      Mr. Glass has inspired so many to perform his work with astounding results. For example, Colin Huggins performance of I'm going to Make A Cake. Glass spins the gold and they shape it.

      Its also a good recording. The dynamics have more contrast here. In other performances one really doesnt know if its that the pianist wanted a constant level or if the audio is flattened.

    Profoundly beautiful, compulsively revisitable, and impossible to interrupt. Philip Glass performs this piece beautifully with effortless ease, whereas this performer grapples with it like a fierce creature. It’s like Jacob struggling with the angel all night to get a blessing

    I love her majesty over the piano. Upon 3:04, the first of several real openings, she surpasses all that I’ve seen - even from the master himself.

  • @valiken1
    @valiken1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This just shows me how powerfully Phillip Glass interprets music.. that he himself wrote.. She can hit all the notes.. but the tiny inflections and nuisances no one but Phillip himself can master.

    • @TenshinArts
      @TenshinArts 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      She isn't trying to hit all the inflections and nuances of Phillip Glass though. This is very much an interpretation of the piece, not an attempt to play the original version perfectly.
      No one cares about a copy of Glass, you might as well listen to his album then.

    • @valiken1
      @valiken1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TenshinArts I studied music for 8 years and can tell you that.. In modern music people redo and change around other artists songs, but in the classical world- typically the goal is to reproduce the music exactly as it was intended and is written on the sheet..
      You can hear in the song she tried her best to reproduce it just as Phillip did. The only changes, came from her inability to replicate the very high level skills that he incorporates, such as speeding up and slowing down- changing the time signature, in the middle of the verse. And playing loud and soft notes at the same time.. Those are the hardest skills that Glass pulls off. And she didn't do those moves not because she is interpreting it different. She didn't do them because only Glass himself has reached that level- that few others, even great pianists- can pull off.

    • @b19records51
      @b19records51 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@valiken1 That just isn't true. From a technical standpoint this isn't even a particularly complicated piece, but more to the point, interpretation is a big part of classical music performance and has been for hundreds of years. A score isn't an exact representation of how to play a piece - dynamics merely say 'loud' or 'soft' et cetera without putting a precise value in decibels or velocity to it; likewise a ritardando doesn't tell you how much or how quickly to slow down. In short, a lot is down to the performer's tastes.
      This is modern music, by the way - not that that matters for the above reasons. Performance is an art form in its own right and the reason we get skilled pianists such as Parlic to play relatively simple pieces (from the standpoint of technical skill), rather than only the most complex and near impossible ones, is because of what they can add in terms of interpretation.

    • @valiken1
      @valiken1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@b19records51 I really didn't hear much differences in interpretation on her part.. Just around 3:03 she's incapable of speeding up and slowing down as the piece requires a degree of fluidity.. She played it with metronomic precision.. I don't see that as artistic interpretation, as much as I do lack of capability. And yes it's hard to see exactly what someone like Mozart intended his pieces to sound like, as Mozart lived and died way before the advent of technology.
      However Phillip Glass the original composer of the song, has multiple playings right here on this platform so the reason you listed really doesn't apply to 20th century classical music. All you have to do is go type in Mad rush, to see the volume level, and "ritardandos" he has inserted into this masterpiece. Which she incorrectly played.

    • @b19records51
      @b19records51 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@valiken1 You would need to show me that these were written in the score. Any 15 year old amateaur is capable of 'speeding up and slowing down', so I really don't believe a professional would be incapable of doing so. She is CHOOSING not to, this is interpretation.

    I swear Is the only piece she plays with heart. She plays all the others so robotically. Instead of Branka I suggest that you all just find one of the videos of Philip Glass himself. All the pieces Branka performed you can find videos of glass doing way better. I'm sure that she's technically a better pianist then glass (especially now in his advanced age) but when Glass plays his own work he always plays with heart. Anyone who's interested look up Philip Glass play Metamorphosis 4 on the BBC late show or look up Philip Glass Live at the Garrison Institute playing this piece Mad Rush. Both are better performances than Branka delivered.

    • @dylanhiemstra2532
      @dylanhiemstra2532 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      2dicone You have to keep in mind that the other pieces Branka plays, (especially Metamorphosis) are (in my opinion) meant to be robotic. It isn't about feeling and emotion while playing but noticing the different phases in a piece like that.

    • @nori8675
      @nori8675 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      2dicone If you played robotically with no rubato or emotion, all of glass's work would suck.

    • @dylanhiemstra2532
      @dylanhiemstra2532 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kenneth Snyder I agree with you, but you don't put in as much emotion as you would by playing something from the romantic era, or even something like Einaudi or Allevi.

    • @bennemann
      @bennemann 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +2dicone It always amazes me how wildly opinions can differ. I find Mrs. Parlic to be a vastly superior interpreter of Glass' works than the man himself, even on the emotion aspect. Listening to her Metamorphosis album, I get this eerie, transcendental feeling that is entirely absent when I listen to any of Glass' recordings of the same pieces. True, she is much better technically, and that is undeniable. But it baffles me that you consider her interpretations robotic, because it's the exact opposite for me.

    For all men
    were by nature foolish
    who were in ignorance of God,
    and who from the good things seen
    did not succeed in knowing him who is,
    and from studying the works
    did not discern the artisan;
    But either fire, or wind, or the swift air,
    *the governors of the world, they considered gods.
    Now if out of joy in their beauty they thought them gods,
    let them know how far more excellent is the lord than these;
    for the original source of beauty fashioned them.
    Or if they were struck by their might and energy.
    let them from these things realize
    how much more powerful
    is he who made them.
    For from the greatness and the beauty of created things
    their original author, by analogy, is seen
    But yet, for these the blame is less;
    For they indeed have gone astray perhaps,
    though they seek God and wish to find him.
    For they search busily among his works,
    but are distracted by what they see,
    because the things seen are fair.
    But again, not even these are pardonable.
    For if they so far succeeded in knowledge
    that they could speculate about the world,
    how did they not more quickly find its Lord?
    Jesus O Savior
    I know not if you are real
    Come
    Come live in me ..
    Save me !
    Amen and Amen
    Revelations 22:17
    The Spirit and the bride say.
    "Come."
    Let the hearer say,
    "Come."
    Let the one who thirsts
    come forward,
    and the one who wants
    receive the gift
    of life giving water.
