Coming back again to say that I still can’t get over how there is little to no Ranch dressing in Scotland. I’ve heard this before and now every time I use Ranch for something, I think about how much the Scottish people are missing out on it!!!! LOL 😂

What a wonderful way to ease into the weekend - enjoyed this so much while I sipped on a new discovery to me; Torani's brown sugar cinnamon syrup in my morning coffee. Decadent, I know, but oh so good on chilly days. I LOVE Fall, my favourite time of year. I too enjoy the peace of home and being retired, avoid crowds by shopping or running errands when most are at work. By month's end we will have snow so my gardening now consists of cleaning out the pots, bringing deck decor into the garage and preparing for the winter. I hope to join you tomorrow for your livestream - looking forward to it so much!
Slugs and snails keep eating everything in my garden as well. I am trying to catch them away now but they are everywhere, they discourage me at times to do things in the garden because 'slugs will eat it anyway'. But I like to garden so I keep coming back to it. I can't wait for the fall colors to appear! Love them so much. Your video is beautiful as always!
Yea it’s bad. I also saw someone cutting long strips of bramble vines and wrapping their pots /plants in it since they don’t want to crawl on spikes. But I can’t see that stopping the tiny ones??
I bought sticky copper tape to wrap around pots, it kinda works but as soon as your plant touches something else, like a fence or another plant then the slugs will use that 'bridge' to get to the plant. But I have only so much space to have free standing plants...
Another great slug & snail trick is to put bowls of beer around & if you can semi cover them ( recycle a plastic container with a doorway cut out & put over bowl ) so snails & slugs can get in but keeps the rain out, they are attracted to the yeast in the beer & drown in the bowl so you will have to regularly check & dispose of drunk dead slugs & snails. Another is to put rocksalt around the base of pots as salt apparently burns them so the don't like sliding over it.
Oh Sarah this was such a lovely vlog! I expanded my garden this year and it was mostly a major success! I was fighting off some japanese beetles and powdery mildew, but overall it was a good year To answer your question about yellow squash, yellow squash is like the broader term and then you have more specific descriptors for the different squash shapes. the one you got from the farm stand looks to be a Yellow Straightneck Squash. it's the kind you most commonly would have found in Colorado super markets. The other common shape is crookneck. you can also find Paddypan squash, which is flatter and rounder and looks kinda like a flying saucer; it has a very similar taste to straightneck and crookneck squash. Yellow Squash has been a staple in my garden for years for my mom and they're really quite easy to grow! I haven't grown them in a pot before but maybe that could be an experiment for you next year if you can find some seeds to start from, or even a sprouted seedling. just be warned you probably wont need more than 1 plant to make it to maturity! They're prolific little buggers!
i was surprised that not a lot of trees change colour here, its nothing like back in ontario with a huge show of colour. most of the trees around here just stay green
Also the views of the Cairngorms are amazing! I visited them this summer but I was slightly disappointed: the part where I walked from the campsite was only deforested forest, like a workspace. I get that it has to be done but I had hoped to see more views like yours :) l need to do a bit more research next time at least I know it IS really pretty, I just happened to be in the 'wrong' place. (Still had pretty spots around)
I used that site quite a lot during and in preparation of our vacation in Scotland because you mentioned it in one of your earlier videos on the Moray Coast. It was super helpful and great hikes but in this case it didn't went as planned, I had found hikes in the surroundings a short ride from our campsite but due to circumstances we did not leave that campsite much and I ended up hiking alone from the campsite. I definately want to return at some point, there stull so much to see! I feel so lucky I can see it already through your eyes and lenses.

@@bluewren65 Miracle Grow is a mostly chemical potting soil substitute. It is not good for the environment. It is overall not good for plants or other growing things. Should use bagged, sterile potting soil amended with compost (and dried used tea and coffee grounds). Crushed eggshells are good to mix in.

When you record 5 hours of footage, what's the average percentage you usually end up not using and what happens with that? Do you store it in some archive, thinking maybe it will be valuable in the future?
Good question! That is an actual issue for me and many other youtubers. I record more than I actually use. I often use videos as reference to paint, not just for youtube. BUT I still have too much. I have a dropbox account where I store everything. I still pull from the old archives occasionally so I don't just want to delete it. Nowadays I record less for two reasons: I want to be more present and I want to store less footage. It took a long time to know what exact footage I might use, so I'm much more efficient now. Like I don't have as much unused footage this year compared to last year.
@@sarahinscotland I would hate to delete footage. 😂 But it's not only the storage space they add up, also the administration of it. You may remember a nice part from a walk of an autumn but which year and which exact recording do you need to look for? Do you make notes? Honestly, I would probably not use cloud storage because uploading and downloading is constant transferring of data. I'd buy 3 pcs of SSDs and would fill them with the same data. They are getting cheaper and cheaper with every year. (Of course I don't know how many TB of data we are talking about. Maybe Dropbox turns out to be cheaper at the end. 🤭)
Up until 2023 I kept everything on HDD plus online backup. But now I just do previous 6 months on HDD plus online backup. It’s a risk. But worst case if drop box fails I only lost a few months and can download my final files from TH-cam and still grab bits and pieces of them. I’m going for digital minimalism these days. Less worry and fuss on a computer and more about living. And yes overall it’s a a lot, probably upwards of 15 TB over the past 5 years
@@sarahinscotland I think if you pay for Dropbox you cannot lose your data unless major catastrophe / natural disaster wipes out all their servers. 😵💫 So Dropbox is safer than storing data on SSD/HDD at home. But access is a hassle. SSDs are less prone to physical damage than HDDs if you go for that. And I would make sure 1 copy is placed in another location than your house. 🙂 Data storage is a hassle but they invent newer and newer technologies. The size of SSDs are really getting down. The newest 2TB I bought for my laptop was cca. the size of a thicker credit card.
Yea it feels pretty safe. I’ve had 2TB drives crash before and it was awful. I prefer smaller drives in case something happens. But with the online backup I’m not too worried.

Can I offer my top tip if you are making jam? I'm going to anyway. Don't throw out any glass jars that have sauce etc in them. Reuse them, saves a lot of money and at least you know that the lids are secure and will seal properly. Hope that maybe helps you out a bit.
I started saving the jars so I have a few to begin with. I’m mostly interested in making fruit leather and dried fruits since I don’t eat a lot of jam or spreads.

I started my green thumbing late summer this year on my apartment porch balcony area and my zucchini plant that grew so big right before the zucchini began to show..died :( lol, I think I gave it too much fertilizer.. it was my first attempt at planting and growing anything from the seeds itself. I grow scallions, basil, thyme, and bokchoy. But it's getting cold now here in Chicago. 49 at night feels like 42 and high 50's in the daytime until Summer decides to pop up one odd day again! I know what you mean. I agree it’s better to let nature do it’s thing, it helps with biodiversity. Unfortunately my lease dictates we keep it looking a certain way. Just another motivation for me to find my dream property that I can call my own and do my own thing!

Thanks for 'joining me' in enjoying the autumn :) Another interesting fact - Scotland is apparently not a fan of pumpkin...can't find canned pumpkin or anything similar in the stores. I had to buy a pumpkin and will chop it up to bake my pumpkin pie which is one of my favorites. Pumpkin muffins too.
When we first moved to the Tassie highlands I had this dream of my timber cottage draped in trailing roses, what I didn't realise was POSSUMS! They eat everything. Then I thought, "daffodils pop up through the lawn, I'll plant irises and tulips and in the spring I'll have beautiful bulbs everywhere! Nope, roos dug them up and ate them not long after planting them. I have discovered that possums don't eat wisteria, so have some young plants growing up the house poles. We have a large vege garden. We have 4 varieties of plums and about 20 espaliered apple and pear trees which do well, as does the large berry patch. The vege garden is fenced and heavily fortified with electricity and all the fruit trees have to be netted or parrots will come in and clean up the lot overnight. We have a very short growing season. We had 3 La Nina years in a row during which it wasn't even worth trying to grow veges as the temperatures would oscillate between mid 20s, to low 30s celsius and then drop down to like 10 degrees for 2 days. We are now in El Nino and have bought two new huge water tanks so looking forward to a big year in the vege garden.
@@sarahinscotland It's a team sport - my husband does all the heavy stuff, I do the planting, picking and preserving. It's insect repellent year round - midges in the summer, leeches all year, yikes!
Are you sure the garlic will survive in a pot in Scotland? Will not survive in Denmark, I think of a pot being above the ground “in the Air” and not having the benefit of the warmth from the Ground beneath.
No I’m not sure 😅 it’s an experiment. But I don’t have ground to plant it. My side garden where I grow some flowers and dill only has dirt a few inches deep before it’s completely stones. So for now I can only use pots for veg. I did buy a little “dome” to put over the plants to see how it goes!
Ahh your videos are so gorgeous and relaxing. Autumn is also my favorite, with the temperatures turning crisper and the foliage changing colors. I managed to get out for a hike last week, and there's something so magical about seeing all the golden hues and the occasional leaves falling and twirling in front of you. I've had less time to paint recently, so getting to squeeze in a small sketch while hearing about your cooking and gardening adventures has been a true delight! Thank you for sharing this with us
We suddenly had TONS of rain, almost 3 days straight and now everything is flooding. It was kinda scary. But hopefully we will get a break and be able to enjoy a bit of autumn colors soon!

Yep it's just the Cairngorm ski center car park but take the trail towards Ben Macdui and you'll soon cross the Allt Coire an t-Sneachda. You can do a shorter 6 mile loop from Stob Coire an t-Sneachda to Cairn Gorm. Or longer if you add Ben Macdui

Hey Sarah! Autumn is definitely my favorite time of year! From someone who makes everything from scratch, you can make your own Ranch dressing! I do it all the time. You get to control the ingredients and make as little or as much as you'd like. I'm a homesteader at heart. I can't have a garden where I am, but I can grow a few herbs in pots. I love supporting my local farmer and putting it up for the winter. I'm happy you'll be doing this!

Yes there are lots of evergreens here. But I feel lucky that my little area has a lot of deciduous trees and it gets very colorful!!
the leaves that do change here, go brown/yellow for a day and then they are done. no flashy show at all :/

I started my green thumbing late summer this year on my apartment porch balcony area and my zucchini plant that grew so big right before the zucchini began to show..died :( lol, I think I gave it too much fertilizer.. it was my first attempt at planting and growing anything from the seeds itself. I grow scallions, basil, thyme, and bokchoy. But it's getting cold now here in Chicago. 49 at night feels like 42 and high 50's in the daytime until Summer decides to pop up one odd day again! You said refresh the garden here we leave the gardens for the bugs and the birds better in them and we don’t clean them out until there is other food for the bugs in the birds in late spring don’t know if you know that if you do that’s good too🥰❤️😘
I know what you mean. I agree it’s better to let nature do it’s thing, it helps with biodiversity. Unfortunately my lease dictates we keep it looking a certain way. Just another motivation for me to find my dream property that I can call my own and do my own thing!

Lovely to see you enjoying all that is great about Autumn. I love the earthy smell and the feeling of an early chill in the air that comes with autumn (which I miss here in sub-tropical Qld, Aus!!!) so I piggyback on your walks and the pleasure you take from this season. It made me smile to see you choose a plant pot the same warm yellow as your jumper 😅. Bet you make a great pumpkin soup... Thanks for 'joining me' in enjoying the autumn :) Another interesting fact - Scotland is apparently not a fan of pumpkin...can't find canned pumpkin or anything similar in the stores. I had to buy a pumpkin and will chop it up to bake my pumpkin pie which is one of my favorites. Pumpkin muffins too.
When we first moved to the Tassie highlands I had this dream of my timber cottage draped in trailing roses, what I didn't realise was POSSUMS! They eat everything. Then I thought, "daffodils pop up through the lawn, I'll plant irises and tulips and in the spring I'll have beautiful bulbs everywhere! Nope, roos dug them up and ate them not long after planting them. I have discovered that possums don't eat wisteria, so have some young plants growing up the house poles. We have a large vege garden. We have 4 varieties of plums and about 20 espaliered apple and pear trees which do well, as does the large berry patch. The vege garden is fenced and heavily fortified with electricity and all the fruit trees have to be netted or parrots will come in and clean up the lot overnight. We have a very short growing season. We had 3 La Nina years in a row during which it wasn't even worth trying to grow veges as the temperatures would oscillate between mid 20s, to low 30s celsius and then drop down to like 10 degrees for 2 days. We are now in El Nino and have bought two new huge water tanks so looking forward to a big year in the vege garden.
So basically you are a warrior level gardener!! 😂 💪🏻🌶️
@@sarahinscotland It's a team sport - my husband does all the heavy stuff, I do the planting, picking and preserving. It's insect repellent year round - midges in the summer, leeches all year, yikes!
Are you sure the garlic will survive in a pot in Scotland? Will not survive in Denmark, I think of a pot being above the ground “in the Air” and not having the benefit of the warmth from the Ground beneath.
No I’m not sure 😅 it’s an experiment. But I don’t have ground to plant it. My side garden where I grow some flowers and dill only has dirt a few inches deep before it’s completely stones. So for now I can only use pots for veg. I did buy a little “dome” to put over the plants to see how it goes!
@@sarahinscotland I don't think you'll have a problem. Your court yard is pretty small and protected and the walls store heat so you should be good.
Ahh your videos are so gorgeous and relaxing. Autumn is also my favorite, with the temperatures turning crisper and the foliage changing colors. I managed to get out for a hike last week, and there's something so magical about seeing all the golden hues and the occasional leaves falling and twirling in front of you. I've had less time to paint recently, so getting to squeeze in a small sketch while hearing about your cooking and gardening adventures has been a true delight! Thank you for sharing this with us
We suddenly had TONS of rain, almost 3 days straight and now everything is flooding. It was kinda scary. But hopefully we will get a break and be able to enjoy a bit of autumn colors soon!

Yep it's just the Cairngorm ski center car park but take the trail towards Ben Macdui and you'll soon cross the Allt Coire an t-Sneachda. You can do a shorter 6 mile loop from Stob Coire an t-Sneachda to Cairn Gorm. Or longer if you add Ben Macdui

Hey Sarah! Autumn is definitely my favorite time of year! From someone who makes everything from scratch, you can make your own Ranch dressing! I do it all the time. You get to control the ingredients and make as little or as much as you'd like. I'm a homesteader at heart. I can't have a garden where I am, but I can grow a few herbs in pots. I love supporting my local farmer and putting it up for the winter. I'm happy you'll be doing this!
That's true - I can figure out how to make it after this jar is empty. It's yummy, not just on salad but lots of things!

It’s so pretty in the Cairngorms. The trail I was on leads to Cairn Gorm but I took a detour and was happy where I ended up ☺️
A detour well worth it then!
