Rachel. I played alot of basketball on Long Island, and was a guest quite a few times with Dr. J s Nets at the Nassau Coliseum. This was the A.B.A. ,and we had the 3 point line already. It was the 70 s. The games were very exciting. Most of the games were played mid range and they didn t depend on the 3 pointer like they do now. There was alot of dunking as entertainment in the ABA. Much more than the NBA at that time. Also ,if it was Dr. J s Nets against the David Thompson Denver Nuggets ,they played tough defense. Very exciting games. I think that to encourage mid range games with better defense, and less 3 pointers tried, the line could be 24 ft. 6in. and taken away from the corners. That corner shot is so easy, and the 23 ft. 9 inches is too tempting. If it were further out ,they would be reluctant to take so many. The players today, with exceptions are taking it easy, and many don t play defense. Certain guys were known for tough defense. Rare these days.
There is only one solution to the 3pt shot explosion, move the 3pt line back 2 feet and take away the corner 3. Then only a few players who can shoot and make the 3 like Steph, Dame and Caitlin will take the shot and everyone else will revert back to more old-fashion basketball. Besides that, I really hate the terms "stretch 4" and "stretch 5".
Players not playing, coaches load managing, and up until last season, too many fouls being called was a huge problem. Also, imo the NBA has the worst All Star game in sports. Having players not trying is a really bad look. The All Star game needs to count for playoff home court, and the NBA Cup needs to remove the cash payout, which is just tacky, and make it count for some kind of post season seeding too.
Fouls and FT WAS NEVER the problem of the modern day NBA. Thats just a lie that people somehow belive. Look up average FT and fouls per game... the 5 lowest seasons in NBA history are the last 5. Teams averaged like 5 more FT in the 90's, while the pace (posessions per game) was way lower... you do the math!
@@Smido83 Mavs-Heat Finals, Mark Cuban was quoted as saying he "enjoyed" watching Dwayne Wade shoot free throws. You just simply don't watch basketball if you claim fouls hasn't been a problem. Citing the raw number completely misses the point of how these fouls are being called, which means you probably got that stat from some stat nerd online somewhere. No one like guys like Curry or Harden free throw hunting.
@@lucasfrank8843 Curry FT hunting? My god... its clear you do not watch basketball and you just hate. And Harden is the main reason why there are less FT called, cause he hunted them in the late 2010's and they changed the rules on what should be called. Btw thats ONE guy. Count Young as another one who did it (and created another change in FT calling) and you have the full list of guys who shoot/shot a lot of FT while actively hunting them. Teams foul less, cause a contested layup at 60% is better then fouling a driver who shoots 80+% from the line. Not to mention that rule changes made it nearly impossible for defenders to stop the drive in the 1st place. And all that still doesnt change the fact that players in the 80's and 90's fouled WAY more and that teams on average shot WAY more FT's. I watch basketball for way over 20 years. And I am a Mavs fan on top of that. So I watched the 2006 finals and all the FT's. So if you do not get Cubans irony, thats on you. Cuban even hired private investigators and got fined like 250k cause he accused the league/refs of cheating for calling all those FT'S. So yeah,he clearly loved it! So dont try to tell me how great the game was back in the day. I have done my reserarch and watched old games... when Teams shot 40% from the field and took 30 FT's just so the game ended 82-75... Oh, and I never said I like the modern game and how one dimensional it is. I just pointed out that the "so many fouls and FT nowadays" myth is flat out wrong!
The NBA goes through cycles...This is just the 3 point era...I would give more credit to the traveling not being called along with the lack of defense.
No, it’s the NBA catering too much towards the offense that’s ruined the game. Let defenders get physical and bring back hand-checking and the game will improve even with players launching threes.
In my opinion its not that they have a 3pt problem. Its more like the game doesn't have any variety in it anymore, and I find it quite boring. Everyone just wants to play pace and space. The game would be so much more interesting if had a healthy mix of teams that played the pace and space style along with teams that play the inside out style. The 3pt shot isn't the problem itself, rather than the style of play is.
Why more teams don't play in the paint blows me away. A huge reason why Jokic looks so good is because hardly anyone else is the league is suited to defend a skilled big.
@@scarletspider1240most NBA teams use a 6'9" 235 lb player at center. No way a guy that little outside of a Dennis Rodman or Ben Wallace has a hope of slowing Jokic down.
@@scarletspider1240 to be fair it would be really hard to find a guy Jokic's size with his basketball iq and passing ability/vision but a big, skilled post up big man? Yeah they could.
I watched a Buck vs Celtics game 2 years ago. The teams combined to shoot over 110 3pt shots. The problem was... they were ALL bricks. It was the dumbest game ever. Teams have become addicted to bad basketball
Honest question, please (English is NOT my native tongue, and, furthermore, my "Basket-Terminology" knowledge is stuck in the 1980´s): ¿¿What does "HAND CHECK" exactly mean??
The game has definitely changed... no inside game, no mid-range game, its all about the 3pt shot. Watched a high school game yesterday and a team shot 30 three pointers...thanks Steph
Go back to PRE-1980 and remove the 3-point line. Teams will have to take better shots since it won't benefit them to shoot 25 foot jumpers. No point in shooting from the logo if it counts the same as other shots
Yeah I stopped watching a few weeks ago, so many threes being thrown at the basket. It looks lazy and like they're just there because they have to be, no attempts at easy 2 pointers most of the time or as many dunks at all, there is just no excitement in watching a game go back and forth shooting threes, it frustrates me because I loved watching the nba.
The nba has become nothing more than just a 3 pt shootout. Dudes don't even play their positions properly anymore the game isn't played correctly. Because of steph curry the game has become a shooting guard game. Everyone thinks they're a sg.
We gotta be fair. This clip is as bad as some of the WNBA clips that went around talking about how the W is an inferior product. Who would pay to go to the arena to watch brick after brick? 😂
Im on here again. I have friends that played for the ABA and the NBA. One more thought that I forgot to mention. A human being can t be so enthused to play when they don t have the legs or the rest for the next practice or next game. That 82 games started years ago and it s insane. These are the greatest athletes in the world and they make loads of money but it s hard on the body.
The three pointers are ruining the NBA! It’s what everyone does, it is all threes and no defense because there is no variety in playstyles from different players and teambuilding is all the same. Just want threes and no variety, no one is doing anything different it’s boring to watch
i got hooked watching the NBA in the time that MJ started to dominate... the very last time i was invested in the league was until the time when stars like Iverson and Kobe retired. i admit myself losing interest when after a year or so watching Curry and the GSW started their dynasty run. i'm not hating or diminishing Steph's achievements. but i felt the novelty of the 'logo three's" grew old fast. for me, it was not much about the physicality that i miss; what i miss was the ATHLETICISM and FINESSE of driving to the hoop and witness a myriad ways the previous superstars dealt with towering/daunting defenses. every attempt was mostly a unique SPECTACLE. these days, i cant help but notice that 3-pointers aren't exactly "more exciting". a 3-pointer to me looks nearly the same as the next. these days, i'm just perhaps waiting for 'something new'... and my attention is elsewhere rn other than the NBA.
Yes three pointers are ruining the game. Soon as they pass Half court someone is jacking up a shot. No effort to get to the rim and everyone is standing at the three point line. It’s boring. This era of basketball is soft and lazy.
nah... it would even open up the lanes even further. the 3 point shot alone is not the problem, it's the widening of the defense. you stretch out the lines further and youd stretch up the defense even more
Move the 3 point line farther by 3 ft which will filter the wannabees from the greats. Then each team will be forced to use amazing plays again closer to the paint.
0:49 This is rough to watch. Shooting 3's is fine, but teams are not shooting 3's now, they're just chucking 3's all game with 18s left on the clock. It's very boring to watch. You are so right that it felt like an all star game, and it's not the all star game from the early 2000's, it's the 2020's all time terrible all star game.
If this is an example of the way NBA games are now being played, one of the teams should somehow entice Caitlin Clark to play for them. She would have made those 3-pointers!! 😂
i dont necessarily think it's that, In my humble opinion its the amount of money they make and the soft nature that ruined this league that i grew up in the seventies with......😏😾
I honestly didn't mind before, when the 3-ball was used as a last-resort shot. But nowadays, players today depend on it TOO MUCH & making it their FIRST offensive option and it's getting ANNOYING....and I'm speaking as a FAN of 3-pt shooting!
It should surprise NO ONE that the end of the ban on zone defense and the three-point changes has turned the game into a 3-point contest. The game is so spread out now I sincerely think there might be room for a six-man team.
I remember that time when they said Clyde Drexler was a better 3 point shooter than Jordan which led to Jordan coming out the next game bombing 3 after 3 draining them like crazy during the NBA Finals. When the journalists asked him why he didnt shoot more 3's he said because he didnt have to. When you have players like Steph and Caitlin who hit at a crazy high percentage then it makes the game entertaining but when you have players who have no business behind the arc chucking them up while totally disregarding defense it just seems to take away from the game. This is all just my opinion of course.
You were spot on in the conclusion. Too many divas in the NBA thinking they work too much already just by practicing. Such a joke league right now. “Oh we have to play 82 games?? We just practiced all summer man…after our annual 4 month vacations and parties.”
What I think NBA could do with all that money that they make, they should use digital court like they did during Steph Curry/Sabrina Ionescu 3 point shootout - the only good thing in 2024 All Star weekend, but have 3 point line come out at a certain point in a game or a quarter. Bring back the art of post and mid range, and also see how players are really skilled in making a basket like their predecessors that built the game. So many things about today's game is boring, lame, and unwatchable - I'm starting to hate NBA as a fan that grew up on late 80s and 90s to early 2000s game.
A good start would be enforcing the rules already in place. Carrying the ball is a turnover, moving your pivot foot is a turnover, lowering your shoulder into somebody is a charge. These things are rarely, if ever, called these days.
I'm not too worried about 3pointers. But what I cannot stand is lack of defense. It is just ridiculous. And then player entitlement. What? Do you want me to play basketball??? It is just insane to think that professional athlete paid to play basketball, a game one would love, making every possible excuse to not play...
Massive volume / reps growing up is what it takes to go pro these days, and that volume is what causes all of these injuries to players. In the 80s/90s there were significantly less injuries despite the 82 game season and the sub-optimal recovery / training regime that existed back then. This allowed for a physical game that was much more interesting and exciting, and it’s why load management / reduced physicality today is such a huge focus. Removing the 3 point line would change the game but wouldn’t solve the lack of defensive intensity - doubt we will ever see the intensity of the 80s & 90s again.
It comes down to math... the 3 pointer is a lower % shot but it's value is greater. Defenses want you to shoot from downtown so the give it up. The closer to the basket the higher the % is you make it (in most cases) but the value is less. Also, if I make 10 3's a game that's 30 points on ten possessions, you'd have to make 15 2's to get 30 pts. which means you need 5 more possessions.
They should make a rule..... No more than ten three point attempts per quarter by each team so teams can only shoot a maximum of forty three pointers per game. You can still shoot from three point land after ten shots but it's just worth two points
Outside of making the court bigger and extending the 3 point line, there’s nothing really that can be done, because it’s not just an NBA issue. These kids don’t play team ball in AAU or high school. It’s all about getting your stats.
The excessive 3s are definitely a huge problem. But it's not the only ones. Here's my list of issues: * Nobody plays anymore. This is not me guessing, it's a fact. The number of players missing games has gone up big time. Now, we're at the point where players are just saying straight up, yeah, I'm not playing back to backs. Would you drop $1K and take your family to a game, only for all the stars to take the day off? * The gather step (and traveling in general). Simply put, players can take 3, 4, 5 and even more steps and it's not called. That makes it way too easy to score. * EVERYTHING IS A FOUL! Of course no one can play D if everything is a foul. That makes it way too easy to score (this will be a theme, btw). * No handchecking. No physicality. This is part of the last point. Again, if you breathe on a player and it's a foul, no crap, players are going to have an easy time scoring. * FLOPPING! When all else fails and a player isn't getting a foul call, flop, flop and flop some more! * You need to be a millionaire to afford all of the tv packages to actually watch the games. * The excessive number of 3s. I still believe if you put the '96 Bulls in a time machine and brought them to today's NBA, they'd win 75 games. They actually ran plays. They weren't just chucking 3s.
How to solve the problems? * Get rid of guaranteed contracts. You play, you get a game check. That would be the quickest way to get rid of load management! * Get rid of the gather step and actually call traveling like they used to. * Bring back hand checking. I'm no longer impressed when a guy scores 30 today, because there's no physicality. * Actually penalize floppers like the NBA said they were going to. Oh, here's another one (which I know the NBA would never touch): Too many teams make the playoffs, making the regular season meaningless. Only 5 teams in each conference should make it in: the 3 division winners and two wild cards. The conference leader in each conference gets a first round bye as a true reward for getting that distinction. Otherwise, what's the point in watching the regular season if everyone gets to make it in anyway?
I think it's just the Caitlin Clark effect! I believe they think if they make a lot of 3's and ur fandom will skyrocket. But CC is complete player and that's what makes her 'Must See TV' in my opinion.
I love CC but it is nowhere near the CC effect...It's the Mike D'Antoni Suns and Rockets effect...If you wanna give credit to one player that would be Stephen Curry winning titles as the best shooter ever.
I could see the current style of play heading our way as far as back as 2010. That coupled with The Decision had me questioning what I was watching, so I cut the league out of my life since then.
Go look at the early 2010s, each team had their own identity. Grit n Grind was always about defence, Heatles with pure blitz, OKC’s run n gun, Lob City Clippers, Bench Mob Raptors. Each player had a role to play, superstars were superstars and defence knew how to be played
You are 100% right about fixing the game. It’s mostly a matter of the players’ fire and it’s not there. It’s that thing you can feel but it’s impossible to definitely call it out on. Too many guys playing to live out their Dad’s nba dreams, Ben Simmons, Tatum, kyrie, Luka, ball bros, booker, Wiggins, rj Barrett and now Bronny is that x100. The guys that built up from nothing to make it out are getting old now KD, Kawhi, Dame, Derozan, etc. Those guys (like Giannis) have real fire and passion for the game. It’s their meal ticket AND their happy place. For most these guys it’s the difference between a BMW and a Lamborghini.
Move back the three point line and widen the arch eliminating the corner three or get rid of it completely. The point is to force the game in the paint/mid-range and prevent low-efficient long range shots. Game would be more intense and strategic when you have to make that crucial three at the top of the key towards the end regulation.
I’ve been watching old Michael Jordan footage here on TH-cam. He’s hands down the GOAT in my opinion. Back in his days you could almost tackle players because there was less restrictive defensive rules. Today, they can’t even look at another player or they get called for a foul. To change the game for the better, NBA should deregulate some of their defensive fouls.
There are ways to increase competition like playing 60 games instead of 82 or only allowing 12 teams into the playoffs instead of 16. Maybe fewer teams? IDK, but competition has to increase if we ever want to see defense played again and prevent players from taking games off for “rest.” I think as far as 3 pointers go, the evidence is clear that the midrange game is almost completely dead in the NBA because it is a lower percentage shot than around the basket and it has less reward then a 3 pointer with similar shooting percentages. More 3’s is a symptom of a statistical problem that promoted the kind of mess that we saw in the clip. Maybe create an incentive like - and these are horrible ideas and just an example of incentive - having 2-3 and 4 point plays or move the 3 point line back in to the traditional High School line if they can somehow still promote floor spreading. IDK, but the middy needs to be somehow incentivized more if we want to see the shot chucking stop and have teams actually running plays or even promoting a semblance of more strategic game play in general.
I can remember (I'm 64) when there was no 3 point line in the NBA or NCAA. In the NCAA, there was no shot clock either. In the 60's and 70's real basketball (boxing out, setting screens, running plays, stressing fundamentals) was MUCH better. Not just basketball, but sports in general is about show business and gambling.....because that's where the money is. Deplorable and unwatchable. Sad.
Bring back hand checking, call moving screens, and decrease the total number of game played in the season. Lets see if the number of threes will go down.
The late 80's , 90's, and early 2000's were the greatest eras ever. Bring hand checking back, get rid of that stupid "Zero Step", bring back big man style post ups, and stop these horrible refs
The problem is role players are being encouraged to take as many 3's as possible from as deep as possible when they really shouldn't be. Sure the analytics say 36% from 3 is better than 50% from 2, but its bad viewing as a fan. No one wants to see bricks being thrown around. The superstars should be the only players given the green light to shoot like that since they're so skilled.
I want to love the NBA...but they don't want fans like me. I attempted to watch a Spurs / Mavericks game a few weeks ago and after 10-20 minutes of casually watching while multitasking and doing other things...I turned it off. Way to many 3s, no defense, too much game stoppage due to stupid fouls and timeouts. The NBA is unwatchable.
Teams taking too many 3 pointers is soooo boring to watch, real defense is lacking and teams are load managing their stars. The NBA should start making dunks count for 3 points while long shots should count for 2 pts only. The more physical plays the better, people will start watching again.
Not just 3-pointers, but LOGO 3-pointers. That's got to be one of the stupidest tactics I've seen in recent memory. Any player worth their salt isn't going to go out of their way to take the _longest_ 3-pt shot they possibly can. Smh. They should be doing drills where they work on coming down court full-speed and stopping with their toes as CLOSE as possible to the 3-pt line so as to maximize their efficiency. Instead we got guys purposely jacking up incredibly low-quality shots from 40 feet out just because Curry can occasionally hit one so they think they can too.
This is why players like Ja Morant and SGA are way more exciting to watch than most NBA stars. Low 3 point attempts, driving to the basketball and handles and dunks. That’s what we want to watch along with good defense and intense games.
The 90's and early 2000's was more of a balanced game. I loved basketball back in those days. I feel like basketball hasn't been the same since. I've wanted hand checking back in the NBA for years. Not only is there an insane amount of 3's now, but there's also no hand checking on the perimeter to play better defense against those 3's. The "freedom of movement" rule made in 2018 is a complete joke, players can run wide open all day now. Once that FOM was created, I stopped watching full basketball games. I'm more of a highlight or part-time viewer now.
It is almost like the NBA players today want the maximum reward for the absolute least amount of effort.
Efficient?? 3 minutes with no scoring is efficient?

If they just ran layup drills for 4 quarters they'd score 300 pts each...but I wouldn't call it "best offense ever". One thing it surely ISN'T, and that's "more entertaining".

You don’t think there are too many 3 pointers?
Hell yeah way to Many 3 pointers. I went back and watched the playoffs from 2010. The ecf and wcf actually had very good basketball, offense and defense. Go back and watch the 2010 nba finals, lakers vs celtics. That type of defense from that series, in today you will never see that again
They need to get rid of that stupid gather step, allow hand checking, clog the paint, get rid of the defensive 3 second rule, and that will help cut down on the scrimmage feel of these games where it’s just open 3s and open lanes allowed for wide open layups and dunks.
I cannot believe people pay to watch today’s NBA. This is beyond boring. Beyond.
Even “good shooters” like Klay for 0 for 10 in elimination games, it’s just all high volume chucking 3 pointers now

Thank you for your really informative comment, and I agree about the commitment part. Do you think there are too many games given injuries?
@@tenderstepsPaul Well, as he pointed out, the number of games, min/game, and the number of shots hasn't changed . Injuries _have_ increased. It seems like the players are taking advantage of teams and trying to get their giant salaries for less work.
And as for "too many games", the NBAPA will not entertain the idea of reducing the number of games, because it would reduce the amount of revenue they share.

50 3-pt attempts a game is absolutely ridiculous. That's more than 1 attempt every minute.
Yeah this is a crazy number
To be fair, almost every Celtics player knows how to shoot 3’s and they are all good at it. Only Kornet and NQ are the only two Celtics players that do not shoot 3’s. Their ball rotation surely makes a player open for a 3 especially if the opponent is not playing defense. But yeah, I agree that the era has been a 3 point shoot out since the 2016 Warriors.

Many players do not seem to play with urgency because they continue to receive payment even when they underperform.
The NBA is absolutely painful these days. 3 pointers are simply not interesting. They need to bring back tougher defence, without it getting to the overly physical side of things from the 80s.

I agree...tried to watch the Hornets game who finally played on NBA TV...but Lamelo was out....turned the TV off
Fouls and FT WAS NEVER the problem of the modern day NBA.

There’s a reason during the all star game they do 3s and dunks 90 percent of the time. Now they do it in the regular season lol.
It’s also a huge defense issue. Why do teams switch and give the other team the mismatch??? They switch literally 98% of the time
i got hooked watching the NBA in the time that MJ started to dominate... the very last time i was invested in the league was until the time when stars like Iverson and Kobe retired. i admit myself losing interest when after a year or so watching Curry and the GSW started their dynasty run.
i'm not hating or diminishing Steph's achievements. but i felt the novelty of the 'logo three's" grew old fast. for me, it was not much about the physicality that i miss; what i miss was the ATHLETICISM and FINESSE of driving to the hoop and witness a myriad ways the previous superstars dealt with towering/daunting defenses. every attempt was mostly a unique SPECTACLE.
these days, i cant help but notice that 3-pointers aren't exactly "more exciting". a 3-pointer to me looks nearly the same as the next. these days, i'm just perhaps waiting for 'something new'... and my attention is elsewhere rn other than the NBA.
Yes three pointers are ruining the game. Soon as they pass Half court someone is jacking up a shot. No effort to get to the rim and everyone is standing at the three point line. It’s boring. This era of basketball is soft and lazy.
Maybe they should make the 3 point line farther to discourage it.
nah... it would even open up the lanes even further. the 3 point shot alone is not the problem, it's the widening of the defense. you stretch out the lines further and youd stretch up the defense even more
Move the 3 point line farther by 3 ft which will filter the wannabees from the greats. Then each team will be forced to use amazing plays again closer to the paint.
I'd go even further back than that. You'd have to widen the court but I think a 30 foot standard NBA three pointer would be interesting.
They ALREADY ALL DO. Most teams take 60+% of their shots from 2!!!!
0:49 This is rough to watch. Shooting 3's is fine, but teams are not shooting 3's now, they're just chucking 3's all game with 18s left on the clock. It's very boring to watch. If this is an example of the way NBA games are now being played, one of the teams should somehow entice Caitlin Clark to play for them. She would have made those 3-pointers!! 😂
Oh, yeah. These guys are the most SKILLED players, ever. Yeah.
i dont necessarily think it's that, In my humble opinion its the amount of money they make and the soft nature that ruined this league that i grew up in the seventies with......😏😾
I honestly didn't mind before, when the 3-ball was used as a last-resort shot. But nowadays, players today depend on it TOO MUCH & making it their FIRST offensive option and it's getting ANNOYING....and I'm speaking as a FAN of 3-pt shooting!
Player change is what the NBA need.
Todays NBA is like watching a Gus Macker tournament with a bunch of 12-year-olds just jacking up three's with no idea what defense looks like.
They have to move the three point line back
Yes no defense and three point practice called a NBA game has made the game boring it is not the display of athleticism it once was.
you chose a great sequence of clumsy 3 point shots and I really enjoyed yr humorous commentary. Subbed!
I wouldn't be surprised if the nba has to bring in a rule like each team can't shoot more than 20 3's a game if ratings continue to spiral.
I hope that doesn’t happen. It seems very totalitarian to dictate how a team achieves it’s points.
Implement these 2 rules:
1.0 point per block
2.5 points per dunk
This should deter the need for 3 point attempts and bring physicality
Lakers' 3s were wide open, and like usual, they can't hit them
It comes down to math... the 3 pointer is a lower % shot but it's value is greater.
Here's my list of issues:
* Nobody plays anymore.
Fixing 3s, btw, would be fixed with the hand checking, because they, all of a sudden, wouldn't be so easy to make.
A lot of those were good open looks. Just didn't fall. It was more about how many shots in a row they missed than the kind of shots they were taking.
With this style of play even if almost the shots go in and the score is 185-184 it is not great entertainment.
3pt shot attempts: 1st ok, 2nd meh, 3rd bad, 4th bad, bad, 5th good, 6th bad, 7th good, 8th bad.
IDK, but competition has to increase if we ever want to see defense played again and prevent players from taking games off for “rest.”
I think as far as 3 pointers go, the evidence is clear that the midrange game is almost completely dead in the NBA because it is a lower percentage shot than around the basket and it has less reward then a 3 pointer with similar shooting percentages.
Some teams, like the Cleveland Cavaliers play a much more exciting game with actual plays and passes with inside and outside shooting.
Ruining? It’s been ruined for years. The NBA is an embarrassment, it’s sad to watch.
They need to make the 3 point shot 2.5 points. You might think I'm joking but I'm serious.
Lack of defense on 3s 🎉
