    Thanks for the vid. Its basically like the outskirts of London. Drivers are a bit shit there as they can pick up speed

    On occasion I ride that route to work at the university, was nice to see it from a different perspective, I'm usually coming from the train station, mix up my routes this is one of them...

      Thanks for this! I'm also a fan of mixing up the routes. Here's my way home on another day: th-cam.com/video/3RaPlbpB-Ig/w-d-xo.html.

    I live in Edgbaston too and I am a student at Birmingham City University.
    Hearing about the measures the council take to see if traffic calming work should take place is hardly a surprise unfortunately. Birmingham is such a vehicular orientated and dominated city and it seems cycling infrastructure is not thought of and even if it is then it's inconsistent on where it goes. Saying that, I absolutely love the cycling lane on Pershore Rd to Bristol St, we need more of that.

      It's pretty dismal, but I just saw this and it gave me a little hope. Stay safe out there! th-cam.com/video/VjGgHBd7RnU/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=BirminghamCityCouncil

      Thank you! You should film and post your own ride. Let me know if you do: it would be nice to see. Stay safe out there!

    I'm in the centre of Birmingham right now. There is so little provision for cyclists! We've parked against some railings after walking 15 minutes looking for somewhere to park our cycles. There are plenty of cycles for hire in splendid racks, but no racks for us. Also, it is very unclear where we may and may not cycle. So disappointing after a splendid cycle journey by the canal.

      This sounds representative. It's so sad to think about how very little has changed since I recorded that video. Just more cyclists and pedestrians injured and killed because the city refuses to reallocate space from cars toward other modes of mobility. I'm sorry you have had this experience, but I can say that a growing number of us are building a movement to change this lamentable state of affairs. Thanks for the comment!

    Awful that condition about 9 injuries. I agree with your critique that the design of roads in Bham is inherently aggressive towards road users who are not operating motor vehicles by being apparently designed just for the convenience and speed of motorists. Many more roads could have less parking and more protected bike lanes.

      It seems such a basic injustice that the mode of transport that causes the most harm gets by far the most priority. It's depressing, but maybe sharing videos of our experiences of riding in Birmingham can be one tiny step toward changing things for the better. I suspect that there's more of us who want a fairer allocation of road space. Let me know if you post a video yourself!

    I've only done this commute by car as when I cycle to the same uni I take the canal most of the way. Looks nice to cycle on.

      Thanks for this! I'm currently visiting Vancouver where they have a real netork of bike lanes in different parts of the city and it's reminding me of how much more we could do in Birmingham to make riding on the roads feel safer for more people. You might be comfortable riding on the roads already and just prefer the canals, but if you want to ride roughly this same route but would feel safer cycling with another person at first, I'd be happy to meet up to cycle this together in the autumn. Stay safe!

      @@johnjmunro Don't worry, I've been cycling for 7 years now so I'm experienced and also a brummie born and bred! 😊 I'm always optimistic and advocate for better infrastructure here, so I do what I can. I'll see you around!

      @@insertyourquarters All excellent to hear! I feel like the voice for positive change in how our roads are organized is getting louder, and it's especially effective when it's led by people like yourself who know Birmingham much better than I do. Tom Flood (@tomflood1) is going to be visiting Birmingham 12-13 October, so that should hopefully be a big moment in the public conversation around this stuff in the West Midlands. Something to look forward to!

    So great to ride with you, John! I think I recognised a junction at around the 7m30s mark from one of your tweets 😂. Look forward to seeing more

      Nice to have you along, Ed! And nice spotting at the junction. It is indeed one I've highlighted before. I'll need to film another of these commutes in the sunshine - and with my camera at a better angle!

    …interesting vid… Birmingham looks leafy…

    • @johnjmunro
      @johnjmunro  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is. We need to do more to claim back some of the public space that's been overrun by cars, but it's also a lovely city in many ways. I recommend a visit!

    Hi John, I'm Snejo, an international student at Aston University. As I'm new to this country, could you please help me to find friends in cycling??

    • @johnjmunro
      @johnjmunro  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Snejo, and welcome to Birmingham! Here's three ideas:
      1. Next Saturday, 2 April at 10 AM, there's going to be a celebration of cycling at the lovely Borrow Shop in the Jewellery Quarter. I'll be there with my kids, and if you can make it hopefully it'll give us a chance to meet! www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bikes-bromptons-the-borrow-shop-tickets-289835534887
      2. The great people at EcoBirmingham do a cyclist breakfast every Wednesday morning: ecobirmingham.com/product/bike-breakfast-club/
      3. Keep an eye on Dom Whiting. I believe Birmingham is due another visit from him before long, which will bring out hundreds of cyclists: twitter.com/domwhiting
