Hey Don, I have been using cinnamon for ants around my hives for years. It's the only thing I know to use for sugar ants. I had ants actually make a small nest on top of an inner cover last year. the ants were in the hive too. I used cinnamon directly on the ant nest. Within 2 hours, the ants were totally gone. The ones I did see were dead that I had put cinnamon directly on.
I was concerned about ants for a while but after a couple of years messing around and trying (unsuccessfully) to keep them out of the hive I noticed that they never actually bothered the bees, and the bees really didn't care about them. They just come in and eat the sugar water that spills. That being said, if they become a problem, this information will be very useful.
Don...big, big fan here. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. What can you tell us about the use of diatomaceous earth to control ants? Also: do you know of, or sell plans for, an "ant moat" that can be filled with diatomaceous earth to keep ants from reaching the hive? Thank you, Sir...you have been a great resource. By the way, I bought your plans for the "no-drown" bee feeder and so far so good. NO drowned bees!
Another thing you can do, if you're willing to kill ants is to go purchase regular cornmeal, sprinkle fairly heavily around your hives and across the ants trails. *If* you see where the ant hills are located, sprinkle cornmeal around that as well. Ants will bring the cornmeal into the hive, feed themselves and their young, but they don't benefit from the cornmeal at all. What happens is it fills their bellies with food, but causes them to starve. Killing off the anthill, hopefully totally if you're lucky. This is how I've taken care of any anthills that have shown up in my yard for years now. =) ~Be Blessed
Sir, thank you for your love and passion for the bee. I have been watching your videos for a while and didn't realize how much info you have given. This season I am going go for it and do my 1st hive. A million thank yous Sir.
Thank you. Worked like magic. Ants are running circles around the stand and will not cross the cinnamon line., Those trapped on the hive side of the line are being picked off by the bees. Product must be pure and real Cinnamon. Discount brands are not real cinnamon.
What does the cinnamon do to repel ants? Confusing as to where & how it was applied. I like videos that actually SHOW something is being done rather than just talk.
Really? It's not rocket science! Sprinkle some on the inside cover if that's what you use, otherwise sprinkle it on the frames and bottom boards. Better yet though, is avoid getting ants in the hive. Four bolts offset from the corners of your bottom board and sitting in cat food cans filled with soapy water or mineral oil will stop the ants dead in their tracks.
Cinnamon can kill the mites. Fat bee man, what will happen if you sprinkle cinnamon power over the frames? as you said it won't kill the bees, right? and it would kill the mites -- this is the fact. Then, very cheap environmentally friendly cure can be found against the mites right? Please let me know your opinion. Thanks in advance ~

Don...Mr. Common Sense. Thank you sir!
Love it! Fixing to rename my yard cinnamon lane, good grief I've been fighting ants since day one! New to it and learning the "Hard Way"! Thanks!

Hey Don, Will this work on fire ants as well? Thanks again for sharing!

I really like the way you are to the point. No b.s. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians is not a good thing.
no it wont use it on hive top feeders or inner covers.
Don
May I ask why you do not use an inner cover?
Why don't you use inner covers?
Shoot, Cayenne would get them dancing??LOL-No? :)

I live in the desert, Im thinking about adding a styrofoam cover on top of the lid to help keep off the beating sun.
Bad Idea ?
the things you can learn for free.======lol
Don
I just tried it, the ants scattered!
Ok I'm concerned about the ants again. The ants didn't care about it.
I tried it, didn't stop the ants in my area. They walked across it like it wasn't nothing.
califrontiers cinnamon mixed or weird ants
I don't use them because there is a place for ants to hide and roaches too.
Don
