Brian Clough was always angry after that Final, believing (rightly) that Spurs should have played most of the match with 10 men. Gascoigne should have been sent off for the first challenge on Garry Parker, never mind the second one on Gary Charles. The FA Cup was the only domestic trophy that Clough did not win as a manager.
Yeah was an odd game riddled with mistakes. Gazza should have been sent off, Forest's goal should have been disallowed for the foul in the wall, Linekar's goal was incorrectly ruled out and then an own goal at the end. Madness!
You have to give Parker & Charles 10/10 for getting straight back up after them tackles, especially the Parker one, that was out and out assault in anyone’s book.
Ref admits he should have given Gazza a red card, but didn't because of the "sense of occasion" or something. Not sure where in the Laws of the Game it states that referees can unilaterally decide not to enforce the rules, just because. Ironically, his sense of occasion in not sending Gazza off for the first horror tackle led to him doing his knee ligaments in the second horror tackle (which he also escaped any punishment for).
he did not sent gazza off because he was englands golden boy at the time . cheating and croupt refs have screwed over teams for many years ,gazza was an talented temper tantrum manchild his whole life . if the powers that be sent him off and forced him to take a look at his life them he might have changed instead of turning out the way he has . iam amazed he still alive
I went to school with Des. Class of 1982 - Ambrose Fleming School, Enfield. He was sponsored by Puma while at school. Brian Clough used to drive him home after matches.
Milford has a lot to answer for here. He didn't even speak to Gascoigne after the first tackle. Disgraceful. OK, he was never going to send him off that early, but a booking would have calmed him down. However, to not even talk to him was abysmal refereeing and showed that Milford just wasn't up to the job. You're given the FA Cup Final to referee with the expectation that you're one of the best refs in the business and that you know what you're doing. You're given the gig on the understanding that you are capable of stepping up to the plate and doing what's needed irrespective of who is involved. Awful awful refereeing here.
So they interviewed the cup final ref Roger Milford?! He could have saved Gazza from himself by sending him off after his horror tackle on Scott Parker at 1.01
I don't give a fuck about Gascoigne, I only care that if Milford had of made two correct decisions, we would have played against a spurs side with 10 men.
Ref bottled it. First tackle was really a red card - but because it was Wembley and Gazza he took no action. Gazza was NEVER the same player again after this injury.
People placing the blame at the referee's feet need to remember this was a FA Cup final at the height of Gazzamania. Send off Gascoigne for that first horror tackle (and that's what it was) he would be pilloried to this day. Gascoigne made the tackles and paid a huge price.
He was like a 6 year old child in his head. Grown adults who are like that are _lucky_ if they manage to avoid serious incidents/accidents. You pay a heavy price for not growing up.
I'm italian and I will say that he was a pleasure to watch and he was one of the best players at Euro 96. I say we saw his full potential, but not long enough.
Us Forest fans are a weird bunch. I have no ill will towards Gazza or Spurs- footie is as footie does- I reserve that for Anderlecht- or rather the cheats at the top. I supported Spurs in that final and (some) justice was done.
No doubt about, Gazza should have been given straight red for that assault on Gary Parker. I usually like Gary Mabbutt but what the f##k is he talking about??!!! “Had I seen replay on that tackle, I would have spoken to him” Gary, you didn’t need to see replay to see what he’d done!! Even if he hadn’t, which I highly doubt, at least two team mates were within a couple of metres away, didn’t any team mate feel the need to speak to him?..
I blame Roger Milford, if he'd booked Gazza for the foul on Garry Parker he'd probably have thought twice about lunging in and hurting himself so badly.
People saying Spurs should have played 85 minutes with 10 men are correct. However even as a Forest fan I’d say we would have lost. We played an absolute shocker. Remember that Lineker missed a penalty and also had a perfectly good goal wrongly disallowed for offside. We could have easily lost 4-1.
Liverpool fan here. In saying that you are assuming that had Tottenham played 85 minutes with 10 men, that the match would have panned out as it did. Well there’s absolutely no certainty of that, and it’s highly likely that Cough,(not to mention the players), would have found a way to make Forest’s one-man advantage count. The bottomline is that Forest were badly disadvantaged by the disgraceful actions of the Ref, who bent over backwards to do everything possible to help the Psycho Gazza and his team.
The Nottingham Forest fans have every right to feel robbed that Gazza wasn’t sent off. Taking emotion out of the equation he should have been sent off. Sorry Roger Milford, you let yourself down that day.
A few things here. It's incredible how Gazza was a sending off decision away from perhaps saving his career. Secondly, I understand where Milford is coming from in a way. I think you have to judge situations on it's own merits. Having said that, you can see how referees can be so swayed by an occasion. They're only human. This is why I don't believe in stupid robotic rules in refereeing. You have to judge decisions by their own merits or you begin sending players off for reasons that are utterly ridiculous
He was finished after that injury, ok he went and played in a pub league for 3 years against shite and stood out, but that was relative to the level, in between in Italy and the return to England he was average
@@flaviusconstantius9702 He was nowhere near the same player in 96 as he was before this injury, but still just about good enough at 50% of what he was to still be effective.
279atcardiff "I don't give a fuck about Gascoigne, I only care that if Milford had of made two correct decisions, we would have played against a spurs side with 10 men." Which two correct decisions are those? The one where Lineker's goal was wrongly disallowed for offside? The one where Lee Glover fouled Gary Mabbutt in the wall for Pearce's free kick? The one where Mark Crossley didn't get sent off for the professional foul on Lineker for the penalty, which he then saved? If Milford had made a few more correct decisions, you would have lost 4-0.
Do you not understand none of that would have happened if Milford acted with integrity and sent off Gazza like he admitted he should have done in this video. The Forest players played like zombies that day after that incident knowing full well that Spurs players could inflict GBH on them at any time with impunity due to Milford's bias.
TheTruth Merchant You mean to tell me that a Nottingham Forest side, managed by Brian Clough & having the likes of Stuart Pearce & Roy Keane in the starting line up, were too intimidated by Gascoignes tackle to play properly? Was Lee Glover intimidated when on the resulting free kick, he attempted to sexually assault Mabbut in order to create a gap for Pearce to shoot through? The scoreline frankly flattered Forest that day, they should have been thumped.
What are you on about Glover? That goes on at free kicks all the time. Mabbutt fell to the ground like he had been hit by a truck, too weak in the tussle.
TheTruth Merchant Watch that goal again, Glover literally pushed Mabbutt to the floor & the Grandstand pundits even highlighted how it was a foul during HT on the original BBC broadcast.
Haha You watch it again!! Pushed? Are you for real? He did not lay a hand on him! Glover barely leant on him and Mabbutt was down like a sack of spuds.
I actually heard that he was snorting coke before these big games. I don't know if that's true or not, but I'm sure I heard an interview with another player who said that was the reason he'd be bouncing off the walls in the tunnel.
Remember it like yesterday. Weak as piss refereeing. Gazza should have been off for his studs in the chest assault on Gary Parker, even back in those days. Milford’s excuse that the ref who sent off Moran for the first time in a cup final getting some stick just doesn’t cut it. Forest robbed that day.
