I really like the harpsichord, if it were more SATB it'd be so much nicer, in choir at the moment we're doing a Purcell anthem that's beautiful, Purcell was the key repotoire of most cathedral choirs' anthems and he'll stick with me forever

You can tell as it's in a different key, there's a countertenor (based) instead of a female soprano and the harpsichord part is different (being improvised off a figured bass part). Not to criticise this channel who is doing Gods work for us students, but something I thought was important to note

Everybody in my GCSE music class didn't really like this and it seems to be the same in the comments but I actually really like it. The singing is so beautiful and I like the depressing feel of the harpsichord and bass violin in the background.

Every time I listen to this i descend a little further into insanity. It's day 878 of knowing of its existence and being reminded of it in class. I've tried therapy, hospital but nothing... nothing is relieving me of this cancerous and demonic song. I can feel the end coming, this is it for me. Hey as much as this is getting hate, I think the singer is on rhythm and doesn’t ornament a lot, so it is good for learning the piece and just hearing it. Of course there are better videos of this if you’re here to just appreciate the music but otherwise it’s okay.

@@orihallmark In my highschool you wasnt. Playing an actual instrument was a small percentage of the grade and even then, we were taught and supported by our teacher. But my music teacher was absolutely amazing at her job. I went from not caring about music at all (i was forced into the subject) to getting a grade 8 and music becoming something that i really enjoy. A lot of people got really high grades in my class. Perhaps more people just need better music teachers

DEFINITLY NOT MUSIC GCSE NOTES :) The piece is written by Henry Purcell, Purcell was born in 1659 and died in 1695 at the age of 36 but although he had a short life he wrote music for over 40 plays, and music for a while is written for John Dryden’s play ‘Oedipus’ in 1692. The piece was written in the Baroque period, this period was roughly between the years 1600-1750 and some of Purcell’s contemporaries were Johann Sebastian Bach and Antonio Vivaldi. The Texture of the piece is melody and accompaniment (melody -dominated homophony) with some counterpoint (polyphony) provided by RH (right hand) Harpsichord. The time signature is 4/4 meaning there is four beats in a bar. The Ground Bass is entirely quavers/arpeggio based/many semitone intervals. The voice is a soprano voice, Soprano melody - word setting mostly syllabic(following speech rhythm), mostly conjunct/stepwise (one note to a syllable) frequent passing notes in bar 5, and the piece includes a Bass Viol (Bass Viol- resemble the cello with a flat back, sloped shoulders, between 5 and 7 strings) and a Harpsichord. The soprano is a range of a 9th E-F (+ornamentation G). The singer uses melisma (melisma = singing a single syllable while moving between several different notes). The piece is minor which suits the sombre nature of the play and text. In the introduction of the piece the RH harpsichord is very decorative - many dotted rhythms and ornamentation. The dominant key is E minor. In bar 19 there is extended melisma to represent the everlasting atmosphere. It ends with the highest ornamental note in bar 36 and finally a perfect cadence in bar 38.
