this guy has the weirdest logic my engine is making noise so now I'm forced to abandon my car ?!? worst case you just leave the car in the parking lot and they tow it to impound then when impound calls you to tell them they have you car you say you don't want it anymore and they get papers for it and send it off to auction or scrap. scratching the VIN off is super fishy because now it looks stolen and cars have multiple hidden VINs so whoever towed it would probably call the police and they would investigate and wonder why it was never reported stolen !?
Bad lucky would be buying a Japanese or Korean car and it breaking down. Buying a US or European made car and having it break down is just par for the course, especially one bought from a junkyard.

Your dad can fax the title to scrapyard to prove its yours. That will be enough for them to take it until your dad can mail them the actual title. But hindsight is 20/20.
