I've put Fuile on and... yeah, I was trying to like this more than the content on it, because it's got some glimmering moments you cringe through the rest for. I see how this files with Lament, though it's at least competent. Maybe they should institute a rule where "If you can't make Sean play like he's interested, write better songs"
Interesting ranking... love how the albums described as having quality tracks, etc. Are then placed at the bottom. 😂 perhaps a comment on the quality of the albums overall
i agree with your top 2 picks and i feel like gold against the soul gets shit on unfairly. i also own two copies of nicky's solo album and i bought neither of them.
That was a very entertaining and informative video. Ranking The Manic's output isn't an easy task. Think every release has it's merits even the growers like 'Rewind The Film' & 'The Ultra Vivid Lament'. Bonus points awarded for ranking 'Gold Against The Soul' & 'Journal for Plague Lovers' so high, with the latter being my favourite album of theirs.
I cannot understand for the life of me why Gold Against The Soul was given so much flack from the band. When it comes to the Manic Street Preachers, I always say musically the first four albums are the best ones they ever made. But from a commercial point of view maybe the others after them. I hate to say this though, I did find that The Holy Bible a very hard album to listen to. But my own personal favourite is Gold Against The Soul. But when all is said and done, I do agree with the ranking of the Albums that Colin Surname has put together.
I wrote this ranking before watching. I'm terrible at it, it will feel wrong very soon and it becomes more difficult the more you think about it. 1. The Holy Bible 2. Futurology 3. This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours 4. Everything Must Go 5. Generation Terrorists 6. Lifeblood 7. Gold against the Soul 8. Postcards from a Young Man 9. The Ultra Vivid Lament 10. Rewind the Film 11. Journal for Plague Lovers 12. Know Your Enemy 13. Resistance Is Futile 14. Send Away the Tigers Not ranking the solo albums because the only one I'm really familiar with is TGW. Watching the video, it felt strange how I agreed with almost everything you said about the 90s works, but had increasingly different views on the newer albums. How can people not hate SATT? Thanks for all your Manics-related videos though, I really enjoy them!
Yeah, on these longer videos it's gonna be hard to maintain the one-dimensional ranking format, and maybe unnecessary, as long as I can talk about the qualities of each. Already thinking "maybe I'd swap ranks 3 and 2" but it doesn't matter at that scale; everything's gonna have different strengths. I can tune in to the pomp of SATT in bits, but not deeply or so often.
I wonder if our 90s opinions are Preset/influenced by their historic, Canonical audience definitions, then it gets wilder as we try and improvise something to think about less established things! That said, I've placed GATS quite differently.
I am definitely influenced by the general audience telling me what to look for in an album, so I guess you are right. A prime example in my case would be EMG, on which I would probably have given up prematurely if I hadn't been told how great it was. Then again, KYE is an album where I don't really get the praise or the criticism and don't go along with the majority opinion. (Or is there even a majority opinion on KYE? Maybe not.)
Interesting order I have only fully listened to a few of their albums think I will get the second one and journal for plague lovers next ..I do like the ultra vivid lament though :0
Ok, I will do my own ranking (of the albums I actually listened multiple times) before I watch your video, from best to least awesome: 1. The Holy Bible 2. Rewind the Film 3. Postcards from a Young Man 4. This Is My Truth, Tell Me Yours 5. Everything Must Go 6. Gold Against the Soul 7. Futurology 8. Lifeblood 9. Know Your Enemy 10. Generation Terrorists No ratings (still ranked from best to worse, but I only listened once or twice) Ultra Vivid Lament Journal For Plague Lovers Resistance is Futile Send Away the Tigers

Can't remember the specifics but that's probably what I intended, yeah. "Quality tracks" might just mean that it's not consistent quality
An admirable analysis
Nice selection! The Holy Bible will ALWAYS be up there with their best work. - C

A little too cruel on Futurology, but really I'm just happy that I found a fellow Australian Manics fan xo
Uhh, you're only 9.5 thousand miles out there
@@csurname going on accent… I thought I was hearing some ‘local’ inflection there! Sorry for assuming!
@@lateleigh Nope, sorry. Though I guess it's not quite the distance I quoted if we go through the Earth's core.

Yes! I've always thought Gold Against The Soul was unfairly kicked.

"You're a mistake if you don't like it". Bit harsh but on point!

I’d put Know Your Enemy above Generation Terrorists and dare I say Everything Must Go
A number one album at the bottom of the pile...sure thing.
I contributed to that charting! I bought it before I heard it, though.
