Truly an inspiration to many artists both starting off and established. I really enjoyed how he broke down the fundamentals to drawing the hands in multiple positions. I haven't picked up a pencil (well to draw anyway) in such a long time. This video alone has inspired me to pick it up again. Awesome video and Jim Lee is amazing.
Whoa, that asymmetrical pentagon shape method is the SIMPLEST method to drawing hands I've ever seen. He made sense of so much stuff in so little time. Amazing.
Yes, he posted that letter himself. Cause naturally he couldn't be born while knowing how to draw hands, could he now ? Everyone sucked at hands at some point in their life, so did Jim. That however means nothing now.
I do believe the point is that someone as brilliant as Jim, at one point had the same trouble that a lot of us have, and even got quite a curtly worded letter, which in a way is reassuring. In a retrospective kind of way, that's amusing as.. well, you saw what they said, and look how good he is now.
I don’t even have a problem drawing hands but people always ask what the secret to drawing them is.And I never have any tips other than I just draw what I see or what I’m envisioning in my mind.So this was great to watch for that reason alone due to the way Jim simplifies things and makes them easier to understand.
***** Why would he study or try to draw something he will probably need to ? if he draws for dc, marvel, he'd never get to draw any genitails anyway. Thats not funny or weird, it's just his way / style.
I notice that for artists like Lee, it's as important to be an anatomist as it is an artist. That, plus the ability to visualize in 3D. Through sheer repetition of doing it, this guy's a master.
Out of all the ways I have been taught how to draw hands, this is the only one that really made sense, and helped me. Thanks Jim, keep up the good work.
"Repetition is the mother of mastery." (Just be sure you're repeating the right actions :-) When you see somebody making the difficult look easy? You can be sure it was difficult for them at some point, too, but their desire & determination overpowered & outlasted their frustration, laziness, lack of focus, etc.
hands is my worst things when i draw a character, i want to learn about hand on hand hips or on hand clenched another hand i don't find any of like this tutorial on youtube or google... btw he's really great about drawing, i always interested to see his drawing
My main problem is making the feet look good. (Just like with the rest of the body, make a sketch of where the fingers should go, then build up shape. It also helps to put the hands in first, then sketch out the arms.
If one want to really learn to do it right then reviewing this is vital. Don't just watch it once then you try to do wat he did and fi d your self incompitent. One must not be like that. A quote says "The belief that greatness already exist becomes the enemy of mastery!" - Tony Jeary (Strategic Acceleration). In a Philippine noon time a show, a singing contestant was probably sarcastic about what she said, "Practice makes permanent". VERY TRUE. When you always practice whatever that hing you like the most makes you better at it. Just look at Mr. Lee. He is now a master and that is now permanent. Biologically or physically speaking. Scientist found out that Myelin is also responsible in all this and not muscle memory. I can say that "Mastery is permanent!"
ll do anything to be as good as this guy. i wanna just draw like my own cartoons . i have so much to give .i hope i help myself help you all help your kids have a better cartoon future lol
Oh, haha! No ways. I don't really draw other than doodles. I took 2D art classes all through HS, but it's not something I pursued. But I have a number of concept artist and storyboard artist friends and watching them draw hands always hypnotizes me. XD
I give him this: he's good. Really good... ...but man, you need to slow down. I get that maybe you had a time limit and what have you, but a decent, slow tutorial covering a minimum amount of material is worth so much more than blasting through sloppiness covering a large variety of material. I still learned some cool tips and tricks here fersure though! This is still valuable stuff! I appreciate it. (: Just slow it down a bit please! Oh, also... I'm new to this channel. This is from 2013 so maybe he has slowed things down and explains things a bit better. I'll be finding out! ^-^
Jim Lee's quick scribbles look like a lot of people's best stuff.
SotNist yeah
U know im hands on get it
Yeah.. at 2:50 seconds, look better than most of the hands I draw
I love the way he draws. He draws so quick and elegant. It's like he's gliding over the paper.
Some person in the crowd:draw hands
Jim lee: hold my baseball
When Jim Lee drew that Superman, my mouth was dropped open. He does it so effortlessly.
I learned to draw hands entirely from this single video. you are amazing jim lee.

jim lee is a drawing machine. he doesn't need to think about any of his lines, it just happens instinctively
FluffyKittenofMordor decades of experience does that to a man.

I haven't picked up a pencil (well to draw anyway) in such a long time. This video alone has inspired me to pick it up again. Awesome video and Jim Lee is amazing.
It's pretty amazing to watch talented artists just casually draw hands, which to me are the single hardest thing to get right ever. Haha.
Whoa, that asymmetrical pentagon shape method is the SIMPLEST method to drawing hands I've ever seen. He made sense of so much stuff in so little time. Amazing.
People always gonna hate. I don’t draw at all- but I have much respect for the craft
i cant stop smiling when im watching jim lee. i am learning, being entertained and amazed of how simple you make things look. thanks a lot
I like how he’s compassion towards art is always shown
This is hilarious because of Jim Lee's rejection letter from Marvel telling him to come back "when you have learned to draw hands."
Right?! Genuinely, when I get stuck drawing hands - hell anything really - , I think - 'what would Jim do?'
Yes, he posted that letter himself. Cause naturally he couldn't be born while knowing how to draw hands, could he now ? Everyone sucked at hands at some point in their life, so did Jim. That however means nothing now.

Well, at least he had a rejection letter. I never got one from them.
That quick batman head sketch is better than anything I have ever done.
Absolutely incredible... he sketches in seconds what would take me hours of rendering.

This is big time talent @Jim Lee ~✌️lots of respect for this guy~
I wish Jim Lee was my teacher when I was attending college.Drawing hands was my worst nightmare in class.
LOL WTF!
***** I'm terrible at drawing hands too... ;)
***** Why would he study or try to draw something he will probably need to ? if he draws for dc, marvel, he'd never get to draw any genitails anyway. Thats not funny or weird, it's just his way / style.
***** sounds more like homophobia
Ian Shay
maybe he was a latent homosexual

chill its simple foreshortening and shapes
+ITSplasticfork actually no. In order to draw hands , especially from imagination , you need a solid understanding of the anatomy as well as structure
you think those hands are anatomically correct? lol please stop its simple stuff
+ITSplasticfork If it's so simple lets see you do it. You need an understanding of structure and anatomy in order to exaggerate body parts correctly
Thank you for uploading this. This is by far one of my favourite videos on TH-cam! :D
X3
Awesome. He makes it look so easy. :D
those confident and loose lines only come with years and years of practice. very cool to see!
The King and Prince

wow, man. Back in 2013 I didn't even know how to speak english. This so amazing, feels like a time capsule.
This video just helped me a lot thanks jim

How the hell he was so popular, and why they give him jobs till today?
Vinicius Miranda
He draws nice pouches, and his characters are not that bad if viewed from the same angle

Jim Lee and Todd McFarlane were my favorite artists as a child in the early '90s.
The audio could be better but thank you for sharing this experience.
So cool. Jim was my favorite artist growing up. Incidentally, my ring finger is longer than my pointer.

You can learn that from Rob Liefeld... Although I wouldn't recommend it.

sSMASH I like how it’s so much more fast paced and matter of fact than any other tutorial on TH-cam. Watch it at half speed if u want
