  • 60 years ago, a unique railroad closed in January 1963. The Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee was a fan favorite as being the fastest and greatest interurban railroads of all time. Seeing the fast interurbans speeding up and down their tracks from Chicago IL to Milwaukee WI. In 2023 the Illinois railway museum put together a special anniversary event in honor of the North Shore Line. All day on January 21, 2023 the museum brought out all their North Shore equipment from Interurbans, a street car, the electroliner, and more! During the event the volunteers put on a great show running separate interurban trains from two car trains to the 5 car night special in the evening. We owe the IRM a lot of gratitude for their hard work for putting this event together and will be remembered forever by railfans.
Special thanks to: Jim Martin for the videos and the IRM for special permission for filming most scenes on mainline.

Part of the museum trackage sure looks like the South Shore Line!!!

Magnifique ! Merci pour ce formidable travail de conservation. Au moment où la planète s'interroge à propos de la décarbonation des transports, voici un témoignage de l'intelligence du passé !

What an EXCELLENT Video! I want to shake your hand while I get a Klennex to wipe the TEARS from my eyes as the scene from about 9:12 reminds me so, so, much of the South Shore Line's Orange Cars that had that very same A-2 Type Horn, and going 45-50 mph down the Right Of Way through Gary, Indiana between 2nd and 3rd Avenues! It is no doubt that the Railroading World lost a GEM when the North Shore exited from the business! Again, an EXCELLENT piece of work! :)

@@TWIGYBNSF I wish IRM could engineer a trade-off with Seashore to get #415 diner car. That woud be the iceing on the cake for any NSL collection.

Put 3rd rail shoes on these interurban trolleys and they will be able to run on the L lines of Chicago! 😊

If only this railroad could have survived like the South Shore Line did today. It most likely would have taken on the appearance of the South Shore Line if it were in operation today.

Same. But I think they'd keep the cars the same length to acomidate the CTA's tracks. But if the NSL didn't have any competition, they'd be around still 😥

@TWIGYBNSF If the North Shore Line were to utilize the abandoned right of way of the CN&W freight line they wouldn't have to conform to CTA L clearance and standards and maybe have a terminal in Streeterville and have cars built like today's South Shore Line.

    • @albertcarello619

      That's true!

    • @albertcarello619

@TWIGYBNSF The North Shore Line and the Chicago Aurora and Elgin had stiff competition from the Chicago North Western which parelled their lines for much of their distances. Also they had stiff competition from the Milwaukee Road. The South Shore Line had no direct competition which is one reason why it's still in existence and a very hefty freight business too.

My son is special needs and he really likes interurbans 🚋🛤 he thinks they are highly underrated forms of public transportation and all should be preserved, restored, and put back into service carrying passengers between cities just like they use to. He also thinks that the entire North Shore Line should be rebuilt and used again as well as the Chicago, Aurora, & Elgin, the Sacramento Northern, and Pacific Electric but he does not want that to be wishful thinking he wants it to be a reality!
