I saw the Neverending Story in theatres as a 9 or 10 year old, and must have watched it hundreds of times on VHS, and DVD and have introduced it to countless friends over the years. Why? What makes it great? The protagonist is a young boy (Bastian) or barely a teen (Atreyu) but it pulled no punches. Gmork is terrifying. Artex succumbing in the swamp is heart-breaking. The Empress' plea to Bastian to hear her while he still doubts and her crumbling empire is almost completely non-existent. This wasn't a silly, for-kids movie, despite it's comic moments, or young protagonists. This movie showed me that determination, hard work, and the refusal to believe a task was impossible, even for a kid, no matter how terrifying the forces which might oppose, gave me the license to believe in myself and follow my ' impossible quest' until it wasn't impossible, it was reality. For every one person in my life who supported my ballet training I had ten more telling me it wouldn't work out, I needed to focus on grades at school, and that it was fine when I was young but when would I focus on getting a 'real' job..... I danced professionally (National Ballet of Canada soloist, guest principal artist in Japan, and still perform after 33 years with my original company Opera Atelier since my debut in 1986 at 9y/old). If NEStory had been trite, toned down, 'for kids', it wouldn't have had the impact on a young boy who wanted to fly beyond the borders set him by the 'practical concerns' of the adults in my life. Anything is impossible if you think it is. The Neverending Story was a film that showed me to see beyond and that no quest, however daunting, can be fulfilled provided nay-sayers are ignored and the worst days, the ones where succumbing to failure seems compelling, even if beloved ones are succubing all around you breaking your heart, you persevere. Because Atrayu could.
still one of the best movies ever filmed , and I also kind like the old school 80s style where there are no computer effects in the movie and still it looks great and even better than many computer supported "modern" movies.
I adore this movie. Thank you for sharing the story behind it and the music. I still have the cassette but i don't have a player. I get why the movie brought you solace. Sorry about your mom's passing. To me it meant the possibility of never stop dreamming and believing. I Loved the book and the illustrations. Every chapter started with a letter of the alphabet in order. I think that what the sequels missed is the Journey of Bastian (o Sebastian) to find himself, his true identity (his way back home), and the symbolism of the characters like Artrax, Falcor, Atreyu, The Princess and even the balance of the polarities that the Auryn represents. Loved the video, and Loved that you gave visibility to all the amazing actors not only to the protagonists. Thank you so much.
I was so shocked when I saw the movie the first time (as a child) - we stopped watching and continued a week later. Then again getting scared to hell when this creepy wolf shows up. But overall I have very fond memories and the book (I read it afterwards) is really great.
Yeah the stuff of childhood nightmares!! The gomork was very impressive in its day and still packs a punch ! Thanks for the comment and for watching 🙏👍
Awesome collection of information about the video which was such a big deal among young audiences many years ago! Back in the day when it was OK to have such scene with horse in a kids movie....
Again, another great flick I failed to see at my local Cannon theatre in Canterbury. Like "The Karate Kid", I had to content myself with home video rental. There were so many movies being churned out during that decade, so much creativity. Take "The Breakfast Club" in Summer 1985, a complete flop in the UK (and in mainland Europe), only remained a couple of weeks in theatres, could not compete against "Police Academy 2" or "Witness". Yet today considered a classic....
+Truthseeker1515 such a shame you missed out on the cinematic experience vhs pan and scan was the poor experience we had to endure in the 80s thank god for Blu-ray 👍 yes a truly great time for movies
I think this isn't a movie review.... its more of a "story behind the movie" or something. I can't remember the story anymore but this brings a lot of emotions in me. I love the theme song.
Lonely Islander thanks for your comment 😎 I like to think of it as a retrospective movie review giving the story behind the story and my thoughts and it’s wonderful movie and that theme tune is a personal favourite 👍 many thanks 🙏
Very underrated video! This movie is really a forgotten classic to newer generations. Years ago I was introduced to the neverending story by my mom, and I loved it. It's become a beloved thing for me and my mom to re-watch this classic every one in awhile 😄
Awesome movie, one of the greats of my childhood. Love the visual effects, the music, the story, etc. After reading Michael Ende's book for the first time years later, I notices that the movie is basically the first half of the book. And it's getting really weird in the second half.
Wonderful review! Came over from our mutual follow on Twitter and subscribed to the channel! Really enjoyed the very informative format and hearing your personal connection with the film! A true family family classic that traumatized me with that swamp of sadness scene hhaha But never actually watched the sequels or tv series.
Great review mate, really interested video mate. I learned so much. Dude this is really good you definitely need more subs dude. All I remember from this movie is that it made me sad, hence why I’ve yet to see it with my little girl.
Thank you 🙏 I really appreciate the comments. Yeah more subs would be great 👍 hopefully come as I get discovered 😉 definitely rewatch it ! You won’t be sad 😊
The movie is fantastic but the novel is outstanding. It's got two lectures: one is a fantasy tale, and the other is a very dark adult and philosophical story about the loss of identity. As other Ende's novels, is not a kids novel, but an adult novel with kids in it. That is why he was so pissed off with the movie and the awards that he got for best kids novels. Momo is another example of a complex theme in a story with kids, that many schools, wrongly made children to read. The Neverending Story is an amazing novel, so underrated, I guess because is not rooted in american society. I have got the special edition of the book, with the text in green and red.
*Spoilers ahead!* There are fantasy movies where a person from the real world goes to another land. There are fantasy movies that only take place in another land. THE NEVERENDING STORY tries and fails to mix both. It starts by introducing a normal kid named Bastian Balthazar Bux and his everyday life. When he starts reading the title book, the movie shows us a warrior named Atreyu from the world of Fantasia without really introducing him. It's a problem because we have to follow the adventures of the least interesting character among these two. Now, all of this was a set-up for a plot twist: The events of the book are real and are happening at the same time as they're being read. It was a good surprise, but it wasn't worth the 75 minutes of boredom. Also, the climax feels over-dramatic. Well, not from Fantasia's side, but our world's side. Bastian can save Fantasia from destruction simply by saying a name. He knows that he's against the clock, but he wastes time doubting if it's all real (even though seconds before he seemed sure about it) and, when he finally decides to do it, he shouts out the window during a storm. It would've been faster if he had remained sit and had simply said it (or even whispered it). I know it wouldn't have been epic, but logic is more important than theatricality. Noah Hathaway and Barret Oliver's performances and good, while Tami Stronach's is great. Klaus Doldinger and Giorgio Moroder's music score is good only whenever an orchestra is used (which is luckily most of the time). The electronic instruments don't fit with the atmosphere. This is more obvious with the boring theme song. The animatronics used for the creatures look very real, but the way in which their mouth movements don't match the dialogue is as distracting as those books where written text accompanies the pictures. What's that? The pictures are actually accompanying the text? But reading is boring, yo! 4/10 THE NEVERENDING STORY PART II: THE NEXT CHAPTER 3/10 THE NEVERENDING STORY PART III replaces its predecessors' epic scope and sense of wonder with pandering humour. However, everything is so cheesy (especially the very last thing Bastian does on screen) and ridiculous that it was hard for me to stop watching, which was sort of a relief after the previous installments bored me. Jason James Richter and Melody Kay's performances are good. Jack Black is funny and threatening enough to make his character the most memorable villain of this franchise, despite being just a human. The songs are played at very random moments. The only time where it seems like a song is being played on purpose is when a creature called The Rock Biter sings Steppenwolf's BORN TO BE WILD. Since it's the only musical number in the entire trilogy, it feels out of place. Even if it had been used in a stand-alone movie, it would still be stupid. Why would someone happy to be a family man sing about rebellion and freedom?! Especially while his kid is with him?! Is it the kind of musical number that you can enjoy if you close your eyes and just listen? No, because Gary Martin has to sing bad on purpose in order to achieve the character's voice. Apparently, the makers believed that this scene would become so iconic that they re-play it during the end credits... as if it represented the rest of the movie. No grade (best bad movie)
I’d be up for a Netflix series remake. The Dark Crystal series really impressed me and a dark fantasy version of the never ending story would be beautiful. The corruption, the betrayal of friends, the burning of the ivory tower. It‘s ending with atreyu forever doing battle with every story Bastion ever created forever.
Many thanks for the review. I just watched the movie again after reading the book recently and I was surprised it coveres the first and the second movie. Thought the story for the second one was completely made up but it explains the really nice set design of the sequel. Though that movie was much weaker than the first.
the harry potter - troll connection is hilarious. it couldn't be any clearer that JKR ripped off the entire concept and yet she's the billionaire. if you ever thought our legal system is fair and impartial, you're out of your mind.

Jeremy you perfectly summerized the greatness that makes this movie!
Brilliantly said.
You let the Swamps Of Sadness scene play out. So sad. And yes, I still cry when I watch that part of the film.
