for the table, while size may make sense for difficulty for some creatures, you can have extremely dangerous small animals (think like a venomous teleporting honey badger) and if the monster can cast, then it's up in the air. Other examples would be blue whales would be way less scary to fight than killer whales. Maybe have the monster be foreshadowed so the players have to use what they heard from npcs to recognize a creature and its abilities. Scale is still the most reliable guideline though.
I like the idea, but I would probably change the name of the magic skill to "Arcane" or "Magick" . Lore speaks too much of knowledge which overlaps too strongly with Int in my opinion. And thus is confusing. Calling it Arcane would also obviously fit with the name of the ttrpg broadly.
meh "arcane" and "magick" is too generic, I have a suggestion The game's name is "Arcane ugly" a very weird fantasy setting The perfect name for the magical stat would be "Ugliness" or just "Ugly" This just makes sense for me, in this super weird world, the uglier or weirder you are, the more magic you have
@@mattheusfinco7050 That's a good suggestion, too. I know what you mean about Magick and Arcane. I guess my issue is mostly with the term Lore which I think mischaracterises the ability entirely.
@Gar “Imagination”, “spiritualism”, or “potential” could also work as possible magic stats. I agree that “lore” is too similar too intelligence to not cause confusion.
@Miscast , I believe it was in your toad sculpt video when you said that you would want to create and produce your own mini's personally I think arcane ugly would be the perfect opportunity to do that. Also it would be really neat if you were to get some of your friends together to help, the more the merrier. :)
Really love the idea of the Ward and the importance of telegraphing threats/monster expectations. I started to refer to telegraphing as 'heralds' in my homebrew, with heralds for NPC actions, spells, traps, etc to key players into what's happening before it happens. Super common in games too, for tension and strategy, like the 'wind-up' before the pitch
Your content is currently my favorite one on TH-cam! Not only because I cannot wait to play that game but also because every video of yours is filled with creativity and love! I love it!
I would love to see a patron system introduced. I know it gets close to having classes which you don't want but having an ancient being give a player their magic or even other things like gifts would be super cool
It’s pretty cool that you are able to simplify the mechanics and still keep the spirit of the game, and new stuff can just be made according to older stuff using those rules, damn that’s clever. Mesmerizing,as always
this series is so cool, what if you added elemental hats that gave you buffs if you casted magic that followed that element and debuffs for casing opposite of it. for example a top hat with the top of it acting as a bowl full of water. if you cast a water spell you may get some strange advantage and if you cast a fire spell you might get some weird debuff.
Was rewatching the arcane ugly stuff today unaware this treat was in store! Great job, really loved the frog/spell bit! (Thanks for inspiring me to start making again)
Just want to let you know that these videos have inspired me immensely. I'd been sitting on some half-written RPG rules for months (or years, I don't know), but your Arcane Ugly videos inspired me to get off my butt and get it to a playable state. I'm currently running a West Marches style game with it, and it's been a blast! Definitely looking forward to Arcane Ugly coming out in full. I totally want to run it whenever my current campaign ends/peters out!
Hahahahahaaa! That last clip with Miniac.... 😄😄😄 (Also: You could make little adventure films! That black and white segment with the crew walking through all the monsters looked really nice. And your characters, the little wizard and Co. are lovely. I'd definitely watch little short films about them on adventures. Or perhaps just a trailer, or a few, to promote the game.🙂)
Glad to see an update on this, i hope testing goes well. I'm also making an rpg though my experience with rpgs are limited, but i hope to test it sometime. Your first Arcane Ugly video was what pushed me to put my own idea on paper and the following updates on it have kept me engaged in my own project so thank you very much Miscast, i really apreciate it.
The individual spell failures are very nice, but take alot of work to hammer out. My home brew system has 104 Spells, and each has both 3 Power Casting Levels and 3 Equally Horrible Miscast Levels. I’m about halfway through the list but it’s a pretty big meal on my plate.
FINALLY! The only reason I’m subscribed is so I can keep up with arcane ugly development. Some of the other stuff is cool too but the creative process of making a ttrpg is the tops.
The frog rain miscast animation was amazing and super funny. I'm slowly getting into this, I love the miscast mechanics and its probably the gem of this game. You totally have someone in south america that's gonna spread the word about this Trent.
Two nitpicks. One is the "scale to party HP" icon. Just make it scales. Second, and this is more of an idea than a nitpick, make different tables for the traits, possibly tables for different biomes (cave, desert, mountains, forests, plains, ocean, river, etc.) creature types (snail/slime, flying, 4-legged beasties, snakes, mutated humanoids, etc.) and maybe for different danger levels too. The latter would have traits such as auras (the water boils and evaporates as the slug moves it's sticky body towards you slowly; the air around the giant feels tingly, warping the reality slightly towards the chaos...) and maybe some special body parts that could be after a few campaigns recognised by the players, and taken away as a trophy (the creature pierces you with dozens of it's glowy pink eyes, and you suddenly don't feel so sure stabbing it was a good idea; golden horns protrude violently from underneath the panther's skin, and as you approach it, they start shifting, moving, swinging, in your general direction)
Trent, I have been watching you develop this game since the beginning and I am honestly so impressed! I have tried creating multiple RPGs and they always seem to be too similar to the Big popular one. But this, this is different, and new, and AWESOME! and one day I would love to be able to play it with friends around my own table. Keep up the awesome work and I am so excited to see where you go from here!
Splitting social interaction over multiple stats is such a cool idea! I wish more systems did that. Too often, people dump charisma and then hang out in the back just waiting for the next murder sesh.
Heroes could have chance to encounter "terrifying stories" of monsters in the area revealing 1-2 cards at a time building the monster and giving them reasonable warning if it will be op.
I think combining Lore with one of the other stats is a good idea. It makes it so the "Magic" stat is a good investment, but a player doesn't need to feel bad for putting points in their other stats. It also means that different builds might favor different spells. An alternate way to do this would be to make spells more general purpose, but changing their effects based on which of the other three stats the character used. "Stone Flesh", for instance, might make your skin rock hard if you use Strength, but might make your _mind_ impenetrable if used with Intelligence. Using it with Dexterity might make your body able to pass through stone, because it's enhancing your movement.
The 3 core stats is similar to Cogent Roleplay (Shadiversity/Jazza made it) - I have found the simplicity refreshing. Good idea to add in the 4th magic one - big fan.
I am Super excited to see if you are going to put this up for purchase or on Kickstarter I wish I could buy starter sets and physical copies of the rule super excited bro
So I had an idea about intentional miscasts. I don't fully know how the spellcasting system works (If you've already explained, my apologies) but I'm going to be using the D&D spellcasting system as a base. (If yours is different, it shouldn't matter too much.) Say you're a melee fighter with a spellcaster in your group. The spellcaster has, by some means, made an item that lets you cast the Sending spell (or some spell that lets you communicate telepathically) to them while the party has split up. Suddenly, you're ambushed by a hoard of orcs and are outmatched, so you gamble with the item and _intentionally_ miscast. Maybe you know from watching the spellcaster use that spell that it often miscasts by blasting deafening sound, so you intentionally miscast in order to use a utility spell offensively. Does that make any sense at all? Probably not.
Great video! If you are looking for some more ideas for monster traits, there is a book called the Monster Alphabet that is based on making new weird monsters with strange terrifying powers. It might be up your alley. There is also a book by the same authors called the Dungeon Alphabet which has similar things to make strange dungeons and dungeon happenings.
The loot and miscast systems remind me of one of my favorite ttrpg's which is Gamma World (DnD 4e). I wish Wizards actually developed that IP into its own thing alongside 5e

thanks for all you do !
All the motion graphics were so much fun! And don't be shy, you can release the full hour of goblin Miniac footage.
Make it 10h so that it falls in line with great other loops from the earlier days of the internet
Can’t believe Amber let Scott use his special bedroom moves on video.
goblin mode gets all the ladies
"I wonder what Miniac is doing."

Haha, love the miscast. Being a wizard is the ultimate escape from realism and the fact spells can go array in such a random bizarre way is awesome =)
i agree!
some lovely animations too...
cheers, 100% why this video took so long to release

that freakin frog spell animation hahaha well done sir, honestly one of the most entertaining videos I've watched in recent memory

The passion for your craft bleeds through the video! Thanks for the inspiration!
As someone who one day would love to publish a TTRPG, this is super inspiring. Thank you for sharing the whole process!
I think “Weirdness” might be a good name for the magic stat due to people who can do witchcraft often being referred to as weird
I think this is my favourite suggestion so far
Weirdness + Intelligence = Lore
