Hyperion XP-1 Hydrogen Powered Supercar Goes 1,000 Miles (And Very Quickly)

  • There are plenty of battery-electric car startups. Hyperion believes hydrogen is a far better way to launch a car from 0-60 miles an hour in 2.2 seconds. This is a preview of the XP-1 that will be built in Ohio and available in late 2021. Tom Voelk interviews Hyperion CEO and founding member Angelo Kafantaris on why he and his team believe hydrogen is the future and why NASA and Mattel played a part in the birth of the XP-1. This is largely a video interview but packed with information and pictures (sorry about the low quality video and audio). A later video will focus on why Kafantaris believes hydrogen is easier and more efficient to produce than you might think.

    A few thoughts: Fuel Cells cars have been sold in California on a limited basis and there is a limit4ed H2 distribution system. These have been smaller cars and have modest performance compared to this super car. There seems be very limited details on the power train other than it has a fuel cell and ultra capacitors. There is no discussion of how those elements are combined, but fuel cells, particularly solid matrix don’t throttle easily. The ultra capacitors can charge and discharge large amount of power quickly but for very short period of time. I doubt whether the 0 to 60 time is repeatable without some recharging of the capacitors.

    I truly hope this works out and gets the word out faster..... so many people do not understand that battery electric cars are good in the short term, but are SUPER bad in the long term, as they need new batteries every once in a while and that we already have such a small reserve of lithium on earth and that is the most used elements in those batteries and that we no longer have easy to extract lithium now, we just have hard to extract lithium that requires a lot of harmful digging that hurts and disrupts the environment around it... hydrogen is far superior to battery powered vehicles.... i believe the future is a hydrogen vehicle with a small battery that gets you 50 miles that you can plug-in in your house to charge for your commute

  • @citibear57

    That was very interesting. Thanks Tom! I believe that it is time to starting working on bringing hydrogen-powered vehicles to the masses. Yes, I know that some of the mainstream car manufacturers have already brought hydrogen-powered vehicles to the market (Toyota Mirai, Hyundai Nexo, Honda Clarity) but the fuelling infrastructure is in its infancy. I believe they have only been available in California as leases only. Am I correct on that? There is also the issue with educating the public about hydrogen as a fuel, as many people immediately think about the hydrogen bomb or the Hindenburg when they hear the word hydrogen.. We are certainly seeing a trend towards electric vehicles, but I am concerned about the increased demand for electricity. We already know how bad coal-fired power plants are to the environment, and we have seen a few nuclear power plant accidents. Needless to say, a lot of our electricity comes from 'dirty sources'. I think hydrogen powered vehicles is the future. Angelo impressed me, and I wish him and Hyperion success.

    While you say that battery will degrade with charging cycle, so will your hydrogen engine. (It is not correct to compare the battery with just your hydrogen storage tank) and if you compare hydrogen engine architecture with a EV motor architecture, the hydrogen engine will have more parts and it involve more complex high temperature processes which mean more maintenance involved.

    For this technology to be viable is to make hydrogen widely available at lower cost than electricity

    • @KristoferOlsson
      @KristoferOlsson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that is impossible. You will always use more energy to produce hydrogen then you get in the finished product. 50-55 kwh to produce 1kg of hydrogen which contains 33.6kwh of energy. thats a loss of 33% of the energy in the production only. Then you have transports to the hydrogen factory and transports from the factory, refilling and last part transforming hydrogen back to electricity to fill the batteri then take the energy out of the battery again to run the electric motors. Then we have to add building a new infrastructure of fillingstations.

    Great video! I have to disagree with him about the sound of cars. I owned a FIAT 500 Abarth for 7 years, which the sound was the top reason I bought it. I've been looking at BEV & PHEV, and one of the things I appreciate about them is the silence you get while running in pure EV. In these days of constant 'noise', I find it nice to have my car now be a quiet place I can chill out in, with little or no sounds. That being said, I cannot wait to hear the 'dragon noises' this car can make!!!

    The Toyota Mirai needs 37.5 gallons of hydrogen to travel 400 miles. Assuming the Hyperion has efficiency similar to the Mirai's, it would need to carry 80 gallons of hydrogen to travel 1000 miles. At $16/gallon, a fill up would cost $1,280!

      It is a hard thing to do. This car is about hydrogen cells to produce electricity by combining it with oxygen to get water as a subproduct. "The saint" was related to hydrogen fusion, a form of nuclear reaction that produces a lot of clean energy and helium as a subproduct. That technology has advanced greatly and there are already viable options for big scale reactors. Google "ITER tokamak" for more info. Some say that in 30 years the world can be powered by hydrogen fusión.

    Sure, 1000 miles per fill up is easily possible for hydrogen car. But so is 3000 mile range per fill up for gasoline car. Nobody makes 3000 mile range gasoline car because there is no demand for it (but they ought to - it will make E. Musk purple with jealosy!). 400-700 mile range per 5 min fillup is plenty for everyone.

    They’ve yet to figure out how to fix the transportation issue. Transporting hydrogen is a massive hurdle, way more than designing an engine. Laws of physics make the energy needed to transport it, way less efficient than even electricity and of course gas.
