Man I hate wasps. I came out to the farm yesterday to mow (Just got my zero turn 😊) and water my seedlings. And….my Burs were dropping!! Thanks for sharing your experiences John.
Jame Nave is about a 9a IIRC in southern California. I have some of his trees that I planted from seed. Me being 8b am not so different temperature wise, but disease wise I am probably worst. I have had a couple die for no apparent reason. Some of the others died due to shading and excessive moisture, but I have some that are coming along. Chestnuts do need full sunlight to produce well and I am taking down trees to allow more sunlight in.
I believe James moved to Missouri from California a few years ago. The seeds I planted are from his time in California though. As you can see, I'm planting an old field so sun exposure isn't a problem for me.
Audio sounds good. All protection is a necessary evil. The amount of maintenance cages require - pruning and less tight mowing - is an issue. I have definitely had die back issues (I think hardening off) with tubes. In a magical world there are no tubes, cages, weeds, voles, insects, deer, and other pests trying and succeeding to kill them while young.
John, you mentioned previously that you would sell chestnut seedlings. I may be interested this year or next depending on when I can prepare my land. I'm in zone 7A. What month would you mail out one-year-old bare root chestnut seedlings this winter? Also, thank you for your informative videos.
Hi - I usually sell out locally every Spring and usually don't ship seedlings these days. One of these days when my kids get bigger & I have more time, I may increase my production of seedlings and start shipping them again.
Top killed trees make excellent graft candidates. Let the resprout grow for a year and then graft the following spring. The vigorous roots produce a much higher percentage of takes for an inexperienced grafter.
Tubes have benefits cages can’t offer - cheaper, easier to install, faster upward growth(very important if you have heavy deer pressure). As I say in the video - no one solution solves every issue.
Harvested my first chestnuts two days ago now I’m enjoying them while watching your video. Another awesome video. Good luck with your harvest.
.
That's pretty cool - eating chestnuts while watching a chestnut video! My harvest will be much less this year but at least I'll have a few. Thanks.
I use a SCAG zero turn mower...absolutely no regrets...love the video
I've heard lots of good things about SCAG. What model did you buy?
Cheetah II...61inch deck
Not cheap but awesome
Audio is great !
Thanks Dan - I'm glad I figured it out.

Which Zero-Turn did you go with?!! Congrats on Burs starting to drop!
@@johnsangl I got the Bad Boy ZT Avenger 54”. Did some mowing today.around the orchard. It’s perfect.
Audio sounds great!
Glad to "hear" it! haha
Sounds great John !
Thanks - glad I finally figured it out!
Every time that I leave a plastic zip-tie sticking out like you have, the deer chew it so much that it has to be cut off. Thanks for the video.
Yep - I have both bear & deer that chew on them. I cut them all off - can't remember if I video'd that part though.

Good sound
Thanks for the feedback. Sorry about the delayed response.
much better thanks
Thanks! I'm not especially electronically-inclined - thank goodness for TH-cam for showing me how to fix it.
Good luck on big buck control
Thanks - I'm looking for the one who is messing up my trees! Season opens next Saturday.
The tubes seem to bake trees down here in the 110°+ Texas summers. Going forward, I’m planning to just use cages.
I can definitely see that happening!!
Audio sounds good.

The first few years are tough years for young trees no doubt!! I do NOT live in the magical world you speak of - haha!

I intend to do just that for my apples. Grafted chestnuts don’t do well in my area according to very experienced grower & scientist, Greg Miller.
Cut that limb!!!!!! Way to go Jon
Can't be afraid to "Trim the Limbs"!
@@johnsangl I cut everything below head high!
audio is a lot better
Thanks! I’m happy I finally figured out a solution!
why not just do the cage from the start tubes are a huge waste of money and time
