The best “All Around” trumpet player of all time! Classical, Jazz, Easy Listening, Rock, you name it; Doc is “One Of A Kind”. Impeccable tone, incredible range (actual notes not squeaks), wonderful phrasing and so enjoyable to listen to. Doc is the perfect combination of natural talent and tireless work ethic. Listen to his Rhapsody for Now and Then album: I think it is trumpet perfection from the very first to very last note. Thanks for so many years of great music Doc! You are The Man!!
Doc is truly a great American treasure. His musicianship is highest level and tastefully distinctive. Its great to watch an American virtuoso at work at his peak.
Straordinario doc.Magnifico e superlativo. Una impronta indelebile. Era la tromba, per lui,un autentico modo per volare, quale gabbiano, che domina acque e cielo.Un caro saluto a lui,che ora è ancor più libero di esprimersi. Fortunato battaglia da Cosenza,Italia.
Had the pleasure of playing with Doc as our guest soloist in our high school spring concert in 1967. As a trumpet player, I was blown away just listening to him warm up. Played some of the toughest pieces I can ever remember during that concert.
On this day 3 years ago Arnie Lawrence, alto went back to heaven. We love you forever Arnie and you are so missed. Arnie Lawrence, the greatest Jazz Educator ever to pass through this earth.
Has there ever been the combination of brilliant tone and incredible articulation in the upper register? No. And after he shows his chops up there, he immediately nestles with no break into brilliance and beauty in the lower range and, well, everywhere.
The guys what... 80? Still plays that good. His concerto for trumpet I think can only be played by him it's so hard! Doc is truly one of the great treasures in the trumpet world. Dig the guitar players "mop top" hahaha.. great post!
Doc Severinsen is absolutely t\tremendous, funny and SERIOUSLY TALENTED! One of my favorite evenings was at his showroom In Oklahoma City, Ok, with Pete Fountain and a hand picked orchestra. Thanks for the memories Doc. Best Regards, Linda Freeman, Entertainment Director, Doc Severinsens, OKC
Excellent! Thanks for posting! This was obviously done around the time of his record dates for the Command label, and his "command" of the horn and technique were at their peak.
There have been, and are, plenty of good trumpet players, but Doc Severinsen is unique. He has the best tone quality and range of any Trumpet player I've ever heard! His musical technique is awesome, and he is in a league of his own.
I don't know that Doc has the best chops in the trumpeting world but if he doesn't, he's in the top short list. BUT I dare anyone to find a more versatile trumpet player anywhere, any time! He handles jazz, pop and classical music with equal mastery.
Life makes a full circle. I recently read something that these days he has discovered some great, world-class Mexican musicians working in a sleepy village he retired to. From what I understand he is now taking them on tour. I think he and his new entourage are guest artists with the Seattle Symphony, if I remember what I read correctly.
drdave25: You have excellent taste in trumpet players. I've been playing for 40 years and you listed three of my favorites. Doc is definitely the guy with the most precision and consistency. The perfect studio player. I met him on the tonight show in NY back in the early 70's. A great guy and an amazing player. I hear he is in his early 80s now, and living/playing in Mexico.
In Louisville this was just on the air about an hour ago...it is shown on the WHAS Crusade every year, and the actual on air footage is about 9 minutes long including a guiter solo and an organ solo not seen on the TH-cam footage, it is spectacular! :-)
He's the best--I remember as a little girl hearing the blaring horn coming from the t v as my parents were watching JC. He is supposed to come to my town next spring to play a concert with his current band; Amazing. Interesting bio of him on wikipedia.
@platinumplusenter One of the most underrated trumpet players, in spite of his fame. The Tonight Show had some amazing performers in the orchestra, but they didn't always get the credit they deserved.
This was Arnie Lawrence at age 28, at a crux in his career. If Doc sounds great, Arnie too sounds awesome, and it's a real kick to see Arnie playing cunga at one point! "Soul Call" has got to be right in his suspicion--that's Larry Coryell on guitar.
How cool it was always a trumpet player: from Leonard Seus to Doc Severinson to Clark Terry. And you're very right it was a crux. In one way, Arnie had it made in the shade. In another, he still had to find himself: Children of all Ages, Treasure Island, Israel. Best, Myron
Yeah that is true. I saw them in concert in October I think- he actually impressed me as he played a lot more than he did in his Christmas pops concerts.
3rd valve is good for intonation, since it's just one valve instead of two. You'll see a lot of professionals use 3rd valve instead of 1+2 for intonation reasons
To repeat what I have said about another Doc video -- there are a lot of great horn players, but for pure technique, crispness, and sound -- I have to vote for Doc as the best. It's like all-time best running backs in the NFL -- it all depends on how you define the best (pure runner -- Gale Sayers; best all-around runner -- Jim Brown; best all-around football player in the position, Walter Payton; etc.) Of "Best Trumpet Players of All time" -- Doc is definitely in the team photo.
My favorite comment to cause trouble is... Maynard who???? lol Ive loved Doc all my life and I was even shocked to see how creative and fast he was playing!
OMG...haha.... but was that a Farfisa organ? And a Gretch guitar? Well hell, take me back..Won't see that anymore. Oh, by the way, Doc is fantastic as usual. I'm not a trumpet player, just an admirer. He's unbelievable. The best. I've touted Maynard and Bill Chase for years but I do believe Doc was really the best all around. I'm so glad he's still around and cranking out the tunes.
by saying that, a lot of people want to dislike it so the number will change and you'll be wrong. I wish people would stop posting these comments. seriously
It's very possible Lee played with Doc Severinsen. Doc was friends with Chicago, and in fact went to Robert Lamm's house after Terry Kath's funeral. Lamm even credited Doc with pushing the band to continue on after Kath's death. I also know Doc gave a lot of clinics and may have played for Lee while Lee was at the Chicago conservatory.
This is Malaguena. I am trying to search for a song he did on the Tonight Show a long time ago, and for the life of me I can not recall the title? Buddy Rich and Don Ricles may have been on that same night. Does any one recall the show? Tops In Blue trumpet player from 1983 tour
love all this trumpet talk! doc came from the best of several worlds, superb training and classical technique, great lead and studio musician and his style was more Harry James and Rafael Mendez (the latter also made some swing style big band recordings for pan american) but his vibrato sounded just a bit dated compared to such modern studio leaders like Bobby Shew
No this was not Macarthur Park. This was a very fast Spanish song, much like Malaga or Malaguena. I am having a senior moment here, and can't recall the song. Funny- I know the notes of most of them by heart, just can't recall the titles.
For anyone that doesn't know this in Louisville when Doc was celebrity guest for the annual charity drive for crippled/handicapped children run by WHAS TV/radio.
anybody know of a way to get better sound quality on this recording? You basically can't hear anything but him, the backing band is like a whisper, especially the drums
@DieFromAwesomeness... Just be careful with that method. It's always better to be able to control vibrato with your air and diaphragm than by physically tampering with the horn's position. That can wear your chops down faster on a gig for sure.

Doc is definitely one of the best trumpeters of all time. The ease at which he plays, plus his incredible improvisations are magnificent!
Doc is one of the all time great trumpet players. Still going strong in his 90s. God bless him.
Doc is truly a great American treasure. His musicianship is highest level and tastefully distinctive. Its great to watch an American virtuoso at work at his peak.

The greatest trumpet player of all time everyone! The man can play anything you put in front of him.
....And then some!
Had the pleasure of playing with Doc as our guest soloist in our high school spring concert in 1967. As a trumpet player, I was blown away just listening to him warm up. Played some of the toughest pieces I can ever remember during that concert.
Man his tone is so beautiful!
On this day 3 years ago Arnie Lawrence, alto went back to heaven.
We love you forever Arnie and you are so missed.
Arnie Lawrence, the greatest Jazz Educator ever to pass through this earth.
I saw him twice in one day. 1976 at Carowinds. I can't believe anyone can play more perfectly. This guy is THE BEST!
2:33 that guitar solo changed my life!!!!
That guitarist's hair changed my life!
Doc changed the way I play in every aspect from style to tone. He to me is the greatest trumpet player of ALL time.
Has there ever been the combination of brilliant tone and incredible articulation in the upper register? No. And after he shows his chops up there, he immediately nestles with no break into brilliance and beauty in the lower range and, well, everywhere.
WOW! This IS a rare treat! Always loved Doc, and feel he was the best late TV band/orchestra leader/arranger of them all! WONDERUFL! 10+ stars!
The guys what... 80? Still plays that good. His concerto for trumpet I think can only be played by him it's so hard! Doc is truly one of the great treasures in the trumpet world. Dig the guitar players "mop top" hahaha.. great post!

Grew up taking him for granted on the Tonight show.
Have since learned that Doc was one of the best.
Great vid. ty.
Great musicians, utter masters of their instruments, at top form
Doc has got to be my favorite trumpet player of all time!
Michael Kubelka: Thanks for your short and very sweet story about meeting The Doctor. It made me feel good about being a trumpet player. Thanks again.
Excellent! Thanks for posting! This was obviously done around the time of his record dates for the Command label, and his "command" of the horn and technique were at their peak.
The two gits who dislike this play clarinet.
This is truly when he was at his peak!
There have been, and are, plenty of good trumpet players, but Doc Severinsen is unique. He has the best tone quality and range of any Trumpet player I've ever heard! His musical technique is awesome, and he is in a league of his own.

Doc is truly amazing on this! As for the guitar player, he does exactly what was required, comping! Nice head of hair too!!
It looks like Ross Tompkins on the keyboard!
Ross exhausted the piano's possibilities every time he played! There was nothing he couldn't do!
One hell of a guy! Doc, you are a great American! Always above the fold!
all the chops of classical, all the swing of swing...great...
I'm sure Doc didn't give a flying fudge about how long Larry's hair was, but just how great he played.
Life makes a full circle. I recently read something that these days he has discovered some great, world-class Mexican musicians working in a sleepy village he retired to. fantastic .. its great to hear technique and impro skills .. amazing .. very rare. since harry james
Cool, very stylish, great trumpet sound too.
He's the best--I remember as a little girl hearing the blaring horn coming from the t v as my parents were watching JC. He is supposed to come to my town next spring to play a concert with his current band; Amazing. Interesting bio of him on wikipedia.
Doc once said that he practiced three hours a day - every day. He never took his talent for granted.
@platinumplusenter One of the most underrated trumpet players, in spite of his fame. The Tonight Show had some amazing performers in the orchestra, but they didn't always get the credit they deserved.
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!
I played a trumpet for 12 years long ago and that was sick.
Such unique tone. Everytime I hear I know instanly its doc. Something I can say for other players.
This was Arnie Lawrence at age 28, at a crux in his career. If Doc sounds great, Arnie too sounds awesome, and it's a real kick to see Arnie playing cunga at one point! "Soul Call" has got to be right in his suspicion--that's Larry Coryell on guitar.

doc is still amazing and touring in 2012, great band with ernie watts
Simply Brilliant
Yeah, it's Malaguena...awesome!!
Note the alternate 3rd valve fingering of the high A at 2:52. Doc, you rule!
3rd valve is good for intonation, since it's just one valve instead of two. You'll see a lot of professionals use 3rd valve instead of 1+2 for intonation reasons
I LOVE YOU, DOC. !!!! ❤❤❤💕
What an inspiration. The first to totally bridge classical, jazz and pretty much anything under the sun. He's not underrated in my book!!
виртуоз мастер высоких звуков и вибрато!!!
You're not lyin! amazing!

Amazing!
This one video justifies the entire Internet and TH-cam and my computer!!!!
Entirely possible Doc was the only player on the planet who could blow like this.
Arnie we love you and miss you
OMG!!! YES!!!!!
Russ playing that organ is killing it !
My favorite comment to cause trouble is... Maynard who???? lol Ive loved Doc all my life and I was even shocked to see how creative and fast he was playing!
WOW!! I HAVE THAT VERY SAME CONGA.
VIVA DOC SEVERINSEN
OMG...haha....
but was that a Farfisa organ? And a Gretch guitar? Well hell, take me back..Won't see that anymore. Oh, by the way, Doc is fantastic as usual. I'm not a trumpet player, just an admirer. Estupenda música e interpretación.

by saying that, a lot of people want to dislike it so the number will change and you'll be wrong. I wish people would stop posting these comments. seriously
I believe that's Arnie Lawrence (1938-2005) on alto saxophone.

Tops In Blue trumpet player from 1983 tour
Doc Certainly got better with age.
Good Lord, he is incredible here though...
love all this trumpet talk! doc came from the best of several worlds, superb training and classical technique, great lead and studio musician and his style was more Harry James and Rafael Mendez (the latter also made some swing style big band recordings for pan american) but his vibrato sounded just a bit dated compared to such modern studio leaders like Bobby Shew
Hell. You knew he was getting ready to kick some ass on trumpet by the way he took a deep breath.
YEEEEEEEEEES, MALAGUENA!
eu tambem so trompetista so que to no inicio e sonho ser igual esse cara
No this was not Macarthur Park. This was a very fast Spanish song, much like Malaga or Malaguena. I am having a senior moment here, and can't recall the song. Funny- I know the notes of most of them by heart, just can't recall the titles.
yeah
Sweet Jesus
Coryell playing his Gibson Super 400 around the time he formed the FREE SPIRITS.
Is he playing on a Getzen here?
yes, this is before the Amado water keys came out!
For anyone that doesn't know this in Louisville when Doc was celebrity guest for the annual charity drive for crippled/handicapped children run by WHAS TV/radio.
went to school with his daughters!
chops all day
omg!! that's Maleguena yes?
Yep
Nice "punt", there, Doc at 1:38.
That looks very suspiciously like Larry Coryell on guitar!
anybody know of a way to get better sound quality on this recording? You basically can't hear anything but him, the backing band is like a whisper, especially the drums
@otmq You can hear the instrument that counts - -grin-
@rainbowschild:
At the time, he was playing a Getzen Eterna.
2:23 ... look at the shadows to the left of his face... It almost looks like hes just standing in front of a green screen ...
I sneezed and missed the guitar solo :(
of course it's malaguena lol... and a great version at that!
At the opening theme, I kept waiting for Don Rickles to appear.
Who is that amazing sax player?
Is this Malaguena?
That's Arnie Lawrence.
LOL, YEAH!
@DieFromAwesomeness... Just be careful with that method. It's always better to be able to control vibrato with your air and diaphragm than by physically tampering with the horn's position. That can wear your chops down faster on a gig for sure.
I'm so sorry for you.
?
I want that horn. What kind of trumpet is it? Is it in the Smithsonian? If not, and it comes up on eBay, I will bid on it. ;-)
Larry Coryell on guitar?
Who is the Alto player?
