Kiribati - We chased it for 5 days, but as dawn broke over the Pacific this morning we finally confronted the biggest tuna fishing vessel in the world. The Spanish-owned and flagged tuna purse seiner "Albatun Tres" is known as a 'super, super seiner' and can net 3,000 tonnes of tuna in a single fishing trip. This is almost double the entire annual catch of some Pacific island countries.

You used how many gallons of gas to chase down that boat only to drape a banner in the water? What a huge waste of time and resources.

    @manifestgtr Oh wow, man.
Seriously, take a look at some of the science out there. ICATT's own scientists warned them that their fishing was totally unsustainable, and then they went ahead and set the quota at twice the amount their scientists had reccomended.
Tuna's in big trouble. I urge you to do some research on this.

@thomaskomen I don't know where you get your info, but I bet you read it on some greenpeace website. Last time I split a tunas belly it was full of roe at a lot smaller size. And for your info sushi is pole caught or long lined. And lately they've been farming Blue Fin. Again I say stop the demand!

@netxposeidon Hi! I agree with you but if you recall, in 1992, the cod fishery in Newfoundland collapsed, and over 40 000 people lost their jobs. As a result, 12% of the population emigrated to other parts of Canada. If conservation action had been taken, then the population wouldn't have depleted to such low levels. Please have respect for nature, she gives us everything that we have.

Demand is high, as Tuna taste good. More people are learning about how "fishy taste" is not aways a bad thing and learning to appreciate the 'fighting strip' as well as the light meat in a Tuna. Look for ways for both to survive, humans who depend on Tuna and Tuna who need to breed and get big.

While I dissagree with Greenpeace hassling, I do beleive they need to rethink and protect the natural resources.
For example a female tuna can produce up to 10 million eggs in a spawning season, I noticed the average size of the Tuna fish in their net looked on average weight of being 10-20 lbs.
That would mean these are barely last years season of spawned tuna.

Agree, ships of that size shouldn't be allowed under International waters laws, could be stopped cut them off via import/export taxation.
Most people don't realise, ships of that size catch all types of fish, not just a tuna fleet, or a flounder or cod vessle they are a fishing boat, and they will target all markets.
This is dangerous to competition since they are able to control market prices, and thus knock out competition.
Taking full economic control over pricing.

don't you think it makes more sense to reduce the amount of times the ships go out than to say 'must be scrapped immediately'. I don't see why they just can't raise the price of tuna and fish less. I wouldn't mind paying more for tuna and hence eating it less.

Educating ppl and getting them to change their eating habits, slowing down on the tuna consumption, switching the interest from tuna to another species....I doubt any of that will save the tuna population. Yellowfin and bluefin tuna are very crucial to the eco system in the sea (that's not what's in this video though)... however, I would say that, when it comes to commercial fishing, these big vessels and their owners that really care about the resources they're gradually wiping out, it's all...

Man, that is one fabulous ship. Now I know why tuna is so affordable. Now if we do as Greenpeace suggests then it is them we will have to blame when tuna is $5.00 a can or blame them should the world go hungry. When the catches are less and less and it becomes unprofitable for them they will not use such large ships. To think that fishing will wipe out all tuna does not give tuna any credit for their survivability and is illogical on its face.

MrTabby: The oceans have been and are being overfished to the point that marine ecosystems are dying. Checkout the Grand Banks ecosystem for example. On the west coast of Canada I have seen ling cod, salmon and red snapper be commercialy exterpated in just the last 20 years. If we take too much out of the oceans then the oceans will die, are dying, have died in some places.
    Why don't people get it?

@failurbanik Thanks for your Bro-tip logic there mate.
    - Their population does not grow, its the whole point of over fishing, we are consuming fish so quickly we have outstripped their replacement rate.
    - Tuna are not fully mature until around 5 years yet we harvest over 60,000 tonnes per year, despite scientists arguing for limits as low as 7,500 tonnes per year.
    - If current trends continue large numbers of fish species will collapse.

One has to argue, is it better to try and save the tuna? Or accelerate its extinction? Because if Tuna is destined to be fished to extinction, is it not more compassionate to introduce a disease to them that will kill off their species so the suffering of slaughter will be spared to tens of millions more tuna?

it doesn't matter. bluefin tuna stocks are at a critical level and are continually being overfished at an unsustainable rate each year. these fish will disappear from the ocean in the next 10-15 years. by the way, the greenest form of fishing is rod and reel, bar none.

  • @BrightLibra

THAT is where our technolgy comes in. Just as there is a way to give the Salmon a way out of Pollock nets from factory ships in Alaska, there is a way to do this.
