For what it's worth, most of the 40K books aren't connected to one another. There are a few series within the overall body of work, but a lot are just one shots. In the event you decide to set fire to your remaining free time, the best on ramps are the Eisenhorn trilogy (sold as an omnibus) which shows "civillian" life in the Imperium or the Ciaphus Kane series (I believe the first omnibus is called Ciaphus Kane: Hero of the Imperium) where actual normal human soldiers encounter a variety of the different threats in the 40K universe.
I feel like most while the 40K books are treated like the Star Wars EU, no effort whatsoever was made to fit them all together like was with the SWEU. And most are more like the Star Trek EU, where 99% of the books are just official stand alone fan fiction.
Henry Cavill is honesty the perfect man to play Caiphas Cain too. He's got the look and personality (and sense of humor) to actually nail that character not sure that's the best place to start a Warhammer Media franchise, unfortunately, since it does tend to more the comical side of the universe, which may give people the wrong idea out of the gate and make future, grimmer installments harder to sell Personally i hope he starts with Gaunt's Ghosts. Which would be quite fitting for a number of reasons.
It is entirely possible to do a story about the inquisitors, ciaphas cain or isaac eisenhower, basically just detectives in 40 K and keep it fairly cheap.
Henry has a wide range of warhammer 40k characters he could be interested in playing as. Also practical effects would do very well in live action especially with some of the warhammer 40k cosplayers out there.

Not even into Warhammer. But I wish him the best because i love Henry, and it's a rare coincidence when the producers are fans of the source material 🥺
There are a few books that will get you knee-deep into the 40K universe and "Grimdark" vibe well enough to know the universe. I recommend these three: 1. "The Founding" the first omnibus of the Gaunt's Ghosts (First and Only, Ghostmaker, Necropolis). Covers the exploits of the Imperial Guard Regiment the "Tanith First and Only" after the destruction of their home planet; 2. "Helsreach" from the Space Marine Battles series, this is a standalone novel covering the Space Marines and other forces during the desperate siege of Helsreach Hive from the Orks; and 3. "Sons of Dorn" standalone novel; tracks the journey of aspirants to become Space Marines of the Imperial Fists chapter.
I thought he was driven off over the female custodes, and refusing to change anything just for esg? Last I heard, a month ago or so was that the deal didn't finalize.
The thing is, there are PLENTY of Warhammer 40k stories that DON'T dely so heavily on VFX. Adapting Gaunt's Ghosts would have SOME big budget scenes, but a LOT of it is essentially military drama. Adapting Eisenhorn again could be COMPARATIVELY budget friendly, as much of it can be urban thriller/horror/mystery. There are SO MANY choices that aren't "Space Marines in huge battles" that are ACTUALLY more compelling for the purposes of a show.
Oh. Well. Somethings are fate, but I think that Amazon was likely pushed into a corner. If Henry did that? Fuck, I've only got even MORE respect for him. I will absolutely watch this.
Once you have the basics of the universe down, I would recommend the Ciaphas Cain books as a starting to point. They are fun to read, easy to digest, have greats characters, and don't delve too deep into lore if I remember correctly.
Ive been into the lore for a couple of years now. Mostly through videos and shorts. And honestly, I'd say the show will have to be a simple look at the culture of the imperium of man. Perhaps a pov of a guardsman as the story slowly goes on you get hints of an ork invasion, and the Adeptus Astartes coming to aid the planet.
I'm a little skeptical given how Amazon has handled certain adaptations (*coughs in Rings of Power and Wheel of Time*), but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious to see what he does
And so Just Some Guy begins his perilous journey into Warhammer 40K lore. Just stick to the Wiki pages, he says to himself, far too many books to read to catch up. Someone notes not that you don't need to read every last book to be informed about the setting, just as you don't need to read every comic ever published to be a comic book fan, but Just Some Guy stands his ground... until a friend loans or gives him a novel just to give him a taste. Maybe a book like Eisenhorn or one of the early Gaunts Ghosts novels, explaining that those stories are self contained and act as stand alone sci fi series just as well as 40K novels. For a couple of weeks that book just sits innocently on the shelf, until one night, perhaps with nothing else to do or just out of curiosity, Just Some Guy picks it up to see what all the fuss is about... Many, many 40K fans have a story like that about how they first got started in the hobby. It is very easy to find yourself swept away in this fictional world, and before you know it you have a books shelf full of 40K books. Maybe it stops there, or maybe you need another shelf for your rulebooks, lore and game supplements, and - scariest of all - you might start modelling and gaming, and then the 'plastic crack' addiction well and truly has you in its unrelenting grip. On the upside, it is all a huge amount of fun. We will just have to wait and see if Just Some Guy is bitten by the hobby bug and gets to find out first hand.
Rather than reading every single book, just buy a core rulebook as it's a good start. To make things more complex, there's 2 settings, 40k and then the fantasy/AoS setting too
