If I remember correctly I had commented previously that you had forgot to install the starter bracket that goes from the back of the starter to the side of the block.
I think you should keep the 6.5. If anything, it would be good content. If you absolutely get sick of it then get rid of it but I think you should make some more videos with it first
Restore the 6.5l plow truck if u can’t get it to run just replace the engine with a lbz 6.6 duramax engine fix all the rust sandblast the frame recoat it with black undercoat and put some cool wheels on it make it the coolest plow truck ever even put amber flashing lights on it for plowing if u want
I really like that ol 6.5. Hang some fenders , straight-axle , and just see what kind of power you can squeeze out of it. I think ALOT of guys would love to see that.
I love this video , as a fellow 6.5l and duramax TH-camr , get yourself the power master starter, the upgraded battery cable kit , some good good glow plugs and you’ll be set! They don’t start like the duramaxes but they will start haha !
My old 6.5l started here in Wyoming in -16 not problem other than it was not happy of 5 minutes lol glow plug make a world of difference. Definitely fix up the 6.5l I love those things!!
What I found worked best when I farmed. 1-Install some type of block heater on any below 0° use vehicle. 2-Use a gas vehicle if you have a choice or keep a diesel with #1 fuel warm. 3-Plan ahead and plug in the block heater at least 1 hour before starting. 4-Use ether only in emergencies and sparingly. I also think it is important to put up a large storage shed (you don't need a cement floor or heat) to keep all those nice trucks, tractors, RV, and lawn mower inside. The weather and sun wreak havoc on rubber, paint, and other things which devalue your investment prematurely. I have a magnetic oil pan heater that I keep for emergencies.
Facts. I'd never have a 6.5 or a Chevy but they will be around forever if ya want em to be! Fix it and don't say it's destroyed by speaking it into existence, if it's with the truck master on the property, then it's not done yet.
I have a 1993 6.5... last winter my glow plugs were done, along with the block heater, I tried to start it up anyways because it was coughing and I thought it might. I cranked and cranked until finally the starter was just free-spinning. When I looked underneath, the starter had detached from the block. I thought that the block had cracked, but the starter bolts had sheared in half. I had to order new bolts, and the old bolts, I had to drill them out with reverse twist bits from harbor freight. Mine is still running, just got back from work today. It's my winter beater tool. Block heater quit on me again, but the glow plugs are working now.
Absolutely - make a video on restoring the GMT400 6.5 Diesel truck. Next to mechanical work there will be a lot of body repairs due to severe corrosion of fenders. I have a 1997 Tahoe 2dr with 6.5L Diesel and a 1997 K3500 crew cab chevy with 6.5L diesel. There is a huge aftermarket for the GMT400 series and parts prices are reasonable. Of course such a restoration does not come cheap in particular labor cost!
I think the biggest saver on the fuel filters is to plumb in a fuel psi gauge somehow. Saving money not changing filters prematurely & catching a bad tank of fuel is key to longevity. Changed my fass filters & within 1k miles I went from 16-17 psi to 10. Pulled over & changed the filters again.
That's insane. You can get 10 more years out of those front end parts... Or idk how long front end parts last with modern chevies. I would hope 10 more years.
Snap-on makes a special pitman arm puller for the GM trucks, works like a charm. Not trying to sound like a snap-on fan boy or anything. Fix up the OBS chevy, those 6.5L trucks are cool.
I have '92 6.5 in storage the last 12 years that I start up every 2-3 months to keep everything lubricated and free. I don't even bother starting it below 40.
Ohio here, my condo said my 6.0 powerstroke plugged in was a safety hazard 😂 so moved it somewhere could leave plugged in. But would take a least 5 hours plugged in won't start till oil temp is at least 60 in this cold. Watched a video of guy in Alaska they wrap there fuel tank's and under hood in heating blankets lol also plugged in!
I have a 96 2door yukon with the 6.5td in it so I'm always up for seeing any new 6.5 related content. That being said, I'm well aware of the money pit they can be.
Love the obs Silverados... I would love to have that old truck. Definitely not fun working on these in those types of temps... Here in Omaha we have had all the similar temps, just no snow this year, put in a new fuel filter in the lmm on Tuesday and froze my rear end off, "in the garage"😂 TM/if you get rid of ol green, you'll miss her 4 sure
Keep the 6.5 for plowing. It will be be good content as you work on it for those that have 6.5s. Zipties seems different, but is humble at the same time. I wouldnt hesitate to contact him if i had a question about old diesels.
some terminals are prone to shrinking pretty bad, my 2nd gen terminals are always loose when it gets really cold. if they arent like a mirror and nice and tight you wont charge anything. dont be scared of either i use it everyday, shits a myth. a few of my engines came with either from the factory
Do you know if the starter has the bracket towards the front on the engine? If it's not on it could have snapped a starter bolt and allowed the starter to move. It's very common the bracket gets left off on the 6.2/6.5 diesels when the starter gets replaced, or it falls off since the bolt sometimes loosens up from vibrations. When the bracket isn't on it puts more torque on the starter bolts and it's what causes them to snap.
I had the smaller sp tools jump pack the one that starts up to 10 liter diesels but i burned it up trying to start a 6.5 had it for about 3 years that thing has jumped everything from mowers to that 6.5 and my lly i was sad to see it go
I had a 94 1500 6.5 southern comfort edition with woodgrain trim, plush leather seats custom paint and rims etc, but i bought it with 150k miles it was so rotted out there was no saving it, drove it for 150k more then got sent off to a scrap yard. Such a shame
@Atlantaconnection94 for now free is the only deal for me 😂😂😂😂 just have not had any money lately. I pray every day that nothing major happens because I would be so screwed!
You need to load the front end up on jack stands and use a pry bar to check your ball joints on that truck. All you did was check the steering components and wheel bearings by doing that in the air. You may know this but just putting it out there 👍🏻
A good truck if the glow plugs don't work. Is hookup and exhaust hose from like a shop. Put one end on the tailpipe of a warmed up truck. And put the other end into the intake of the vehicle your trying to start. We used to do it all the time in the bus company. There will still be some air in that exhaust to fire it up.
If anyone else's pitman arm croaks, remember that there are TWO! One has 3 "key splines", the other has 4. Just make note of what you have before you go and order a replacement without checking.

My mahindra tractor never wants to start in the cold, warm weather no problem. Only way is a quick shot of starter fluid and it will go. It is about 10 years old. Do glow plugs go bad?
TM...you bring back awful 😖 memories of working on my cluttered IFS in the past. However I noticed on your truck the front differential is one piece and not a two piece, did you upgrade the differential from the 2 piece one?
I changed the fuel filters when it reaches at least 40%. I have two fuel filters because I have the fass system! I'm guessing two fuel filters are better than one do you agree?
love the content. hopefully one day i will get a diesel truck, been after one for a while. unfortunately I'm in upstate ny and there usually rusted out and overpriced
Those 6.5L diesels are relatively easy to fix. The body is in rough shape but mechanically if you do a few things it could be a great plow truck or errand truck. Especially if they put lots of salt on the roads in your area. No point rusting out the duramax.
Hey Truck, if it makes you feel better, we got eight inches of snow and sub freezing temps near Pensacola, Florida. My 2023 Chevy 2500 was buried in snow but it started right up at around 19 degrees. But your cold starts on your L5P are cooler than mine.. my truck is still "heavier" than your's 😬 Fuel filter: I changed my filter at 20%, although the dealership, where I bought it, showed that they changed the fuel filter just prior to purchase. It was super clean, buf I'll probably go every other service interval. 5-6k. I just had it serviced, so probably after the next service I'll change the fuel filter again. My plan is actually to install an FASS drop in system and eliminate the factory filter housing. As far as the 6.5 goes, your call. I'd sell it. 1k OBO. But it's kinda nice to have an old beater truck to haul off scrap, get firewood etc without ruining your other trucks. The question is: does the need for it justify nickel and diming it will do to the wallet? Or the time you need to keep that old rig running? Me? I'd sell it. JMHO...
I'll take the 6.5. I've got a 95 3500 4x4 Chevrolet western hauler that I can not for the life of me figure it out. I am a disabled gas burner mechanic and trying to learn diesel on this thing, not going well at all!!!
Your tractor will clear the drive way I have a 2021 duramax and the computer keeps track of when it wants it changed it usually fall out to every 3 oil changes
Change my fuel filter every oil change 10000 kms or 6200 miles for you down in Michigan. Cheap insurance if you ask me also a good time to inspect the bottom on the bowl for any contaminants. Might be over kill.
@ Wish the previous owners of my LBZ would have coated mine lol prior New York truck and this baby has CANCER! Probably worse than the Sunkist truck! 😮💨
My LBZ has been sitting most of this winter and tonight I needed it but the batteries were so dead no interior lights even came on. I couldn't get it started with me gooloo jump pack and jumper cables on at the same time
Contact born for adventure. Lots of 6.5 stuff from military all mechanical fuel systems etc.. fun truck to do for something different. Restore as 6.5 then duramax swap it. To keep going on views same investment.
The 6.5 has been a pile since it came out I do believe it will be a money pit if you had a ol 5.9 Cummins that might be cool to do but not a build like the black Cummins but a marketplace pos in a pos that would get ya some views lol
Something quite wrong with that 6.5 if she needs ether. I had One in a 96 suburban with 3/4 million miles and it would start in our Canadian -25/-30 winter pretty decent. Was cranky but still did it. Crazy high compression for a diesel they start really well if everything is as it should be I paid 100 bucks for that suburban and it was fully loaded leather etc, most comfortable and best riding vehicle I’ve ever driven to date Tbh. And I currently daily a 2014 Denali duramax. My 6.5 was bone stock tho original pmd location if I sat still at a traffic light to long idling in summer it would heat up and shut the truck off 😂so was always a race to get moving again and get airflow going. Was a treat to drive. Ended up doing the cheap mans “chip” for a 6.5 which just entails a potentiometer wired inline with the map sensor signal wire and it fools the computer into thinking it has less boost then it does so adds more fuel and boost overall. It actually worked to 😂8 dollar performance upgrade and it was quite noticable. Cheeched Some smoke after that even
I wouldn’t get rid of it cuz I never even knew OBS chevs came with Detroit’s before I watched your vids. So they might be uncommon. Or I just live under a rock 😁
They have E learning in Indiana now they cancel if the wind blows the wrong way. Parents have to teach for the teacher the teachers don't have to lose a day why wouldn't they get the free day off. If you ever come back down to the ft. wayne in area hit me up. I have a set of cables I built I would give you that you could jump a combine if you needed without waiting.
Should I scrap the 6.5l? Also click here to buy truck parts also get entered in to win the toolbox giveaway

@ thanks
Contact born for adventure. Lots of 6.5 stuff from military all mechanical fuel systems etc.. fun truck to do for something different. Restore as 6.5 then duramax swap it. To keep going on views same investment.
-20 wind chill is cancel school policy. Don't remember if that is state or federal mandate
Sure wish these GM front ends were a little better. I have to rebuild mine
big mistake indeed, should have put a stove right under the engine, soviets did the same to start their trucks in the winter
The 6.5 has been a pile since it came out I do believe it will be a money pit if you had a ol 5.9 Cummins that might be cool to do but not a build like the black Cummins but a marketplace pos in a pos that would get ya some views lol
Wish I heard the turbo and exhaust from my L5P.....
id be interested if it came with the plow
I would rather see another duramax on the channel 6.5 are money pits my dad had one
Something quite wrong with that 6.5 if she needs ether. I had
One in a 96 suburban with 3/4 million miles and it would start in our Canadian -25/-30 winter pretty decent. Was cranky but still did it. Crazy high compression for a diesel they start really well if everything is as it should be
I paid 100 bucks for that suburban and it was fully loaded leather etc, most comfortable and best riding vehicle I’ve ever driven to date
Tbh. Cheeched
Some smoke after that even
Fix it up. I wouldn't mind seeing what you could do with the truck.
Build the Cummins into a dump truck,/snow plow.
I wouldn’t get rid of it cuz I never even knew OBS chevs came with Detroit’s before I watched your vids. So they might be uncommon. Or I just live under a rock 😁
They even put them in the 1500s, suburbans, and vans
Oh really????
Make it a burn out truck I’m sure you can stuff some go fast parts in it
They have E learning in Indiana now they cancel if the wind blows the wrong way. Parents have to teach for the teacher the teachers don't have to lose a day why wouldn't they get the free day off. If you ever come back down to the ft. wayne in area hit me up. I have a set of cables I built I would give you that you could jump a combine if you needed without waiting.
I bought some cheap wheel
Hubs instead of paying 350 apiece from my mechanic , got a pair for 150$ What gives?😊 🕺
I would take that 6.5 over any other diesel out there.
I would love to buy it
