    I suggest a few variations here; I bought the competitive brand because it’s silver vs gray (only a personal taste), but the major difference here is that the Samsung EVO is better due to its technology build that allows to operate faster & with a longer lifespan than the QVO SSD. I picked up a 2 TB drive at B&H for $169.

      You can easily store your music and movie files plus all your other files on an external drive USB3.1, USBC or TB. You will see no effect. For the home users and mostly professional users, the high speed of the Apple SSD is useful only for booting and awaking the computer plus launching app. That’s why Apple receive so many critics from independant reviewers to put a very expensive solution in the less expansive consumer products. For Intel Macs and as add-on in a M1 MacMini box, a standard also speedy NVMe connector to install a standard SSD would be fine for the consumer products (MBA, MBP13, MacMini i3+i5). NVMe are near the same price than the SATA use in this video and near the actual Apple SSD speed. The market sold them a lot less than Apple. Today, Crucial 1TB P5 at 150$ or P2 enough for 95% of mac users at only 105$ vs 600$ by Apple (you have to add the factory SSD you already pay in the basic computer about 200$, difference between the 256GB-512GB). Also, in a computer box as the Mac mini, they can add a SATA connector for a second drive or an option for a second NVMe, it have enough space inside. But Tim Cook don’t want that people maintain or upgrade themself their computer. He prefer that you buy a new one ... save the planet he said??? The user who needs the ultra speed of Apple SSD is professionnal video editing (4K, 8K with many features and all day long working), some software programmers, some analysts using large datas and simulations, 3D editing and other in the same range. These professionnals don’t buy a MacBook Air, a MacBook (not Pro) 13 and few can use a boosted MacMini i7 with external GPU. The M1 chips seems to do a very nice job in the future for more usage but not now for the very few power users. Why put a Ferrari motor in a Fiat 500?

    It's a very good and cheap solution only need to take into consideration that via this dock you will get a read\write speed at around 400\500 mb\s and if you use an internal MAC storage it should give you something around 2500\3000 mb\s which means - 5,6 times faster.

    The slow SSD speed is not Apple M1 issue, it is because of the cheap USB-C hub, that don't have the USB-C control chips inside, they are using the USB 2.0 chips with USB-C port, tricky right? I know this because I saw many bad comments about this hub in the Chinese forum, and one of the engineer teared down it and discovered the cheap chip set inside!!!!

    • @LamarMK
      @LamarMK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really, because I tried my regular SanDisk Extreme SSD connected directly to the thunderbolt port and the speeds are still the same same, basically cut in half. I’ve even tried connecting the SSD directly with a SATA cable and the results are the same. So it’s definitely an M1 issue.

    Great video, love your presentation and tone.
    Just to let you know, i have 16 of those Samsung 870 QVO(2TB), and while for me, being QLC doesnt cause many issues. For most people, they might be upset if they didnt know these drives slow down to 70MB/s, say when copying photos from an SD card after a long day of shooting. At first you probably wont notice this, but i have a laptop with a 2TB 860 QVO(though the 870 has the same issue) and it started to slow down significantly after i filled it to ~1.3TB, You'll also see it slow down right out of the box if you copy more than 70GB to the drive at once, and dont allow it to purge that SLC buffer
    I feel that most people wont run into this slow down very often, but when it does happen it will be slower than an old hard drive. like when i am doing a full sync from my old server, to my new server, the SSDs slow down the transfer, because once they hit the SLC cache buffer, they slow down to be slower than the spinning disks on my old server. But this is a very rare instance for me, as to reach this buffer limit on my server, i would have to write over 1TB at 40G speeds.
    And note, that this ONLY happens when writing to the disk, if you're reading from the disk, you can read 300TB without it slowing down noticably.

    • @LamarMK
      @LamarMK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you man! You got 16 of them?! 😱
      I don’t notice any slowdown with mine, but I’m not transferring 70GB at a time. I transfer all my video files to the SSD and edit them from the SSD, then export them from the video editor to the SSD and upload them to TH-cam from the SSD. It all depends on the use case of the drive, but for my workflow it works good enough without me noticing any extreme slowdowns.

    I fully understand to buy the cheapist M1 Mini mac and add external disk. Here is my problem. I have mini mac late 2014 with SSD 1 T (I changed the original myself) Now I have far too much data and programs on my old mini mac. How can I transfer all my data to a smaller mini mac and external disk.? I have asked Apple support and they were not sure. New subscriber from Denmark

      What you can do is get a 2 TB external SSD like this, and connect it to your 2014 Mac Mini with a USB to SATA cable, and transfer all your files to it.
      Then connect that external SSD to your new Mac Mini like how I did in this video, and you’ll have all your files, plus some extra storage.

      @@LamarMK Hi. I was refering to the SSD Samsung to go into the external hub because my imac is running way too slow esp. with some programs. They advised me to uninstall a virus app which I did but did not help. i had so much lag then my comp crashed. i only had it app. 3 months. really disappointed. I have tons of storage, nothing opening at startup, everything is up to date. Lamar it's just so unreal that I purchased this for work yet I can't. The Affinity photo program is 3red party and 100% legit yet they said that is probably the issue. It is not the Nikon one does the same thing. Also Affinity is M1 iMac ready compatible. Just before the comp crashed I heard the fan go on. I touched the front was a bit warm but nothing hot. So I was advised to buy a SSD card to get a faster CPU. is that SSD read and write speeds similar to the internal storage on the M1 mac mini

    • @I999-g2s
      @I999-g2s 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not even close.
      The internal read and write speeds are well over 2000 MB/s, or more than 7x faster.
      But, an internal 256GB is plenty for software (fast access needed), and files, photos and videos can be kept on the external 1TB - this is a setup I have had on my iMac for a few years.
      Whilst I’m not entirely sure about this, Mac OS does not implement TRIM for external SSD’s, so after a while (exactly how long depends upon quality of drive and usage), the external drive becomes really slow and needs to be replaced.
      Even allowing for this periodic expense, the insane rip-off priced Apple charges for internal memory/SSD pricing still doesn’t make any sense.

    • @LamarMK
      @LamarMK  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @DIY JIM No, the read/write speeds are not as fast as the internal SSD. But as @I999 said, files and photos etc are perfect for storing on the external SSD. 👍

    • @LamarMK
      @LamarMK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The slower speed is unique to Macs with the M1 Chip. Even connecting the external drive directly to the USB-C port the speeds are cut in half. We just have to wait and see how Apple addresses this.
