It looks like this horse had kissing spines on the lumbar vetebrae. Would this have affected its performance? Do horses get arthritis on the lumba-sacral articulations? ( the little bones that fit together and allow movement in the spine?)
Saddles that fit ponies and minis will not fit adult riders! The saddle has to fit both the horse and the rider. FMO please see Dr. Joyce Harman's books" The Pain-Free Back and Saddle Fit books Western and English to understand more about proper saddle fit for both horse and rider.
Fascinating discussion of caudal lumbar fusion! Hope there is more research out there.

I don't know what you are talking about saying some horses' backs are too short to fit a saddle. There are saddles for ponies and even minis.
