The running forever at the end of 1-1 is because you broke that brick. If it’s broken, nothing stops Mario from just leaving, even in the original version.

Fun fact: The brick you broke in the castle at the end of the first level is in the regular game. It's the reason why Mario stops. This is why he kept walking afterwards.

The reason you softlocked on the first level is because that brick you broke on the castle is supposed to stop mario from going forever, the same thing will happen in normal mario too, if you manage to break it.

SMB1 flagpoles are programmed to have Mario walk until he hits a solid block.
The way SMB1 castles are programmed: the door puts Mario in the background layer, and the tile right next to it is actually a solid block.
You may think that Mario went inside the castle, but he is actually walking to the right behind it.
No Naked Lakitus were harmed in the making of this game / video

The reason you didn’t go in the castle the first time was bc the brick you broke tells the game where to start counting down seconds from your timer.

The reason you didn't go into the castle at the first time (2:20) is because after hitting the flagpole, the game checks every frame if Mario stopped or not, if Mario stops the level ends. Since you don't have any control over Mario after hitting the flagpole the game stops you by making you hit a brick block that is left of the castle entrance but you broke the brick block at 2:11, so Mario can't stop and keeps on going.

The brick at the castle (that you broke) is there to stop mario from going beyond the castle, and thats why Mario went for a walk..
