I have literally learned just about everything from this guy, but this video made me feel better about my relationship with compound and mud. I could feel the frustration as he tried to work with the hot mud. I thought those issues only happened to newer guys like me, but I can see sheetrock is a fickle trade.

"Baker" is shorthand for "baker pad" which looks similar, but it's typically smaller and made of stainless, and used in the kitchen to stage the bakeries before/after baking.
Paper tape only for corners, fibafuse for all other applications, we use the Level 5 & Beroxpert skimming blades to and are a must have tools, great show Jeff.
I bought a $150 fold-up scaffold from that same company. Perfect height to work on even 9ft ceilings. Skimcoated my whole house on that thing and now it's hiding in the 1ft of space behind my furnace. Love it.

You're truly a master at this trade and out of everyone I have seen on YT, you're techniques and methods are simply the best (screw those mud pans!). We use a couple of the baker's when we have the room. I like to put it low so that way I have a table on wheels or don't have to bend over to get the mid or paint. Makes it great if you got back or knee problems.
I'm an electrical supply wholesaler. Copper up 100% in the past year, PVC conduit up 300% in last 45 days. Circuit Breakers and resi load-centers on longest lead times I've seen in 35 years of doing business. So-called renewable energy projects, especially solar mixed with storage are pushing materials demand up in California.
I scraped the mortar and tuck pointed a 25x90’ 120 year old brick wall by stacking three of those bakers on top of each other. Outside. Through wind and rain. In a public alleyway. Took me 3 months. Every day after work, nights and weekends. The whole town watched as they drove by day after day. Thought I was crazy. Now I have a new wall and saved about 50 grand along the way. Couldn’t have done it without my stacking bakers.

Loving those tools! As an aside, I found the hawk too much to handle for my weak wrists. A pan is easier to hold for long periods of time and doesn't put me out of commission the next day. More difficult to pull mud out of and keep clean as I go, but less pain is worth it.
Great video, as always. I do a bit of wall repairs when painting and you convince me of buying one of those Level 5 blades (not as large though because they are expensive).
Your probably not going to appreciate this to much with your 30+ years off experience but might I suggest when filling a large area your go to mud should be a hot mud. When you worked the ceiling to try and get it at least a bit straighter make the mud thicker. From the video it was far to wet and made to easy to dig it out more than wanted. And just on a side note. Muds on a painted surface always take a reasonably longer time to dry than on roar board were the moisture gets absorbed by the board.. A good trick when making hot mud in a pale/bucket is spray it with cooking oil (canola, cheap)first. When the mud drys it will just slide out leaving you with a clean bucket so your not wasting gallons/liters off water washing them and if you forget or the mud goes off before you get to it you don't loose the bucket. Even the next day. A spray can off canola oil is cheap and can save money and water.

I just worked with drywall for my very first time about a month ago. Did skim coating on my bathroom. Landed up with 4 layers of mud trying to get it even and bubble free. What a learning process. But I did get a 24 inch squeegee that helped tremendously. I used a roller to get the mud on the walls and ceiling, tried the 8 inch drywall knife to smooth it out. It was horrible. If you have any suggestions on getting rid of bubbles I would love to hear them. And the bubbles showed up on the third coat, not the first or second, there was no paint showing by this point so I still don’t know what caused them. Tiny pinholes. Millions of them. It was bad. Anyway thank for all of your videos! I am learning a lot from you!
Wondering if you learned why skim coating bubbles occurred, and how to prevent and the easiest way to get rid of them? I hope you were happy with the results in the end, cheers!

I have had one of those for about a year now and it is brilliant, but I took steps to stop my girlfriend from finding it by popping my coat over it, now she has seen your video she will expect me to get the plastering done in half the time
Is this the case? Jeff is also from Canada? Why is using the clinching tool, not enough to hold the metal beads? What about using spray adhesive as well as clinching?
My boss showed me that crimping tool years ago, its definitely the way to go, also i never used screws i used 3MM spray glue and you spray the corner bead then the wall and let it get tacky then set it in place, works great
I thought you said NOT to use those orange 5 gallon buckets to mix mud, as the mixing blade flaked off tiny pieces of it and it showed up in the mud on the wall?
That baker looks so much better than a ladder in another way... Climbing up and down one for hours murders your knees and standing on a ladder's 3 or 4 inch rung absolutely MURDERS your feet!

Since you say that you don't know why they invented a mud pan, true journeyman drywallers can use both, and, that is also why they make a tape rack and a pan holder, makes taping by hand really efficient...🤔 Hmmm seems like you would know that though....

I have an access holes cut out in the drywall but they are all different sizes and would like to get them to a standard size so I can buy a clean looking access panel. Can’t go bigger on them because they are next to the ceiling or adjacent wall. Is there anyway to patch the edges of the drywall to shrink hole? Say 7.5x14.25 to a 6x12
Please help me understand - in two of your previous videos you were totally against the corner bead tool (your first recommended screws, your second you recommend the nails). Now you’re endorsing the corner bead tool. Why the change? Just easier for novices or did you have a change of heart?
Agreed. Hurt my soul. My favorite tape has a few slices in it from that though. Which in turn translates to a few slices in my fingers lol. Lesson learned
I can’t really find where to leave you a message, so I’ll make it public here. I cut a section out of a finished ceiling to put in a light fixture and a switch. The old ceiling appears to be 1/2 inch drywall with about an 1/8 inch of plaster? and then a swirl texture. I replace the cutout section with 1/2 inch drywall and now I need to fill in the extra 1/8 inch and then try to match the texture. My question: can I fill in the missing 1/8 inch with all purpose mud, or should I use plaster or that 45 minute stuff you use in this video?
45 minute. It won't shrink like all purpose mud after it dries, you won't have to wait forever for it to dry, it sticks better and you can lay it out thicker without it cracking like all purpose will.

Ad screws to beads. Clinching is not enough for Canada.
Every 12" at the clinch point is enough.
Is this the case? Jeff is also from Canada? Why is using the clinching tool, not enough to hold the metal beads? What about using spray adhesive as well as clinching?
I think I got the point without the sacrifice of a measuring tape, but I'll certainly remember it now.
you should demo no-coat corner beads. that woulda made short work of this i think.

Get a plastic mixing paddle to prevent that
i had a new blade so it was safe.

Does cutting the tape measure count as cutting or measure in cut once measure twice?
Fill up a mud pan then empty it on your hawk, you will quickly learn if it holds as much or not, but of course you should have known that too...🤔
