    Treasure each moment with your dad, Matt. One day they will end. My dad's odometer ran out at 97, but it still wasn't enough time.
    The truck is less important, but still pretty damn cool!

    Hey Matt, loved this video. (as always).
    TIP.... My old mentor always said, before explaining almost anything..... "Words fail, see diagram". (Not intricate or detailed, just a sketch)
    Love from 'Reading, England'.

    Thanks for sharing.
    Brings back memories of years ago when I did a similar mod on a Model A that I made into a speedster. I needed to shorten the wheelbase about 12”. The torque tube and radius rods were the same as you did but on the driveshaft I remember the Model A had a tapered end where it fit into the rear pinion shaft. I had the machine shop cut a new tapered end instead of doing the sleeve as you did.
    Good memories
    Thank you
    Rollie

    Matt, piecing together the drive shaft and torque tube awesome .. I am guessing the spline coupler ties into the trans.

    I remember my dad installing a pin in the drive shaft of our 47 ford. I think it was a Ford part. It was a hardened pin with a flat sprig that rapped around the coupling.

    Excellent work, I made a new pinion input in my Ford 47 to install an aerial or common cardan, eliminating the torque tube, here in Argentina the kit is not available and if I had to import it it would be very expensive, cordial greetings from Argentina

    Imagine back in the day doing this before chop saws existed...not criticizing, but some things get better. I would not want to try this in my back yard with a hack saw & and a gas welder...

    you made two cuts on the tube and one cut on the shaft. Did you work that extra saw blades width into the measurement? you did not say. Or is there enough slop in the original?

  • @donames6941
    @donames6941 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    18 and 5/8s plus what the blade took out so how thick is your blade (1/8 maybe times 2 cuts)

    i've shortened a couple driveshafts on modern car engine/tranny swaps in my garage, and that was difficult enough to do without needing to have them rebalanced, but to have to do it twice with both the torque tube and the inner driveshaft, and keeping them the same length... lemme just say, you make it look easy. but, that's what experience gets you. the first one is terrifying, but every one after that is less and less scary because you know what to expect, and the mistakes to avoid, until eventually it becomes old hat. how do you get to carnegie hall? practice, practice, practice.

  • @paulmcintyre8894
    @paulmcintyre8894 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    if you put the rear-end on a floor jack the drive shaft won't turn and it should be easer to connect.

    • @virginian7317
      @virginian7317 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@billlewis9740 that's good. It is forged steel, pretty weldable if he preheated the ends before welding.

    Why do you need need to take the sleeve off, couldn’t you just take the 18 5/8 out of the middle ?

    • @IronTrapGarage
      @IronTrapGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can take it out anywhere. This method is easier and because it’s harder to keep the driveshaft aligned/balanced. When cutting in the center.

    Don`t drive this without the radius rods. you will twist the rear & bend/break the torque tube.

    • @jongolliher3806

      I am absolutely sure that Matt is fully aware and will not drive without the wishbone in place!

    I guess the shaft is inside the tube when it breaks. Because it will. 100hp twisting those welds. With about 3-1 reduction so 300hp.
    Cut it and respline. And then heat treat the resplined area.

    • @IronTrapGarage
      @IronTrapGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have numerous cars I’ve done this on with no issue and it’s been the way it’s been done for close to 100 years. The banjo rear generally will break first. Not only is it welded it also is drilled and a pin is installed and welded. In theory you method is stronger for sure. But it isn’t realistic for a DIY budget minded hot rodder.

    • @jongolliher3806
      @jongolliher3806 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with Matt, No worrys about breaking the driveshaft as it has been done this way forever including myself with a full race AV8 roadster. Plus he only has a 21 stud 80hp motor. You need to check your information source. : )

      @grandudetonesnob7107 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm a carpenter, so if you guys ever need to shorten a wooden driveshaft I'll do it and it will be done to SAE 1313 Fubar standards!

    Looks great. Truck engine. Needs a truck transmission. Truck driveshaft. Truck rearend. Engine is a 1937 engine.

    • @jongolliher3806
      @jongolliher3806 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No need of all the truck components that you mentioned. Matt is using a later model car drive line that is more than adequate for his needs. Definitely not a model A driveline!
