As a French-speaking Montrealer, I would highly recommend learning a bit of French if you want to live here. For me, it's a question of respect. We don't care if your English is not perfect, but we do appreciate anglophones making an effort. Most of us do speak English, so why not return the respect? So in that sense, it's hard to understand why a lot of people don't make an effort, not even to say "Bonjour". And I understand that it's Zoe's experience that English is not required for her work, but if you don't know a minimum of French, many employers will not even return a phone call, specially if it's a customer-facing job. It is a French province after all.

Uff... I don't want to be a Debbie downer, but being proficient in French (not just kind of good) is definitely important if you want to live and work here. Sure, you might find a job at a multi-national type of company where your English will be enough, or you can get the lowest of the lowest income jobs (flipping burgers, loading FedEx trucks). But basically, if your French isn't good enough you'll only have access to about 10-15% of job opportunities. Not only that, but when you leave your anglophone bubble, you'll come across people who don't know speak any English. And that doesn't apply just to people outside of Montréal. Hey! from Montreal!...ok well actually, just a little bit outside of Montreal to the west :P But, I've lived in Montreal (West Island) since I came here from Japan at the age of 8 for a couple of decades, and LOVE the city. I call it my "hometown" for sure. Having to learn french came to me at High School, but definitely got used to speaking the language when I started working. Good luck to you and hope you get to explore MORE of the city post Covid! xo
I lived in Quebec for 6 months and I can 100% say speaking to people in french was a struggle cuz they'd get like annoyed(?) and just switch to another language mostly adults, but the younger generations don't really seem to care in which language you speak
Red tape is a Canadian thing , not necessarily a Montreal or Quebec Ct. , thing I know that I lived here in Montreal 40 yrs !!!! U did know , that there are suburbs , 5 minutes from Montreal ???
If you speak spanish only, you could live in the U.S. such as Texas, New Mexico, or California just to name a few, without speaking a word of english, much like you could work and live in Montréal without speaking a word of French. However, in both cases, I don't recommend it. It's a lack of respect and a failure to integrate.
It's so helpful! I've recently applied for some jobs there that are opened to foreign people (talent Montreal program). At least in IT area, some positions require French and some don't, I think it is a plus, but I speak very little 😪 Cheers from Argentina! 🙌

Nice video! Just a thing I want to say about the woman laughing to the bad prononciation of an employee - I might be wrong, but personally, I find it disrespectful from the employee or the company (I guess it was Via). People paid to do communication in french should be able to prononce, not perfectly, but at least ... not awfully. Many times, in airplanes for example, we have to listen to security measures in english because the one in french are inaudible.

Montreal sounds amazing. I would love to get the opportunity to live there and I coincidentally speak some french so it would be great to be immersed a bit and improve it there. Merci pour la superbe vidéo ❤❤❤
amazing!! hopefully you get the chance ❤️❤️
You're such a sweetheart, love how impartial you are.
Watching this from Monaco (Monte Carlo)! Hoping to make a move to Montreal soon :D
When?
my dream school is concordia! im applying for next fall so i really hope i get in. fingers crossed!
so exciting!! i hope you get to go 🐝
I live in the GTA and i visited montreal last year and loved but you’re not the first person to mention the snobby behaviour when it comes to speaking french 😫 loved this video by the way.
yeah its so unfortunate because it deters so many people from moving here or learning the language 🙃
Good video. You need to make more video like that. All the best from Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
5:54 sooo on point wow, well done!!
hahahaahah thank you!!
the best video about montreal that I have ever found, love it! One more subscriber, keep it up girl 💕
wow thank you so much!!! & welcome 💖💖
I live an hour away to Montreal and I don't know where I want to move yet about 1 year in half cuz quebec is an amazing place
Hi Zoe! I went to Montreal a few years back and loved it! My best friend here in London, UK; she is from there! She speaks both languages but she told me pretty much the same things you said about how it works with French. :) Nice video!
thank you!! ❤️❤️❤️
Does your friend prefer london vs montreal?
Montreal (in the Nation of Quebec) is the only French metropolis in the Americas! Close to 400 years of history!
Quebec is not a nation ... it's just one of many provinces in Canada .... live with it.
It is nice that french is kind of a midway between Eng. and Portuguese, I cant't speak at all, but I can usually understand it if the other part speaks sloooooooow enough
french is cousin to portuguese and influence english when french was the language of english nobility.
Oh you live in Montreal. Oh I love going there during the F1 race. Wonderful place in the summer ☘️
Ahhh please make a video about your school experience in Montreal!!
Daniela López 💖💖💖 will do
Could you please make a video about schools & colleges ?
American Apparel was founded in Montreal, in the Shmatta (Fashion) District.
Ditto for Vice (Magazine).
loved this video
Hey! from Montreal!...ok well actually, just a little bit outside of Montreal to the west :P But, I've lived in Montreal (West Island) since I came here from Japan at the age of 8 for a couple of decades, and LOVE the city. I call it my "hometown" for sure. Having to learn french came to me at High School, but definitely got used to speaking the language when I started working. Good luck to you and hope you get to explore MORE of the city post Covid! xo
thats awesome!!! 💖💖
I lived in Quebec for 6 months and I can 100% say speaking to people in french was a struggle cuz they'd get like annoyed(?) and just switch to another language mostly adults, but the younger generations don't really seem to care in which language you speak
this can be so true!!
I loved it there when I visited but I will only visit in summer
With love from Detroit!
Watching from Gabon ❤
It's so helpful! I've recently applied for some jobs there that are opened to foreign people (talent Montreal program). At least in IT area, some positions require French and some don't, I think it is a plus, but I speak very little 😪
Cheers from Argentina! 🙌
Can u explain about this talent Montreal program)
thats great!!
Hi Elián!! I'm as well looking for this progran (Soy mexicana!), do you have any extra information regarding the process you're going through? I'd love to talk about it
Also, let me know if u speak Spanish :)
@@anasofiabarbosa3061 Hi Ana! Yes I speak spanish :P No problem! If you want, you can DM at insta @elianb91 or tell me how, bye!
I literally love montreal and I’ll be moving there soon
Je peux t'aider à apprendre un peu plus de français 😉 Happy you like your experience.
17:34 i think i'm in love
Vancouver or Montreal, which should I visit first?
Watching from Louisiana.
Yeah! Make a video about your college experience! 😆✨
okii 🤗
Yes!
Winters are much colder in Montréal, compared to Toronto.
The snow melts in a few days after falling in Toronto.
In Montréal, it accumulates from November to April.
Hi! I’m looking into moving from the states to get my Masters in Occupational Therapy at McGill. I would love to hear about your school experience! Also, I am interested in hearing more about the job market for international students . Especially for those who are beginners in French 👀. Thanks!
hi Tara!! my university experience video will come out this Sunday 🎉 job opportunities arw quite good, I have a few intl friends who found jobs after graduation!
@@ZoePritchard that’s good to hear. thank you so much for replying 😊! I’m now more confident in pursuing my move ✨
Ha, she says Montreal might feel underwhelming sizewise. Girl... it is still >30x bigger than where I live in now (population).
Hi! just wondering about the weather in Montreal? Like i've heard that winters can be brutal so i was just wondering how you adjusted to it and all that. Thanks!! Great video :)
Sam I Am thanks!! yes winter is brutal but its like anywhere else in Canada. I grew up in Ottawa which has similar winters. All you can do is bundle up, stay positive, and make the most out of it by going on winter walks, sledding, skiing, etc
You might like learning that fish is not considered vegetarian food.
Do not be afraid to contact me. I was born and raised in Mtl. Plateau, Rosemont, Little Italy, I've been DJ in St-Henri right next to the metro station.
Do you need french to know french in Montréal. It is just respectful to speak french in Montréal in Rome do ad Romans do!
Starts at 2:10
This video is super informative and it covers all the topics that I want.. I applied Master Degree at Concordia University and still waiting for the application result.. Could you please make a video of ur sch life and days at Concordia university.. I really would like to see more contents about it …
Best way to learn french? Watch French movies on netflix? Cya !
love from Brazil !!!!!
I'm a truck driver passionate about moving to Montreal.Does anyone know a program or job fair that is open to non-french speakers from outside North America?
The official language of Quebec is French it doesn’t make sense that you could live without knowing French it’s impossible. It’s like saying you could live in China without speaking Chinese.
You are wrong
Excellent, thanks for the video!
Very nice vid... Thx 4 the info Peace
Awsome video! I’m a born and raised in Montreal… you should read the book series swap club; fictitious swingers club and it takes place in Montreal by a local English Montreal author!
Just subscribed to you zoe love your vibes
thanks!!
Montreal is a little cliquish. I got that impression too.
I had lived for a year in centvill Montreal. But what is your preference French and English. Thanks Zoya. Merci Beacoup.
Hi, which pub serves the best IPA's? And is Milton Park ok to live in?
Great video. I am 57 . Looking forward to my move to M
I hope it goes well for you!!
My wife loves Montreal
Montreal is the real deal. No city in Canada even comes close.
Seriously, I never saw a city with so much passion. The rest of Canada looks so generic and boring compare.
That's because the rest of Canada is like the US, whereas Montreal is more European.
Could you make a comparison video of montreal vs toronto? Like pros & cons in different categories.
Ive never lived in Toronto so I can’t say too much 🙈
Salut Zoe!
Btw, you can respond in english haha.
Hi! It really depends on which company you want to work for. Like I said in the video, you could get by here with zero french. I would say mine is 8/10 spoken and 6/10 written hahah. If you want to move here, make it happen & you’ll improve your french upon arrival 😌
Tu écris très bien, viens habiter à Montréal on besoin de toi.
@@JL-wh3jj Merci! Je l'apprecie beaucoup! Peut etre a l'avenir... Absolument apres le Covid 19 :D Je suis alle a Montreal l'ete derniere pour mes etudes a l'universite de montreal haha.
Girl I don’t know you but you’re so beautiful 😍
Here’s a like
@6:20 Considering Via Rail is a crown corporation, I do think it's a shame that an employee wouldn't be fluent in both official languages. I'm sure if the announcer was a francophone but butchered his english when announcing the arrival in Toronto, he'd get even more complaints.
Hi Zoe, thank you for this video, super informative and covers all the main topics! I went to University in the US (NY) and have a BA in psychology and Business. I moved back home to Korea but looking to go abroad again, and Montreal seems awesome! How's the chances of getting a job in consulting sector for someone who has experience outside of North America? xx
I've heard they really value international experience at consulting firms :)
