Hunger (2008): Script To Screen

Hunger (2008) is the directoral debut of Steve Mcqueen. The film follows the IRA prisoners of 'the maze prison' during the 1981 hunger strike led by Bobby Sands. The middle of the film features a 25 minute dialogue scene between Bobby and a priest, the first 17 minutes of the scene are one unbroken wide shot.

Why is Bobby shirtless?

They were angry about wearing mandated 'civilian style clothes'instead of their own. I think it's a mixture of not wanting to wear those clothes and playing into religious imagery and martyrdom.
