This is such an important conversation! It's so difficult to have this discussion where I teach (Central NJ). There's no respect for the students and they are treated like they're helpless victims, as if they can't learn or grow. And when initiatives that promote the things you are suggesting are brought up, teachers roll their eyes and go back to their job of effectively being babysitters for their kids. Especially for the black and hispanic students. I hope to find colleagues like you guys as I progress through my career.

Braxton was so right about the impact the teachers really do have. I’ll never forget my love of science came from my teachers and was why I initially went into the medical field. In New York we have these tests called regents. Each year my science teacher that year bet me I couldn’t set a new record for whichever science regent was that year. Safe to say I got 4 $100 red lobster gift cards and set new records each year. I struggled with my weight for a long ass time and my gym teachers in high school helped me with my diet and even came to the school on the weekends to open the weight room so my friends and I could do workouts. It might not alway seem it at the time but teachers that care are more important than they realize.
