Practically the Semovente da 75/18 was the only tank that stood some chances against the allied tanks Despite the fact that they were not designed to fight other tanks, their 75/18 howitzer proved ideal (thanks to its low muzzle velocity) for firing HEAT shells with its 5.2 kg HEAT shell ("Effetto Pronto" in Italian) could pierce 80 mm of armour at 500 meters, and could thus defeat tanks such as the US built M3 Grant and the M4 Sherman used by the British Army as such, these machines were responsible for many of the successes by the Italian armoured troops during 1942-43. Although somewhat better armored than the M13/40 which it was based (30 to 50 mm at the front and 25 mm on the sides) it suffered from having the armour bolted/riveted, like all Italian tanks, so when hitted it literally ricocheted inside like bullets often with fatal results. My grandfather that fought at El Alemain as the commander of a medical unit at the front always told my father that it was terrible to hear the screaming of the crews both from the injury and burns. A friend of my father, that commanded a Semovente da 75/18 told me that he remembered bitterly how weak the armour and and the engine was and the the torque shaft often broke. I personally been inside this Semovente at Cecchignola and was shocked how "primitive" and cramped it was. Those crews were heroes... Good job👍👍👍

So solo che mio nonno, dopo la disfatta di El Alemain assieme a suoi uomini fece la terrible ritirata a Tobruck senza acqua e viveri e fu uno dei ultimi ad imbacarsi su una nave per Napoli. Mio padre mi disse che sebbene fu in ospedale per riprendersi non si riprese mai piú ed infine tornò a casa in Toscana ma morì nel 1950. Nel luglio 17 1944 mio nonno in quanto medico ha salvato e ricucito partigiani, tedeschi ed Americani. Non male direi....

I'm from New Zealand. my great grandfather fought in North Africa during ww2. He said the normal Italian soldier wasnt very good but the ones with the feathers on their helmets (Bersaglieri) were very tough like the Germans.

One of my great uncles served in North Africa during the war. He said the Allies' preferred method for dealing with Italian armor was to wait for the crew to get out and push, then open fire. Seriously though, Italy was in no shape to enter WW2 and Mussolini was insane to even consider it.
Balbo and another couple of generals tried to convince Mussolini to not enter, but he entered anyway because France was almost KO, and wanted to "sit at the winners table" Sadly for them the war did not end soon, and had to (try to) finish the modernization of their forces while at the same time fight one (and later two, with the arrival of US forces in Africa) of the most industrial capable nations in the world
The Semovente 75/18 was a major threat to allied tanks. It was responsible for destroying many of them, and preventing allied advances in N Africa. It also helped the 132nd "Ariete" advance on Tobruk, and the 1st battle of Al Alemein. During the 2nd Battle of El Alemein, Rommel relied on the Ariete, with their 75/18 guns and tanks, to hold off the allies so he could retreat. The Ariete was essentially destroyed during the 2nd battle. So, enough of the jokes about Italian soldiers! Did your uncle also tell you about the thousands of British troops captured by the Ariete? It is well documented.

They were developed for the eastern front (to counter T34s) but never had a chance to be used there. Only the small semovente 47mm was used in the East.

Sto realizzando un set di soldatini (italiani e indiani in Nord Africa 1941) per un bambino ma ho difficoltà a trovare informazioni sul Regio Esercito Italiano. Un video su come è stata organizzata un'azienda italiana di fucili sarebbe di grande aiuto. Sto componendo un plotone della Divisione Folgore e un plotone di Bersaglieri con un po' di artiglieria. Anche come erano organizzati i carri armati (ho un paio di tankette Carro Armarto L3, carri leggeri Carro Armarto L60-40, un Semovente L40 da 47 32, due Semovente 75/18 e due carri medi M13/40 ma non so come questi sarebbero stati raggruppati o marcati). Altre cose con cui sto avendo difficoltà sono: Contrassegni sui veicoli - So che hanno usato una targa bianca con scritte nere, ma non riesco a trovare un'illustrazione decente. C'erano anche piccoli segni rettangolari sui carri armati, ma ancora una volta non sono chiaro sui dettagli. Segni - Il set includerà un quartier generale, un deposito di munizioni, un punto di distribuzione dell'acqua, un posto di assistenza medica e una tenda di segnali o radio. Qualsiasi informazione sui segni associati e qualsiasi altro segno che possa essere stato utilizzato sarebbe davvero utile. Ho trovato molte foto di segni tedeschi, alcuni segni britannici e alcuni segni americani ma nessun segno italiano. Qualsiasi informazione su come sono stati organizzati i servizi medici italiani e il trasporto divisionale sarebbe di aiuto (vorrei includere quante più informazioni di questo tipo posso trovare in un piccolo opuscolo per accompagnare il set).
Hello My Granddad drove a captured Semovente in the area Novi Ligurie. I guess this was in 1944. Does anybody know wich unit of Wehrmacht was equipted with these vehicles in this area ? I also have pictures of a german captured command semovente.Grazie mille

The US Army spent considerable time and effort re-inventing this particular wheel, especially on the M3 Light Tank chassis. The US version eventually went into service in a much evolved iteration as the M8 "Scott" GMC. Which begs the question; logistical support echelons aside, would you rather be in the desert in a Semovente Su Scafo da 75/18 or an M8 Scott? The Smv has the added advantage of being available in the desert in '41/'42
Good content . I've subscribed because Italian armour deserves more scrutiny from TH-cam creators. However the narration voice needs some improvement. Is it AI ? It is very rushed and lacks the inflexion of a natural speaking voice which aids comprehension. Consequently it can be difficult to follow at times and gets very monotonous. Nevertheless , full marks for effort and I look forward to improvements in the future.

p.s. the narration should say 75 L 18 for the 75/18. "Eighteenths" has nothing to do with the 18 calibres length of the gun. ;)
